canucks#01fan
To van: 1st round pick 2014 To SJ: 1st round pick 2014 Increases competition so the teams have an incentive to play hard regular season hockey and finish ahead of eachother in the standings. Increases rivalry.

40DollarOnion
I'll answer your question with another question - have you ever seen any trade with one pick for another straight up? It doesn't even have to be a first rounder, could be a second, third, etc., so long as they're both the same round. For that matter, have you ever seen any trade for different picks straight up (one for one, not a first for two seconds)?

elvis15
Yes this past draft NYJ Devils traded their 2015 7th round draft pick for the 7th Round draft pick this year from the LA Kings, not really of note, but it does happen, though the real value in this one is probably more good will from NYJ towards the LA kings for a good working relationship in further dealings. (this is in reference to the pick they used for the Little Broduer

CanucksFanMike
I would do it... I am reasonably confident that Vancouver will finish ahead of San Jose in the standings. But, deals like this never happen as people above have pointed out.

canucks#01fan
Not if our first is 1st overall and San Jose's is 30th, or vice versa.. I don't think a straight up swap of firsts will ever happen before the season starts. It would have just too much risk.
Drouin
thats the beauty of it, you obviouls trade with a team that is on par with your so both teams think they can beat out the other. It wont happen but is theoretically a feasible trade.

Danthecanucksfan
Cool approach. Yet neither team does this because you would want to be in control of your draft pick. Where as if you swapped, your picks fate is in another teams hand, giving you no control.
мeтpо
Imagine if the Canucks did this in 2015 and they ended up getting 1st overall and miss out on McDavid. I'd be choked.
elvis15
ya i understand that it probably wont happen but that doesnt mean it cant. It is somewhat logical too.
canucks#01fan
That's just it, it's not really logical. The idea behind a trade is to improve your team with the pieces you get back and/or move out. It's not designed to motivate the players by holding a carrot in front of them - or a whip behind - when they don't think about the management decisions. Gillis would do it if we get an obvious advantage from a team we think will be cleary lower in the standings, but then that team would have to have much higher aspirations or else they'd never do it. San Jose isn't one of those teams and there aren't a lot that will overvalue themselves enough for it to happen. Sure, anything's possible, but not nearly as many things are likely to actually happen.
