I don't feel like Rathbone spends much time thinking about defense OR spending time in the weight room.

Glory shots are in offensive stats. And pp stats.

I think he could get stronger. I think he could defend better.

But might have to learn that with another team.

I don't want to rip on Bone too much, his defensive game needs work. To be honest he needs to work these kinks out by getting into games and figuring it out. He absolutely blew up the AHL but you could see his defensive issues down on the farm. My one thing I keep coming back to with him is that he has shown to be a quick study when he gets game time in. If you leave him sitting for too long it's a waste. At some point they need to throw him on the ice, let him make mistakes and learn. I still think he's worth the risk in doing that. He needs to learn the "timing" of things in the NHL. Once he gets that down I think his defensive play will improve. Yes he's had some bad games this year, but I still see progress happening with him. We just need to find a decent partner to pair him with so he can have room to make mistakes. Schenn would be great with him. Just like he has been with Hughes.

Agree we don't want to lose him for nothing and I'm sure the TDL is the red line for JR and PA.

But, I haven't read anything that suggests Bo wants out. It's possible that his agent and Canucks brass may not be talking because they have already more or less agreed on terms but some salary dumping is required before the Canucks can finalize the deal.  Or perhaps they agreed that they need to wait to see if the Canucks are doing a rebuild (in which it would be mutually beneficial to trade Bo). There are all sorts of situations that could be in play without there being love lost.  With that said, JR's public comments about Bo's stock rising was pretty poor.

Actually, that's all very true. I chose poor words to describe the situation. Bo definitely hasn't stated he wants out, it's the news pundits and his agent creating speculation that seem to be creating "stories". I just went back and checked out some info and def nothing coming from Bo himself. My apologies

So, you choose to ignore the fact that there was a serious research into the matter? Just because you are used to specific form of development?

This is an interesting point to make, and I think there is a connection to what you're saying. Maybe we can apply the same with Rathbone on our main team this year. Get some games in but spend just as much or maybe a bit more time on the "studying" part of things, then let the player go once you think they have a handle on what you are trying to teach them.

I worry they are running out of time with Rahbone using this method, but at least they have ample time with Klim. I think he even stated that the jump from Belarus to AHL was an absolutely huge one? I feel like he made that comment a while back. Lots to learn for a young adult coming from a low league like that to a top tier league playing against men.

Lots of young guys have that problem when the come to the AHL, not just Klim. It's a big adjustment going from junior to pro. Whether it's the AHL, SHL, or NHL, or even the NCAA. All are mens leagues and these teenage kids can get very over whelmed if not handled properly.

I feel like as long as the Canucks and Klim are on the same page then he will develop into a good future player for us.

Has it been publicized that Bo wants out?  I'm thinking the Canucks are hugely looking for a trade to find the money to keep Bo and my guess is that Bo wants to stay.  But who knows.....well, Bo knows of course.

Miller, Brock and Garland trades would each be the more likely scenario I think.

Isn't that what Friedmen and co have been talking about?...maybe it's all just smoke like JT Miller last year. When we played Toronto the other week they made a big deal out of Bo Horvats agent and our management team not meeting while in TO, which they said could indicate he is looking at moving on from the team. Just conjecture at this point I guess. But if Bo is looking to move on I hope we don't lose him for nothing like so many other free agents we've had in the past!

Because every player should be available for the right price. If a team wants to pay the price management sets I have no issue with him being traded. There's also no guarantee he wants to stay, or that he'll remain as cheap as he currently is. He's on pace for a career year at 33 years old, if he makes it to UFA he'll garner plenty of interest. Hell, if we're out of it leading up to the deadline teams will be calling on him, and I think that's more likely than not.

Plus it's unlikely he's a long term asset anyway. I agree the team needs leaders, I don't think that necessarily needs to be Schenn though, and I like Schenn.

For sure, if he isn't re signing then move him. But if he wants to stay i'd definitely be looking at 2-3 years. He honestly won't be asking much. If we got him around 1.5-2 mil per season then i'd be ok with that. If he's wanting more i'd be a bit cautious.

Thing is with Schenn, he has won 2 cups, so probably for him it's about playing time and fit with a team at this age. He fits very well with us, he is a leader, and you can tell he wants to establish something here, so I think he stays for a decent price...but yeah, who knows. I hope he does!

We aren’t a winning team even with BO in the lineup. So what difference would it make for Petey whether BO is here or not?

Honestly this is Peteys team, he has shown us all this year he is ready. Just all around complete player. Never gives up.

Miller signed here because he believes in the young guys here.

