[Rumour] Jets to Sign Steve Mason

Conflicted on him, to be honest.

You're correct, though. One of the best examples of "don't rush goaltenders in." Forget who was talking about this a month or so ago, but the magic number for goalies to develop in the AHL before even getting a sniff of the NHL is 150 games (give or take).

They were using these examples, most notably, with Braden Holtby, Corey Crawford, and Cory Schneider. These guys, no matter their pedigree, need time in the AHL to develop and get used to the workload. That was the problem with the Jets last year with Hellebuyck. While Hellebuyck had terrific numbers in college and faired very well in the AHL, they didn't take their time with him in the AHL. That showed last year. The problem was they also didn't have any better options than him, as Pavs is awful and Hutch is a "capable" backup who is good for 20 games (half he'll lose).

Mason is a stop gap to allow Hellebuyck to develop or, more likely, give Comrie the time he needs to develop in the AHL before he's ready to take over starting duties in the Peg, which is the likelier, long term plan.

Mason/Hellebuyck could be a sneakily good combo if the Jets play decent next year.

Their defence has some big holes there but if Mason gets on a red-hot run, the Jets could surprise some teams. Up front they're going to be better than last year, score more goals, and if they get a decent goaltender they'll push for the playoffs.

Mason is one of the biggest wild cards in the game so we'll see which Steve Mason rocks up to Winnipeg.
