Fanuck Posted January 15, 2013 Share Posted January 15, 2013 If you're Holmgren in PHI, you've got to sense that your team is close, real close to winning it all. It is clear to everyone that their weakness is and has been goaltending for several years now. It makes a lot of sense to buy out Breezy and get a legit guy in the crease this season. Luongo is the single best option out there for any team close, contract notwithstanding. I have been thinking that Holmgrens vehement denial of the Luongo-Phi rumors means that there may in fact be something behind the talk. Luongo + 2nd round pick (and/or a current roster player) for B.Schenn is sensible for many reasons. Makes the Flyers a LEGIT contender this year and in the next few years. Takes care of Van's issues in the crease and at center. Everyone agrees that B.Schenn is a total stud and will develop into a star. If you're as close as Phi is to winning it all, you need to give that up to get the last piece (Luongo). Player for player at their stage in their careers no, you wouldn't do the trade straingt up - but considering each team's situation in the league right now (Phi being so close to legit contender and Van having an extra goalie and a need at center) it makes a LOT of sense.
