I would add Barlow to this list as well because his game contains all the elements that winning teams need.

And honestly, the fact that Stevie Y has been poking around at Danielson and Willander should say a lot. Both guys would be suitable picks at 11. I do not buy for a second that we need to trade down just to acquire one of these guys - unless we were dead certain that either player would be available. I have seen mock drafts over the last month or so where Danielson, Barlow and Willander have been pegged for the Blues at 10. I think this trade down stuff has been narrative for the most part. I am not saying it will never happen, but we are more likely to just sit at 11 and make our pick. Remember when we were going to trade back to pick Pettersson? Me too.

His skating just concerns me so so much. And I prefer the others. But if we do draft Barlow I will be pulling for him huge. Yea its not looking like a trade back scenario will be happening. I think the only trade possible would be if they could package 11 + + for a pick to acquire Leo Carlsson but thats very very unlikely.

i hope podz proves me wrong

    i really really do

if he becomes a 2nd line winger that brings physicality, forechecking, and can play on our PK while putting in 20-25 goals, id say thats very valuable to us

but for now.. idk. i was pretty disappointed in his last season.

I dont think anyone was more disappointed then himself.

But realistically they style of game he plays and what not and the strange dev path he has had its not that huge of a surprise hes going to take longer to arrive.

    Look at Ivan Barbashev.

Yes he wasn't drafted as high, and yes we should expect more from Podz given his draft position.

But it took him 5-6 years till he made an impact. And that was with a cleaner development path.

Then even after that it took him a little longer to have a statistical breakthrough in the regular season, drafted 2014 and it wasn't until 21-22 season he hit 60 points.

And this year he was a playoff animal.

So 8-9 Years post draft could be Podkolzins coming out. It was for Bertuzzi too. Im going to stay optimistic. These kind of players are hard to come by and can take longer to develop / mature.

Idk why so many people are so worried about cap space

We have a bit of a crunch this year but our roster is basically all filled out. As of next year, and continuing onwards, cap drops off our books very quickly. Beauviller, Myers, Pearson all drop off after this year - 14 million dollars. 3 to Petey and 3 to Hronek still leaves 8 million for a defenseman to replace Myers and a 3C.

We don't have much inefficient money past 2024-2025. In fact, the inefficient money we do have is offset by nice discounts on Hughes & Demko

Horvat was a good pick, no disagreement from me there.

But boy would it have been nice to have got Caufield (ultimate boom/bust) instead of the safe Podkolzin.

I made this comment earlier as well, but the top teams in the NHL are not made up of a majority of drafted talent. A byproduct of the cap era is that teams are forced to let serviceable players go, often for free (see us giving up Tanev, Toffoli, Markstrom, and more) in order to make the cap work. So the best strategy for the draft is to acquire players that you think are likely to be very hard to get down the road through trade and UFA. What kinds of players are those? 30-40 goal scorers, 1st line players, top pair defensemen, etc. Petey was a major boom/bust pick. I seem to recall a lot of people wanting Glass instead (right hand center, big, etc etc.) Thank god we went for Petey instead.

Well not to argue against what caufield has done to this point, he’s been more impressive that’s a fact. But  in 2-5 years if podz is an effective power winger playing for us for less than $4M and bringing a play style we sorely lack and helping win battles and win important games down the stretch and in the spring and caufield is battling injuries in and out of the lineup you could feel a little better about it.

Any club that drafts Benson will try to move him, as he develops, to centre. Too much value in having him play centre. He’s definitely going to fall out of the top ten though. Might even out of the top 15. Saying he sees himself as a winger isn’t going to help his draft position, that’s for certain,

It’s cause he sucks on faceoffs inthink

  5. 1 minute ago, eeeeergh said:

Idk if i buy that argument though

So what if Bensons team was better? Sure maybe he had some better linemates, but its very clear that he was the play driver. Im not blaming Danielson for his team losing games, or having a sucky +/-.

Id be interested in comparing how many minutes each of them got - i suspect as top liners for each team, their minutes played was somewhat comparable.

But if Danielson is that good he should be producing a lot more. His numbers are not reflective of a 1st round pick. Given his size especially.

The teams they played on are drastically different. A none playoff team compared too one of the best teams In The dub.

benson playing with two highly touted first round picks from last year and Danielson playing with bums.

Danielson got the toughest matchups on both ends.

Watch danielsons games seriously. Watch how he creates offence. Look how much opportunity he gives to his line mates.

there’s literally plays where pasternak literally wiffs on cross seam passes with an open net.

