The Official Transit Thread

It's 2 years old and they're already increasing the frequency of the trains to add capacity. This just proves that if you build a good transit system, people here will use it.

One of the the reason for the increased service is in advance of anticipated ridership post Labour Day but also the Canada Line is already several years ahead of ridership projections but still not near capacity.

Gearing up for a flood of students using cheap-fare passes this fall, TransLink is increasing service on the Canada Line as of Wednesday.

...

TransLink spokesman Ken Hardie said the increase is due in part to the addition of "at least four [post-secondary] schools with tens of thousands of students" who will take advantage of the U-Pass cheap student fare system this fall.

"The Canada Line is busy anyway and what we saw is we're well ahead of ridership projections," Hardie said.

"We had looked to hit 100,000 riders a day by 2013 or 2014, but, right now, on an average weekday we're handling 116,000 riders a day [on the Canada Line]."

He attributed the unexpectedly fast growth to people discovering the line during the Olympics, as well as to the line's integration into the wider transit system, including the Sea-Bus and commuter buses.

Hardie said the line still has an extra four trains that it could put on before it reaches capacity. He noted that during the Olympics, the line routinely handled more than 200,000 people a day.

"We have enough headroom to keep expanding capacity," he said.

There was a bus crash in Richmond Sunday night after the vehicle hit the median on Highway 99 sending 16 passengers to hospital with several injured treated at the scene - four with serious injuries to VGH.

Several people were taken to hospital following a bus crash on Highway 99 in Richmond last night.

A Coast Mountain bus carrying 30 passengers on the 351 Bridgeport route, crashed into the median on the highway near Cambie Road at around 9:30 p.m., confirmed a spokesman for TransLink.

TransLink’s Drew Snider said 16 people were taken to hospital, and several others were treated at the scene for various injuries.

“The bus wound up on the median,” Snider said, adding that the driver of the bus may have been trying to avoid a collision with another vehicle on the highway.

Twelve people were taken to Richmond Hospital with minor injuries and an additional four bus riders were taken to Vancouver General Hospital with serious injuries, said B.C. Ambulance Service spokeswoman, Kristy Anderson.

“None of the injuries were critical,” Anderson said.

Snider said he hadn’t yet spoken to the bus driver.

Police are continuing to investigate the accident, he said.

Deas Island RCMP, which is investigating the accident, has not yet been reached for details.

The bus driver involved in that crash last night has now been charged with one count of speeding and one count of failing to wear a seatbelt under the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Police have found that a Coast Mountain bus was travelling at "a high rate of speed" on Highway 99 in Richmond Sunday evening, and that that was a contributing factor in the bus crashing into a concrete barrier. The driver of the bus has been charged.

The bus, carrying 30 passengers on the 351 Bridgeport route, crashed into the barrier on the highway near Cambie Road at around 9:30 p.m.

Witnesses told police the bus was travelling in the bus lane at a high rate of speed when a minivan abruptly changed lanes in front of it, causing the bus to leave the road and collide with the barrier separating the bus-only lane from the merge lane, on the northbound side of the highway.

Sixteen injured passengers were transported to Richmond General Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital with minor injuries; several others were treated at the scene for various injuries.

“This is a classic example demonstrating what can happen when drivers fail to pay attention to their speed, their driving, and to what’s going on around them. The results can be catastrophic, especially when travelling at highway speeds,” said Cpl. Aaron Sproule of the RCMP’s Lower Mainland District Traffic Services department.

The bus was not driveable and had to be towed away.

The 48-year-old bus driver, Laurence Douglas Brand of Delta, has been charged with one count of speeding and one count of failing to wear a seatbelt under the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Police are continuing to look for a light-coloured mini-van seen leaving the scene, which police believe also contributed to the collision. Anybody who might have witnessed the crash or have knowledge that might identify the minivan is asked to contact the Deas Island RCMP Detachment at 604-46-2184.

The driver has to wear a seat belt, but the passengers don't?

I guess if you force passengers to wear seatbelts it would greatly reduce the efficiency of the system. It would take away the standing room on the bus.

But the #351 travels on a freeway and uses the Orion V buses. Maybe it's time to introduce seatbelts on routes like this.unsure.gif

they really need to do something about the exits from commercial station heading up to broadway. during rush hour the staircase/elevator are a bottleneck.

i want to know what the genius who designed that was thinking. 2 escalators going up and 2 going down would be so much better.
