  1. Agree that TOR most likely will resign Matthews. Don't see Zib involved in any trade as he has a full NMC.
  2. Toronto has a decent amount of cap space next season. They don't need to do anything crazy to ice a competitive team. Simply resigning Bunting $4m, Samsonov $3.5m, Kampf $1.8m, Acciari $1.7m, Schenn $1.5m and signing some cheap UFA guys (something like Janmark $1.25m, Khaira $800k, 8th LD $775k) gives them the following roster which is cap compliant and likely to be competitive: Bunting Matthews Marner Knies Tavares Nylander Janmark Acciari Jarnkrok Khaira Kampf Lafferty (Holmberg) Reilly Schenn McCabe Brodie Giordano Liljegren (LHD Timmins) Samsonov (Murray) If they want to resign O'Reilly then they will probably look at trying to move Murray, which they likely have to add a small sweetener to get rid of his contract. When you consider how much cap space they have, they are not going to trade big name players for poorer returns in order to create less than $400k of extra cap space.
  3. Pretty good chance that Toronto resigns Matthews. They are looking fine for next season in terms of cap space. They can use the projected $4m increase in 2024-25 (plus expiring contracts of Murray and Brodie) to give Matthews (say to $12.5m) and Nylander (say to $8m) a pay rise. Total cost of pay rises is only $1.9m. Tavares contract expires the following year giving them plenty of cap space from 2025-26 onwards.
  4. If we're dumping contracts this could work... To SJS: Garland + Boeser To VAN: Labanc + Kunin Garland and Boeser provide some top 6 scoring to complement Hertl and Couture. VAN takes on 2 lesser players who are off the books in 1 more season.
  5. I don't see Nashville or Columbus interested in either of those deals. The Anaheim deal is an interesting idea. ANA have been using Henrique as a winger anyway. They could be interested in getting younger.
  6. Not impossible, just very unlikely. To get 3rd overall it would first require OTT to win the lottery. They can only advance 10 spots to #2. ANA would retain the #1 pick. Then if VAN wins the second draw we would receive the 3rd overall pick. So it’s possible but very unlikely to happen.
  7. @Phil_314 mentioned a trade idea in passing on another thread, which I think could work to achieve that... To PIT: Boeser To VAN: Rutta This would give us a stop gap RD for next season, plus cap space to target a couple of centers (because we really need more than 1x C imo) Sign Rodrigues $3m x 3 and Bjugstad $2m x 3 Both right handers, a nice mix of size/speed, excellent PK abilities. Line up (which is cap compliant with Pearson on LTIR and Poolman in AHL) becomes: Kuzmenko Pettersson Beauvillier Mikheyev Miller Hoglander ($950k) Podkolzin Rodrigues Bjugstad Joshua Aman Garland (Di Giuseppe) Hughes Rutta OEL Hronek Hirose ($775k) Schenn ($1.25m) Burroughs ($775k) Myers Demko Talbot ($1.1m) (Note: Rutta and Schenn can both play with Hughes 5v5 at different times)
  8. I'm guessing only 3 new players - a 3C, a RD and a backup G
  9. Schneider has potential but is not a sure thing. Assuming we can move Boeser this off season, then I would be keen on targeting Ryan Graves as Hughes partner. He's a left shot but has successfully played a lot of RD. He is a strong defender, has good size and is only 27. Would expect you could get him for around $5m AAV on a long term deal.
  10. Is Schneider really who we want to target? He's playing some of the most sheltered minutes in the NHL against very weak opposition players (QoC rel Corsi For % = -0.35) and is not performing very well...after 81 games averaging only 15:43 mins/game currently has an xGF of 44.3 and xGA of 56.0. If he was playing for the Canucks (instead of in front of Shesterkin) this would have been a disaster of a season. Compared to someone like Schenn who in 55 games with VAN playing against better opposition (QoC rel Corsi For % = +0.02) averaging 17:11 mins per game had an xGF of 35.6 and xGA of 35.7. I think we all considered Schenn to be an OK partner for Hughes, but we would hope to do a lot better than Schenn. Schneider is only 21 but he has played 124 games in the NHL now, and I don't know if he is ever going to be a top pairing Dman.
  11. Yes it's not worth stressing about. No difference between 3.0 or 3.5% chance at first overall. But there is a difference between picking 10th or 11th.
  12. So the Canucks are either 10th or 11th last, depending on the results of our final game and the Blues final game (Blues move ahead of us in the standings due to the ROW tie breaker should we end up on the same points)
  13. No he's not waiver exempt. So he needs to be on the NHL roster, but I would be happy to keep him as 13th forward to begin the season, getting a few games here and there, then step into the top 9 full time from the TDL onwards.
  14. Keeping Beauvillier til the TDL would be ideal. Then we can trade him as a rental, get a pick in return and move Hoglander into his spot, which should be ideal timing for Hogs to step into a top 9 role full time.
  15. Thanks for your feedback. One of the difficult things about projecting forward in time is estimating whether players will even make the NHL roster or when they will be ready to be impact players in the NHL. My original proposal is erring on the side of taking more time with guys like Hogs, Podz, Johansson, Jurmo, Pettersson (D), Klimovich and Silovs. Obviously in the real world if a young player breaks out, then you make space for them on your roster. As my proposal is about competing now, then young guys are not getting those top roster spots unless they are better than the NHL player that I have put into that role. Also good to remember as an armchair GM, it is the role of the coach (not me) to determine who plays on what line and how they are deployed. I am trying to put forward a roster that can compete. I purposely put Podz back into the AHL next year. He is not eligible for waivers and still only 21. He has only scored 4 goals in 39 NHL games this season. IMO he would benefit from more time in the AHL logging big minutes, playing all situations and unlocking his offensive potential (which I see as high, which is why I think he can legitimately be a 2RW in the season after (again all a guess). Looking at Hogs and his development you can see that playing in the AHL this season at age 22 has been fantastic for him. He will be ready for the NHL roster full time next season, which is good timing because he is eligible for waivers. I have put him in a position at 13th forward to give him the chance to slot into the roster for around 40 games and show the coach where he is the best fit. Is it as a feisty goal scorer in the top 6 or is it as a speedy gritty bottom 6 guy with some offensive flair? My hope is that Hogs and Podz will be ready to fill those 2RW and 3RW spots on a contending team within 1-2 seasons. Not sure who will be the best fit on each line...
