Guest Gumballthechewy
it's actually slang from boxing before it was ever used in baseball. southpaw (n.) "lefthander," 1885, originally baseball slang, of pitchers, often said to have been coined by Finley Peter Dunne ("Mr. Dooley"), Chicago sports journalist and humorist, in the days when baseball diamonds were regularly oriented with home plate to the west. But south paw "a person's left hand" is attested from 1848 in the slang of pugilism. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=southpaw Link to comment
avelanch
i guess you can refer to your left hand as your south paw, but you can't refer to a left-handed person as a southpaw. Link to comment

avelanch
Or rather you can't refer to your left hand as a 'southpaw', and you can't refer to a left-handed person as a 'south paw'. The one word version is acceptable for the whole person while the two word version is meant for the hand itself. Link to comment
Mustapha
Southpaw here. I would argue that you can use the term 'Southpaw' for the hand or person. Why? because it sounds cool, and Sly was a wicked southpaw boxer in the Rocky series. Link to comment