Bo is the only one wanting out…not that I blame him, he has endured a lot here. Sell high and move on. I think it’s needed to change our culture here. A new captain is needed. My vote is Petey or Schenn.

  7. Why are we trading Schenn? We all talk about a winning culture and surrounding our young players with proper leadership…but we want to trade Schenn away for a 2nd rounder? Or whatever.

This team needs solid leaders to get them through the tough times ahead, Schenn by far exudes that kind of leadership. And the way he plays he can probably keep that up for another 2-3 years.

He is worth more to this team than any pick or prospect you may get for him in my honest opinion.

  8. Time to blow it up and restock the cupboards. This is the season to do it.

Petey and Hughes are the only ones that still fit a rebuild timeline…but I doubt they stick around. This team has no easy fixes period. No answers for young players challenging for spots either.

Worse than all that is i’m not sold on the drafting ability of our current management group. Our first round pick from last year can barely make a difference in a second tier elite league in Europe…when they drafted him I was like, wow yay another small “skilled” forward…we need a blue chip dman for crying out loud! Or at least a forward with some size and snarl…

Will always cheers for this team, even in the dark days of Messier I still did…but here we are again in dark days. Gonna be a long road till we’re good again.

Maybe just maybe ownership will look around and see that these on the fly rebuilds barely ever work. It pains me to see other teams that started their rebuilds later than us are already back on the upswing again because they actually let their teams bottom out and fill their       prospect pipeline with proper talent.

I love our farm team as well but it’s been year after year of nothing but second/third tier prospects on the team, nothing high end. Constantly they are filling the farm team gaps with career ahlers and echl call ups.

    Enough is enough.

Lind is killing it this year in the AHL - 13 points in 10 games.

He also started killing it for us his last season with us before the expansion draft, was even playing center here and there, and even got some call ups but if I recollect I don’t think he even played!

He is killing it this year for the Kraken farm team. Roasted us pretty good the last game we played them. Hopefully he gets a call up and stays at some point. But you see it lots where guys dominate the A only to disappear in the NHL, I like him and wish him the best. I think his skills are translatable. Sometimes it takes the long game to get these kids to stick in the big league.

Not to worry DeNiro. Livingstone will sign with the Canucks this spring. BC boy comes home to play RD at 6'3" and 210 pounds!

I sure hope the big boy comes home. We need his skill set so badly! Although, I’ll keep myself chill on that front. Hopefully he doesn’t go full Justin Shultz and sign with the Oilers…:sadno:

I'm hoping that a rivalry builds up between Calgary and Abby that helps draw fans in. Properly marketed, it would be beneficial for both teams.

I am very excited to see them square off this season. Hoping so as well. It’s our best chance at a rivalry that’s for sure. All the California teams don’t seem to move the needle much…but hard to do that when no one shows up for the games south of the border!

Not only that, but those two also spent their first year (D+1) back in the CHL.  So it was their D+4 year where they took off in the AHL, and it should be noted that it was the year that the big taxi squads were a thing, so each AHL team had their best few players plucked away permanently on the taxi squad.

Good points as well. Covid really has derailed a lot of younger careers. It’s a shame. At least we have lots of time to develop Klim. Patience is key here. He is very dynamic. If they hone his overall game in a bit more they have a very useful player. He doesn’t need to be a 200 ft two way player, he just needs to keep his head above water defensively, you don’t want to kill that killer offensive instinct of his.

Once he rounds his game out i’m sure we will see the leash loosen a bit on him so he can flex those offensive instincts more.

Weekday games have always had a week turnout, even last year.  Saturday is already around 4500 tickets sold. The AHL is not a big enough draw to sell out every game, especially with there not being a superstar prospect to draw people in.

That makes sense, but i’m used to Utica Comets hockey. I was spoiled watching our prospects there. They literally fill that barn every game no matter what day of the week it is. They have a rabid fan base. And they honestly didn’t much care whether there were high profile prospects or not, they showed up for their team…but you look at the rest of the barns in the AHL it’s pretty bleak for attendance unfortunately. Heck even the Toronto Marlies barely ever fill their rink every game.

If it didn’t cost so much on AHL live to get an all access pass i’d do it just to keep watching Utica games because of the atmosphere they give off there is just fantastic. But unfortunately I just pay to watch my local team so no Utica games for me anymore.

Also side note it’s sad to watch Abby on the road the rinks they play in on the west coast are empty as F…hard to get into the games

Not concerned at all with Klim. He's got lots of time, and he's getting good coaching.

22 year old NHL player is what we should be aiming for, and he's still 19 I believe.