  16. Thanks for your comment and respect your opinion. But I totally disagree about that lineup being a fringe playoff team. Defense and Goaltending (our key areas of concern) are significantly improved. The PK should be in the top 12 of the league with Compher, Hathway, Acciari, Watson, Gavrikov, Mayfield added. Definitely making the playoffs. Replacing Boeser and Garland with Killorn and Compher will only improve our scoring, particularly at even strength. Our GF is already 12th in the league. What is more interesting to me is that I think that lineup could actually do some serious damage in the playoffs. But just my opinion. Cheers.
  17. Very interesting. That potentially changes things, but it wouldn't be super unusual to have a trade prepared in advance.
  18. I realise this is not realistic, just been thinking about how we could clear cap to add some size, grit and get tougher to play against. So I am putting a bunch of ideas together to see how this pans out over the next 4 seasons... 2023 Off Season Buyout: OEL Trades: To ARI: Myers after signing bonus paid + two 2023 4th round picks To VAN: Future considerations (Myers agrees because ARI either trades him elsewhere or buys him out) To SJS: Garland To VAN: Labanc (similar contract size but Labanc expires next season, VAN waives Labanc, someone might pick him up or just leave him in Abby cause he's not tough) To PIT: Boeser To VAN: 2024 3rd round pick (some say Boeser is negative value, I think a 3rd rounder is minimal return, but I take it cause Boeser doesn't fit the team focus) Signings: Gavrikov = $4.75m x 6 Mayfield = $3.4m x 5 Schenn = $1.5m x 3 Compher = $4.75m x 6 Killorn = $5m x 3 Hathaway = $1.75m x 2 Acciari = $1.6m x 3 Watson = $1.6m x 2 Hoglander = $950k x 2 Burroughs = $775k x 3 Raanta = $2.2m x 1 2023-24 lineup (Labanc in AHL, Pearson + Poolman on LTIR) total cap hit = $82.4m Killorn Pettersson Kuzmenko Mikheyev Miller Beauvillier Joshua Compher Hathaway Watson Aman Acciari (Hoglander) Hughes Mayfield Gavrikov Hronek Brisebois Schenn (Wolanin Burroughs) Demko (Raanta) 2024 Off Season Signings: Pettersson = $11.5m x 8 Hronek = $7m x 8 Podkolzin = $2.3m x 3 Joshua = $1.25m x 3 Aman = $1.25m x 3 Silovs = $1.5m x 3 2024-25 lineup (Poolman on LTIR) total cap hit = $86.0m Killorn Pettersson Kuzmenko Mikheyev Miller Podkolzin Joshua Compher Hathaway Watson Aman Acciari (Hoglander) Hughes Mayfield Gavrikov Hronek Brisebois Schenn (Wolanin Burroughs) Demko (Silovs) 2025 Off Season Signings: Kuzmenko = $8m x 6 Hoglander = $2m x 3 Raty = $950k x 2 Brisebois = $950k x 2 Jurmo = $950k x 2 Johansson = $950k x 2 2025-26 lineup, total cap hit = $90.8m Killorn Pettersson Kuzmenko Mikheyev Miller Podkolzin Joshua Compher Hoglander Di Giuseppe Aman Acciari (Raty) Hughes Mayfield Gavrikov Hronek Brisebois Schenn (Jurmo Johansson) Demko (Silovs) 2026 Off Season Signings: Demko = $6.5m x 3 Tuch = $9.5m x 8 Klimovich = $1m x 2 Karlsson = $1m x 2 Pettersson (D) = $1m x 2 2026-27 lineup, total cap hit = $92.7m Kuzmenko Pettersson Tuch Miller Compher Podkolzin Joshua Aman Hoglander Di Giuseppe Raty Karlsson (Klimovich) Hughes Mayfield Gavrikov Hronek Jurmo Johansson (Pettersson Burroughs) Demko (Silovs) If you got that far...thanks for reading! Hope this gets you thinking about the possibilities for this team
  19. I actually think Aman has as much promise as Raty to become our 3C in the long term. But for the next 2-3 seasons I think we need a vet to step into that role.
  20. I wonder if Myers might agree to a trade to Arizona after his bonus is paid on the basis that Arizona immediately buys him out. This allows VAN to clear all of his cap (no retention) for perhaps the cost of a 4th round pick to ARI. In addition to the pick, this allows Arizona to add $5.3m of cap this season for only the cost of $333k + $333k over 2 years. This also allows Myers to get paid $5.67m of his owed $6m for next season, plus the ability to get himself resigned and play somewhere else with a contract more suited to his worth.
  21. It's really no different than Canucks celebrating Dawali or First Nations or Black History. The 2SLGBTQIA+ community exists, just like the Hindu or First Nation communities. These celebration nights are just about showing inclusivity for these communities, i.e. "WE ARE ALL CANUCKS" Every person has their own beliefs (this is inherent in the rainbow community). Celebrating pride night does not require you to agree with all aspects of everyone's beliefs. In fact it's more about "you are welcome, regardless of whether I agree with your beliefs". No one is expecting the Canucks to agree with all aspects of Hinduism or Sikhism just because they wear a jersey to celebrate Dawali.
