What Do You Expect To Get From The Luongo Trade?

Instantly does alot of things.. just couldn't keep his starting postion; losing it to a 26 year old backup or get his team to the second round.

Yea, Chicago needs another goalie on the downside with a huge contract as they just stopped paying Huet to eat foie gras in Switzerland..

We need a top-2 defenceman to play with Edler when Salo gets too old or retires, and he has to be able to play big minutes next season and the year after when the rest of our core is gunning for a Cup.

If we do have to trade Luongo (big mistake), I say we go for pieces like

Eric Brewer (big, physical shutdown defenceman)

Hedman (obvious good fit for Edler being Swedish and huge)

Marc-Andre Bergeron (solid veteran presence on defence is what we need, basically a better version of Salo in all aspects)

Garrison (big and could break out again next season, FLA and VAN play a similar style as well)

Brian Campbell (likely, trade 2 bad contracts, Campbell is a cup winner, coming off a monster season from a team that plays similarly to Vancouver and is a calming, experienced veteran now)

Kulikov (looking to breakout next season as well)

Cody Franson (huge, right handed shot who's improving every single season and is on the brink of a breakout too)

Often defencemen moving from team to team have very different seasons (ie. Campbell better in FLA than CHI, Kaberle experienced very different seasons in TOR, BOS and now MTL, Phaneuf was great in CGY, average in TOR, Bouwmeester was great in FLA, terrible in CGY).

However, this is often due to the type of game or style of offence the teams play. For example, Boston rarely activate their defence and play a solid defensive style first which is why Kaberle struggled there but excelled in a more open style in Toronto. However, big physical, slower players like Phaneuf struggled with this fast paced Toronto team and played better in Calgary. On the flip-side, fast skaters like Bouwmeester don't work well in these sorts of environments, but produce more points playing in a fast, active defensive team like Florida.

Basically, the Florida system is very similar to the Canucks system in that both teams activate their defencemen often and get them jumping up in the rush and moving around a lot, which is why any defenceman thriving in the Florida system would play well in Vancouver. Namely, Brian Campbell and Garrison.

Canucks will lose the Luongo trade, and people need to be ready to accept that as fact. As others have previously mentioned, we're likely to have to accept a Keith Ballard or David Booth type contract in return, as well.

I used to think we wouldn't get much because of his contract but I have second thoughts now.

The biggest money years are already paid. That means Lu at a 5.3 cap hit--which is great value. Once he is over the hill, he can either retire or the team can trade him to a cap-floor team (small money+big hit=value for cap floor teams).

The reality for the teams that need a serious tender is that Lu is the jackpot this year. He's the best goalie anyone will aquire (Bernier is the only other serious asset that may be available that I know of).

That doesn't mean we'll get crazy return. But it isn't just a salary dump.

Here's what will happen if Loungo gets traded; whatever team he is traded to will send back the player on their team with the most inflated salary that is producing the least and possibly a 2nd tier prospect or a draft pick. The only way a team would take Luongo's giant long term contract would be if they got to get rid of their most bloated contract. It's going to happen, there's no way around it.