Danielson elevated a cast of basically bums and was the primary driver in all aspects.

you swap Danielson and Benson and I don’t think Benson produces the gaudy numbers.

Danielson still produced offence at a pace that was admirable and if you look at his rookie seasons production as an underageer playing with a little bit better of talent he produced at a decent clip too.

I think Danielson is getting slept on because he doesn’t have gaudy stats and he’s not the sexy/flashy pick.

he’s a really good option for us if he’s there at 11.

    willander

    danielson

    wood

    benson

all picks I can get behind

Well it’s unlikely anyone we draft is stepping into the 3c position and given benson’s size he projects more as a winger in the nhl. And he certainly isn’t coming into the nhl at 160 lbs next year

Ya he even said in His interview he’s more comfortable on the wing and sees that where he will be playing going forward too

but he is a style winger that although he lines up on the wing he ends up covering C ice responsibilities so I’m curious how this will develop for him

Good comments. I don't pretend to have any inside knowledge. But the "book" on Moore is very impressive.

    1. Regarded as the probably the best skater in the draft -- top speed, acceleration, and mobility all top the charts. Its weird but some scouts have his "weakness" as being "too fast" because he gets ahead of his line-mates.

    2. Hard worker, excellent motor, very good shot, very good playmaker

    3. Put up very good numbers this season despite being pushed down to the second line (as Smith was 1C on the USDP team).

    4. Most draft boards have him ahead of Danielson..

The trade-off is that Danielson is bigger, stronger, and better defensively but not quite as good in the offensive zone. And, while Danielson is a very good skater it is always nice to have the fastest guy on the ice if you can.

But I do like Danielson and would have no problem with taking him even if Moore is still on the board.  In fact, on reflection, I lean in that direction.

Ya its his number one issue. Almost like Raymond he takes himself out of plays, or he doesn't harness his speed wisely.

Which could be line mates / system related or it could be his IQ.

In an interview he himself acknowledged hes working on his IQ and learning how to use his speed smarter.

Like he skates himself into danger or into a dead end play with no support at times. Or literally into the boards/corner.

I also find hes not the best puck carrier similar to Mason Raymond again in that regard.

Whereas say Nate Danielson knows how to use his speed effectively and usually pulls defenders into him to make space for his line mates.

And Nate didn't work with the most talented line mates or team so I think it is an IQ difference between them that almost negates the marginal speed difference. I think Nate is a very effective and fast skater.

    -

His shot is kind of a strength and a weakness I think. In close it looks good, like quick and accurate but from distance I dont see it. Maybe with power / strength training that will come quick though.

Second line he also go softer matchups to exploit. And I happened to watch him play some really uninspiring games that really left a bad impression I haven't been able to fully shake for him.

I do like his progression path in front of him if hes given lots of patience. I think he needs years before coming to the NHL. Like he needs a year or two at the NCAA after Cooley leaves to be the GUY for the first time in his career.

And then you are looking at a guy who has been kind of sheltered for many development years that top end guys, or playing high up on lineups getting the hard matchups.

I know its not a popular opinion but it is mine that Danielson > Moore.

Thanks for that I appreciate the response. I am hoping it isn't just a bias now I have between the two and that I am seeing things clearly.

But end of the day I like Moore too. I am just more worried about his Hockey IQ than anything else.

Everyone is guessing by the looks of how different everyone's list is. Maybe it's a good idea to draft by positional needs.

Take the best C or D available at #11

I think it will already be factored into their final list.

The only way I see us taking a winger is if they think that winger is going to be a big time goal scorer / game breaker

similar to the logic behind tsking JL and how he had a shot that really separates him from the group.

When ranking shooters in this draft with who has the best shots for forwards bw interesting to see peoples lists

    1. bedard is easy

    2. Barlow I think is next

but then it gets interesting dvorksy and Danielson to me are similar in they actually have great heavy shots but their volume isn’t to the level of a shooter and I think it came down to team mates / situations for them. So it’s hard to rank beyond Barlow in the draft for me where it’s very clear who’s shots are better.

but Barlow being just behind bedard is why I think the Canucks are interested. Same reason they were interested in JL, guys got a shot

I feel like the Wings need to take a swing on somebody that has high upside though. They don't have an equivalent to a Petey or a Hughes in their system. Something has to give in Detroit.

I mean if Willndee is a a hit they’d have a prett elite top 3 in seider edvinsson Willander

and a big mobile blueline looks key to playoff success

    I could see them drafting

    dvorksy / Simashev / Willander

I hope not. I really like Willander as our pick, I agree we desperately need a player like this.

