it's actually slang from boxing before it was ever used in baseball.

Or rather you can't refer to your left hand as a 'southpaw', and you can't refer to a left-handed person as a 'south paw'. The one word version is acceptable for the whole person while the two word version is meant for the hand itself.

I would argue that you can use the term 'Southpaw' for the hand or person. Why? because it sounds cool, and Sly was a wicked southpaw boxer in the Rocky series.
