Per Global BC:

It will be mostly sunny but cold across the province tomorrow (Monday). However, conditions will begin to change Tuesday on the South Coast as cloud moves in over the area. By Tuesday night and Wednesday this next Pacific System will bringing initially snow, then rain. The amount of snow that will fall over the South Coast will depend on how quickly conditions warm up. Stay tuned to Global BC for further updates on this storm.

For those hoping for snow... be careful what you wish for. Look at the Calgary area - it is not just the absence of the Flames that makes me happy to live in Vancouver.

Drivers trapped in cars for 20 hours as storm batters Calgary area

A stretch of stranded vehicles lined the Trans-Canada Highway near Strathmore, Alta., east of Calgary, Sunday as high winds and drifting snow caused treacherous conditions that wreaked havoc on highways and city roads.

Some motorists had been stranded more than 20 hours, spending the night huddled in their vehicles and using fuel sparingly to keep warm. In some locations, snow drifts piled higher than semi cabs.

The Trans-Canada Highway remained closed between Calgary and Bassano for most drivers for the "foreseeable future," Calgary police said.

RCMP opened the road westbound from Strathmore to Calgary temporarily Sunday afternoon to allow stranded drivers through, but stressed the highway wasn’t open for regular travel.

The Town of Strathmore had declared a local state of emergency Saturday evening.

The RCMP and local emergency services in Strathmore were searching nearby highways Sunday for any stranded motorists and taking them to local schools for temporary lodging.

About 150 people spent the previous night in a Stathmore school gymnasium.

"We’ve had literally hundreds of vehicles in lineups," said RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb.

Ralf Gnittke and his co-worker had been in their Ford Sprinter van 50 kilometres east of Stathmore since 4 p.m. Saturday.

Blowing snow was piling up outside the vehicle and reducing visibility. Vehicles were lined up along the highway as far as he could see, Gnittke said.

"It’s getting worse," he said.

Gnittke said he was "definitely OK," but was hoping help arrived soon. He and his co-worker, who had been on the road for about 30 hours driving from Manitoba before they were forced to pull over Saturday, had only half a bag of chips and a Coke since lunch Saturday.

They were running low on fuel and were starting their van every hour for a few minutes to keep the engine heated; they were bundled up in all their work clothes to stay warm.

"It’s cold. It’s freezing cold. It’s a howling wind and it’s feeling cold," said Gnittke.

In Calgary, drifting and blowing snow also made roads in the city impassable.

"If you don’t have to go out, just don’t. It’s a mess," said Calgary police acting detective Tracey Johnson.

The town of Strathmore is about 50 kilometres east of Calgary.
