“@anguscertified: #canucks fans - meet the new and improved Zack Kassian. Down almost 20 pounds from last season: http://t.co/AHnrRKm0 #training”

Just saw this on twitter and was Retweeted by Pass it to bulis. This is great if your a Canuck fan or even just a Kassian fan. Hopefully he'll be able to be quicker in his skating like he was for Canada in the world juniors

That's pretty impressive, lunge jumps are so painful. Looks like he's going to be pretty explosive, and better prepared to play 20mins a game.

Do we want a powerforward losing weight?

I thought his skating was great for a big guy...

He's trimming off fat and during the season will build more muscle. Pretty common routine for any one that works out actually.

That's what I thought.

So we finally acquire the powerforward we need, and then we tell him to lose weight cause he's too big?

Didn't we try that with Bernier and he got alot worse?

Not every player has to fit into the skilled fast mold of our other players. Seems to me Penner does alright for himself at 240. So did Bertuzzi.

My buddy who is best friends with Prab Rai told me about this Saturday night. It was actually an ex coworkers boyfriend who I now keep in contact with, but he's a childhood friend of Prab Rai and his brother, he said Kassian's been skating in Langley with Prab Rai, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrooke, Jason Garrison and a couple other prospects, and yes, has lost 20 pounds. I have high hopes for Kass, and I think this will bring a new element to his game, speed.

muscle weighs more than fat ladies and germs. so if he lost 20 pounds of fat and kept all his muscle- kudos. and lets hope he adds some more lean bulk while hes at it.

In Kassian's case, he's gotta get way more mobile and trim that fat off.

He'll tag on some muscle soon, bump him up 5-10 pounds: 6'3", 215 pounds, speed will be much better now...seems like its gonna help him.

Nothing quite as intimidating as, "I've lost 20 pounds! Grrrrr!"

First the shave, now this. Soon he'll have his gap permanently filled too. (If that's not already done.)

We're taking this supposed 'untamed beast' of a player and turning him into another generic clone. I remain unimpressed.

Well 20 pounds is 20 pounds. That 20 pounds makes him harder to knock off the puck or clear from out of the crease.

I get the whole fitness thing, but I thought he was a good skater for his size already. Bertuzzi was 245 and built like a freight train.

Fat is not always a bad thing if you can move. Hopefully he can gain another 10 in muscle.

Ladies calm down, you trim off the fat then build weight by muscle building.

He will be much more explosive with the loss of 20 Lbs he is 21 by the time he is 25-26 he will probably mature into a healthy 240-250lbs or more.
also like you said bert was built like a freight train he was big and strong not big and fat.. like Lucic (sp) thick and solid not thick and soft.
Kassian is a strong young player and will only get stronger.

Bertuzzi and Iginla were both big power forwards but that was the pre-lockout era. Afterwards Iginla and Bertuzzi had to cut their weight to speed up and stay up to pace in the new NHL. The extra speed will benefit Kassian in his hitting and offensive game because he can get to where he needs to be to make a play. Also, that extra weight takes a lot of extra energy to carry around. When you're lighter you can have a full 30 second shift and go full out the entire time.

I guarantee you Bertuzzi wasn't all muscle at 245. You need fat to reach that weight unless you're Chara size.

It's like a linebacker. Those guys have huge bellies, but they can move like the wind.

We'll see how it works out though.

Agree with above, drop the slop then start to build muscle mass. He's going to surprise a lot of people with size, speed, stregth, hockey ability and hockey sense.
He will be a force.

Some of you honestly know nothing about how workout programs usually work. For most, you do periods of cutting (dropping fat) while maintaining most, if not all, of the muscle you had before. Then you start putting on muscle. It's usually done in cycles.

If he drops twenty pounds of chub, and can skate faster, but has the same amount of strength, his hits will be bigger than before with the added velocity. He'll put on muscle throughout the season also.