I honestly have idea what to expect, I think Smith to SJ makes sense at 4, & I'd guess Reinbacher to Montreal at 5. Michkov could come in at one of those picks too but those guys would be my guesses, and after that I have absolutely no clue.

I think you could make a case for like 15 guys to be potential top 10 picks & I would expect the team's lists to be all over the place.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Danielson is in alot of top 10's (and goes top 10), Dvorsky is definitely top 10 I'd think, Barlow & Leonard are hard nosed scoring wingers that I think teams really really covet - both could go top 10. Benson's obviously polarizing but he's going to be in some teams top 10's. Then the defensemen in ASP, Willander & Simashev. And other forwards like Sale, Moore, Wood will be high on some teams lists too.

Fingers crossed we get a great player that we need.

the other exciting part for Willander is:

not just the green line rivalry vs Boston college and the super star national program line and the battles they will have.

    BUT

    1. he may partner with Lane Hutson which could give a taste of what a Hughes-Willander duo would be like since Lane Hutson had a monster season and could be very Quinn Hughes like in college next year. He’s looking very good.

    2. macklin Celebrini is there and the whole hockey world will be following the team. They could have a massive year and it’s a pretty talented lineup to be a part of

think it’s the draft week or just before. He usually gets it as close to the draft as possible and it’s 14 inside scouts or so I believe so a pretty decent insight into the leagues rankings

Watching some of the U18 games again. I'm getting the hype with Willander.

He has a physical edge to him, really strong along the walls & likes to play the body, a real pain in the ass to play against. He's good at containing an attacker along the wall, establishing body position, & taking the puck away - then getting away with his feet or finding the open pass quickly. Against the Americans he was taking the body any chance he could & knocking their top guys over.

He's a heads up player with & without the puck. Defensively he's aware of his check off the puck & when he gets the puck he's not afraid to take that extra split second under pressure to make the right play, plus he's got the excellent skating ability to carry it when he needs too but alot of times he'll just make the right pass.

Maybe a Tanev-type defensive player with a physical game, his defensive details are great already. Offensively he handles the puck really well & like I said can pass well. Its not his bread & butter atm but I understand the thought he has room for improvement. He very clearly has puck skills & smarts.

He scored a nice goal PP goal against Canada from the point where he made it seem like he was going to pass, but he had his head up & instead ripped a wrister through traffic that caught the goalie off guard.

As much as this makes me happy I feel like we aren’t going to even have the choice of taking Willander. I just have this feeling Detroit is gonna draft him before us. And winning those extra games will burn a little since we need a guy like Willander in the system so bad.

It wouldn’t be the end of the world though imagine a draft where all three RHD go before our pick lol

We took Yzerboy to the woodshed. He had to explain during his season ending presser that it was on him got the club going into the dumper after he traded Hronek. SLO Mo just isn’t good enough to take on the #1 D that Hronek was playing. And when asked to go do he failed miserably and the Wings suffered as a result. We literally stole their best player and he’s only 25. Yzermsn will be fired very soon. As he was from Tampa. For being stupid.
    #hateallbutus.

Haha I love the energy but Hronek wasn't their best player but he was one of them thats for sure.

I think the Honk move will work out well I like him and he will get a good balance of minutes and matchups with Hughes on different pairings.

And im really excited to have a big point shot on the back end again. Myers slapping it just makes me sad.

haha ya but was a fair point with his shoulder we dont know how healthy he will be.

And it would be quite fitting if our new bomb of a shot from the point was injury prone, would give us that familiar Salo comforts

Fair. But when you are an undersized guy, you are going to take more abuse than bigger frame guys.

Or your shoulders wont be getting pinched and pushed down as often.

Caufield in puck battles or off the boards will regularly have larger guys weights baring down on to his shoulder.

Im 5 11 and last night even in a ball hockey games I played I had a 6 4 guy 220+ putting his weight on my shoulder throughout the game. even using my shoulder as leverage to push off. Lots of that kind of contact is even more extreme, powerful and heavy in the NHL and. lot of it goes undetected.

I just dont see Caufield having a long successful career or even living up to that contract he just signed as a sure thing at all.

Not saying hes not skilled, not capable or an elite goal scorer. I just dont know if hell have sustained success in the league and be able to stay healthy

Hronek I hope so! I am def nervous. But much less nervous about Hronek than I would be with Caufield at the start of his lengthy big ticket.
