Lancaster
It's more important on how the team plays than anything. The 2011 Canucks were on average bigger than Boston... but when you're always turning the other cheek, it doesn't matter how big you are. The Canucks just need to always match the intensity and physicality of whatever comes at them. Having a big guy on the team is nice, but it does potentially lead to complacency. I remember there are nights when Gudbranson was still on the team and the Canucks were still being manhandled. Gudbranson will fight anyone, but it felt like no one else were willing to back him up. I'd personally rather have a behemoth on the blueline that's willing to throw hits.... like what Edler used to do. On a Edler related note.... seems like he's gotten smaller. I remember during his prime, he was like 225-230lbs... now he's like 212lbs. I wonder if he's just trying to be a bit bigger... or it's due to his back injury from years ago slowly catching up. The days of the big power forward playing in the top 6 ala Todd Bertuzzi and Milan Lucic are pretty much over. Other than a few players around the league like a Tom Wilson you won't see too many true power forwards in today's game, it's all about speed now. That's why a guy like Lucic is not in the top 6 anymore. Podkolzin, Miller and BO will be fine for us in our top 6 with Petey, Brock and Hogs mixed in for a balanced group. Our bigger concern is trying to get a competitive 3rd line in place for the future that can play against the other team's top line and take some pressure off of BO for defensive duties. We need a young 3C badly. Sutter will be gone next year and Gaudette isn't a 3rd line centre. Kole Lind may be that guy. If not we have to find one. Miller and Horvat and Anderson are the "new" power forward types. Your right on Wilson and Lucic too. Bieksa was basically calling Miller a power forward past week with his "thick" build etc. And really, compared to say Cam Neely and Wendel Clark he's right in the same size range, as is Anderson. For every Keith T, Lindros, Renberg, Bertuzzi - the leagues had ten "solid thick guys" like Miller, Horvat, Neal, Anderson etc. 6'3-6'4" 230-250lb guys that can play the game, and a heavy one have always been few and far between ... not many ever considered Linden a power forward ... he sure was though in today's standards. It just seems they are lacking in that area since Bertuzzi left. Aside from Bertuzzi himself ... who have we ever had that's 6'3-6'4, 240 lbs and could play like that? Sandlak? Antoski? Stanjanov? The answer is nobody. Cam Neely and JT Miller have the exact same build, of course Miller doesn't have the same hands and doesn't fight nearly as much and definitely not against the same level as competition... but it's not like Bertuzzi could fight at all either because he couldn't. Sure it would be nice to have a guy like prime Bertuzzi ... that said how many years of prime Bertuzzi did we even get? And seem to remember a lot of floating - a lot. Would rather have Miller right now then a career average form Bertuzzi.

This team is showing they can punish by committee. Even Petey has been chippier this year and standing his ground. Miller is "thick" and for sure lays the body. JV looks like a been pole next to him and he's about the same height ...
Canuckfanforlife82
For those of you who have missed it. It talks about how Podkolzin might not join the Canucks this year. https://www.google.ca/amp/s/theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-prospects-tracker-a-wrinkle-in-the-podkolzin-timeline-lind-leading-the-comets/wcm/11e328b8-e20d-4e38-a545-5bb7dff92152/amp/
86Viking
Podkolzin is the easy answer for in house, not sure if this player plays with an edge or fights but I like Miles Wood from NJ. Seems to be having a good start to the year under Ruff though so wouldn't be a cheap acquisition anymore compared to last year he could've been had for less. Another player is Crause from Arizona, but with the 2 week quarantine rule... Also, like Bennett from Calgary, don't want to give Jake up for him as I think he is worth less...but his playoff resume sure looks good and would be enticing to teams. We have some in house players like Mac or Bailey who have size, if Mac could bring that physical part to his game every night that would be a great bonus for us. Bailey seems like the AHL version of Virtanen, speed and size but next to no grit and a lack of hockey iq at the NHL level. Virtanen is the logical roster player for this answer, but he doesn't play a hard nosed physical game on the regular...doesn't have it in him or he thinks he is above that style of player? Either way if Jake could bite down hard and give it his all like Tyler Motte...we wouldn't be so disappointed with the kind of player he is. I was really hoping he would be our Wayne Simmonds from the LA and Philly years, skate hard, hit, fight when needed and score 25-35G a year
IBatch
And why is Podz listed at 6'4" on wikipedia? He's not. Like saying Kevin Bieksa is 6'3 on the "tale of the tape"...big tales for sure....even his agent denied this in December.