He has time he is 19. I look back to Gadjovich and Lind as good examples of 2nd round picks for us that once they hit the AHL it took them several years to learn how to become a pro. Both started taking off after year 3. The first 2 years they were in and out of the line up learning their game. Unfortunately both haven’t panned out too well. Neither have cemented themselves as full time NHLers.

Klim seems to be taking this route as well. I see a lot of the same things/problems he had last year surfacing this year as well. From everything I hear he is doing his best to learn but the one thing he is also trying to over come compared to Gadj or Lind is the language barrier. I’m sure it’s not easy for the coaching staff or player to try and communicate clearly and be on the same page. If Klim pans out he will IMO be a late blooming prospect. I’d give him another 2 seasons. After that, he is what he is. I’m hoping the best for him. He seems like a good kid.

  15. A pretty ok game overall. Decent chances for both teams. Goalies were a difference in this one. Silovs looked great in this game. I’d say structurally it’s the best i’ve seen from him this year.

Not a very sexy game, was super choppy, no fancy plays, but both teams were clogging up the ice pretty good…

In a defensive battle like this it’s no wonder the coach sat Klimovich in the 3rd. He wasn’t very noticeable tonight, had one good shot on net. But I really want to see more compete from him. When he sees an opportunity he goes for it and it’s fun to watch…but if the puck is away from him he looses his man, floats a bit, looks lost from time to time. But hey this is the league where you clean up those defensive habits. So there is lots of time to mould him.

I personally love our AHL young guys, all compete hard. Perfect game for these 3 guys…Wouters, Nielsen, and Bains. All know how to play a solid game.

Woo had an ok game, physical but still clunky with the puck, still a work in progress.

Quick shout out to the vets on the team. They keep this team trending in the right direction.

Want to send a shot across the bow however to the fans in Abby…where the hell are you!? You filled the rink to capacity the first game but since then your barn is barely half full!! Get out there and support your team!

    That is all for now

What has happened to the Podz?  Overwhelmed? Don't get it.

Possibly, kinda reminds me how his KHL coaches treated him too. His minutes were very up and down or just scratched entirely.

I wonder if he is a slow burn prospect like Nicushkin was…that guy took forever to come into his own…but look at him now.

As long as he can make a difference on the 3rd or 4th lines I don’t mind taking our time with him. He’s worth the wait.

I don't really get the sense EF is in the market of making up stories up for 'clickbait'. He has worked his way to the top by relaying credible information that comes his way. He's been doing this for a long time and I think it would be extremely short sighted to just start fabricating a story like this out of thin air.

I'm not some huge EF fan, but comparing his actions to the likes of what guys like Eklund and other charlatans have been doing for years is a bit of a reach. There's no question there are guys out there who are solely interested in trying to monetize on the hockey rumor craze, but EF ain't one of them IMO.

Scouts of teams are known in the hockey community and if the isles have scouts in our building then it would make sense they would get noticed by people in the 'know' and this info would naturally make its way to someone like EF.  Pro scouting it isn't exactly uncommon in the NHL. It's really not that unbelievable that this could be happening in any context, let alone with the team having the start we've had.

As dysfunctional as this team has been for the last 10 years, there's no question right now we have a lot of high end talent that is presumably up for grabs it makes perfect sense that Lou would be the type of GM that would be ready to vulture some of this talent if it became available at a good price.

I agree with EFs credibility. He has a job to do at the end of the day. At least if he gets things completely sideways wrong, he will be the first one apologizing on TV/radio/online that he made a mistake. I respect that. I still feel like he goes about his business with integrity…compared to his fellow counter parts.

Is he Bob Mackenzie, no. But he’s working his way there I think.

Personally, I think it's not if we lose Bo. I think we are losing Bo. his pricing himself out of Vancouver. and it's clear that management wants Miller, and not Bo as part of this team. How can the team afford to pay both 8M plus, because whatever number Bo's camp was asking for before, I gaurantee you that's not what they're asking for now.

I think there are ways to keep Horvat, but yeah it’s not looking good lol. He is definitely proving management wrong about his “couturier” comparison.

  19. Pageau and Mayfield would round this team out. Boesers cap hit with those 2 is pretty much a wash. Would have to add a bit but Mayfield is a UFA, so may be able to get him for a bit less than normal, especially if he isn’t re signing in NY…yes both are older but they give this team more of what it needs. Pageau is a top tier 3 c and can win face offs no problem, plus insulates us if we lose Bo and can’t resign him, Mayfield solidifies our RD hole, plus adds some major grit to our back end. He’s way better than most our RD on this team. Which doesn’t say much lol, but he is.

The islanders are my eastern team, love the way both these players play the game. There are a lot of interesting names on that team I would love to have on ours…but realistically those are the two I could see coming our way in a trade.
