It's certainly an act driven by emotion and not by reason or logic.

Of course it is, but it's not remotely idiotic nor misguided, not anymore than helping a stranger is.

Are you really just bitter that nobody helped or something? This discussion is more idiotic and misguided than the fact people donated money to her.

How the hell do you ever draw a comparison between this and doing a small minor deed to help a stranger? Do you think it's worth donating money for, moreso than every other person in the world with a tear in their eye?

One thing I've learned--the hard way at times--is not to spend money to mend other people's feelings.

If you see two groups of kids arguing and throwing verbal abuse at each other, do you not mind your own business and let them settle their own differences?

It all depends. A pair of teenagers arguing is one thing, someone being verbally attacked for no reason is different. This video isn't about people arguing, it's about kids who ridiculed another person. Although you may joke about the 'feeling police', you should always care about how others feel. It doesn't even matter if I dislike the person, I will stand up for someone if I see that they're being humiliated. I may be agnostic but do unto all men as you would have them to do to you. Whatever is hurtful to you, do not do to any other person.
Plain and simple.

She deserves monetary compensation for her hurt feelings more than anyone else because...?

Yeah, what was done to her wasn't right, but I'm sure we've been through worse. Children get bullied and tormented all the time. We just make them accept it as part of growing up. Why do people feel so much more heartstruck and compassionate for full grown adults in this situation?

And both you and I are among those who'd be told to "Man up, you wuss!", as I have alluded to earlier.

Nobody is saying she deserved monetary compensation for her hurt feelings more than anyone else....I have not seen one person here say that. If a group of people, out of the goodness of their hearts, chose to donate money to someone who has been despicably abused by a mob of unruly miscreants, what's it to you? Nobody asked you to donate, nobody's forced you to even care. What skin is it off your nose if others choose to display their empathy and concern for someone else? Really, BN, what should it matter to you, anyway, if you so obviously disagree with it? Accept that a lot of people had a lot of heart and chose to try and lessen the fallout of the abuse this woman suffered at the hands of hooligans.

“Children get bullied and tormented all the time. We just make them accept it as part of growing up”

I don't know what frickin' planet you live on, but on the one I live on, we don't 'make children accept being tormented and bullied as part of growing up'. Do you not read the news, watch television? There is a massive campaign underway to raise awareness of childhood bullying, the devastating effects of it short term and longterm and to attempt to curb it. I don't know what adult in your life made you accept this sort of treatment as a child, but making you accept the abuse of bullying is almost as abusive as the bullying itself. Accept it???? Surely you jest. I don't know one parent, in the circle of my friends, who would ever, has ever, told their child “This is all part of growing up, just accept it and move along”

I was going to let it go after my first response to you, keep it respectful, consider what I know personally about you already and where some of these comments may have come from. But your statement “Children get bullied and tormented all the time. We just make them accept it as part of growing up.” has made me reconsider. I cannot believe you would say such a thing.......giving the impression to those that read your words that somehow you believe bullying and tormenting children is an acceptable part of growing up. It is abuse, it is not acceptable under any circumstances and should not be tolerated by anyone.

Then why the frack didn't anyone tell my parents that?

This whole "anti-bullying" movement seems like a new age PC thing that didn't exist back in our bad old days. School of hard knocks, as my recollection has it. No holding hands and singing kumbaya.

And you never got a cent for it.

Keep that in mind.

He was a kid who was probably being supported by his family. This is a grown woman who chooses to ride the bus to and from school with these children so they are safe, and she has to go through this crap. This job pays next to nothing. Probably hardly enough for her to support herself, which is why society decided to reward this lady for her work and resilience through this disgusting bullying by donating some of their spare money towards her. Are you one of these people who scolds people for spilling a drink, or throwing the pizza crusts away, cause poverty-stricken kids in Africa could be eating or drinking it? Just cause this money wasn't donated to Africa, doesn't mean it's a lost cause.

That was like a free therapy session.

I don't know if this fact has been mentioned already but she makes a bit over 15k per year.

She also has 8 grandchildren. That could add to the expenses.

:picard:

So, should there have been a cap on what people could donate? Would that have satisfied you? Should someone have gone to the local travel agency, checked out the cost of a trip to Hawaii or some equally acceptable holiday destination and told people only to donate up to that amount of money? Oh man............

I'm sure when the idea of raising funds for a holiday was initially put in place, nobody had any idea the amount of donations would be so high. When the video went viral, more people became aware of what had happened and were outraged.

Edit: Actually, there was a goal of $5000 set initially, but when the video went viral, the donations skyrocketed.

"This" is not one person donating 300 big ones, "this" is many people dropping coins into a poor person's can, except via the internet. You're seriously a bitter old man who needs a hug and someone to tell you that the entire world isn't out to get you.

This is just ridiculous. Spend your money however the fark you want, and if I feel like shoving my cash down someone's throat, I'll do it without some prick criticizing me every step of the way.

The children are responsible for raising the grandchildren.

I'm aware of that but it is not uncommon for children to seek financial help from their parents. Also, the 8 grandchildren could possibly suggest that she herself had more than 2 (possibly 3) children. That is just a guess though, all 8 grandchildren could be from one child lol.

Also wanna add that one of Karen's sons committed suicide "some years ago". The kids on the bus also alluded to the fact and made a joke out of it. How cruel

Indeed they should be, and whether Karen Klein is responsible for raising any of her grandchildren or not, the fact still remains that many grandparents today are raising their grandchildren.

The 350k figure is a clear indicator that people saw a viral video, feel outraged and an a strong urge to "do something", and having a "donation button" in the link there gives them the catharsis they need...exactly like Kony 2012.

I suppose there is nothing wrong with that. People can spend their money however they wish. Perhaps worthier charities could learn from this.

Exactly. How can one criticize another for donating money out of the goodness of their heart ? They wanted to help Karen and this is the only thing they could think of. They knew she wasn't making a lot of money so they put two and two together and decided they wanted her to go on a nice, relaxing vacation. Some people donated because they wanted her to not have to return to the same job ever again.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I don't understand people these days.

I actually saw this happen to a disabled guy during the beginning of the year, but some other student shut that midget up with a punch to his mouth.

Here's my thought on the incident..

First of all, it's anybodies choice to donate whatever to whoever..

Second of all, I don't understand why people are getting worked up over the situation. Bullying happens all the time, why should the victim get compensation? People always say that money doesn't make you happy. So how is the money here going to be able to mend her heart? Don't give me that BS that she can finally retire and blah blah.. She was a bus driver for a reason, she is a bus monitor for a reason, she loves her job and students. Yes we're human and have feelings. But is it really going to ruin your world when someone starts insulting you? Get over it. Society, in my opinion, is just too soft nowadays. People see things like this and feel bad for this woman. That's natural. But to make it a big deal and have it be on the news, is pointless. There are worse things that happen in this world.

Third of all, I don't care if you're going to flame me. I will just think you're too soft.

But all in all, whatever. I've seen worse.
