The NHL and NHLPA are working on COVID-19 roster protection as the virus continues to affect team lineups, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Things being discussed include: optional use of a taxi-squad through the NHL all-star break, emergency call-ups for players making under $1 million and the freedom to add a goaltender if a club has less than two healthy due to the virus.

Friedman adds that there will be some rules for who's eligible to be on a taxi squad, including "clearing of waivers" and time spent on an NHL roster.

Several clubs have had no choice but to ice an undermanned roster this season because of players being out due to the virus and the need for the team to stay under the salary cap.

In 2020-21, the NHL is allowed each team to carry four to six players on a taxi squad to keep extra bodies available in the event of a last-minute positive COVID-19 test or separate injury. Players on the taxi squad were able to practice and travel with the team while collecting the same salary they would have in the AHL.

NHL teams are returning to practice on Sunday, with league action on pause until at least Tuesday after the league postponed all games on Monday because of COVID-19 concerns.

The league is expected to provide an update on the schedule before the end of the day Sunday.

I mean the teams that have had almost all of their players test positive have a pretty good advantage now.

They will be guaranteed to have a full roster for the next 90 days since testing won’t be required.

Every other team will be praying they don’t lose one of their stars before every game.
