Wonder if the Canucks will somehow win a lottery spot, or possibly trading up, and where they'll draft. With the new rules and if VAN intends on being good every year (playoffs), they'll never get a 1st OA.  I don't like the new rules. Suggested this before and I still stand by it:

    # of years without a 1st OA = 1 lottery ball

Canucks would have 52 fricken balls in there. BUF would have zero.  Seeing as they just got Power, that seems fair.

No clue who they'd pick at any number. This is JR/PA, what kind of drafting will they do?  My guess is analytics will play a large part.

a RD is priority, but unless they're in the Top 5, forget it, unless they really love Chesley or Luneau at #15

If they did implement your idea for the lottery then every team would have to start with a clean slate at zero. Interesting take though

Any of you guys got lists after U18s?

I’m way too excited for this draft class, so many intriguing prospects, more then I will list here but I’ll do my top 15 with a 5 honourable mentions. Would love to see how your list is looking now too.

    1) Shane Wright

    2) Juraj Slafkovsky

    3) Logan Cooley

    4) David Jiricek

    5) Simon Nemec

    6) Frank Nazar

    7) Matt Savoie

    8) Jonathan Lekkerimaki

    9) Kevin Korchinski

    10) Gleb Trikozov

    11) Pavel Mintyukov

    12) Rutger McGroarty

    13) Denton Mateychuk

    14) Marco Kasper

    15) Liam Ohgren

Honourable mentions being Filip Mesar, Tristan Luneau, Joakim Kemmell, Cutter Gauthier and Owen Pickering.

I have Jiricek over Nemec because I think his ceiling is higher but also believe Nemec has the higher floor. I couldn’t put Geekie on my list because of lack of effort and footspeed and when those are combined it’s really worrisome to me.

  3. I could see the Avs being in on him but I don’t think Byram should be the big piece we are after (love the player but injury history is worrisome). Byram, a late future first and so so prospects isn’t enough, if they’d move Newhook in the deal over Byram I’m all for it but I don’t think they will.

I see the Rangers landing him this off-season, they have the most prospects/young players to offer in a swap with quality Dmen and forwards to make the right combination.

Very curious to see how it shakes out

Yes, in short, lack of upside. Maybe "anywhere in the first" was a slight exaggeration on Chesley. After 25 or so I'd be more ok with it. But he doesn't get me excited for a top 15 pick.

Maybe part of it is I just don't think this draft is as weak as others do. If it was last year's class, then yeah maybe top 20 or 25. But there's a lot of players in this draft I'd be stoked to see the Canucks take at 15. Aside from the kinda consensus top 12-14, I'm really high on Trikozov (although with the Russian thing...). Korchinski, Gauthier, McGroarty, Howard, Luneau, Mateychuk, Kasper, and at least a couple others.

And then when you're talking about more of a defensive-first guy like that, it would be nice to have them be 6'2 or 6'3 or better (Pickering, Lammoureux).

So yeah, I just think there are a lot of players with much higher upside, and many of them don't come with all that much risk either.

I like all of the players you mentioned, Trikozov is very intriguing to me. I really like Chesley and just think he’s the perfect fit for this this team (particularly Hughes) but I would  take most of the guys you mentioned ahead of him. On the back end I definitely take Pickering, Luneau, Korchinski and Mateychuk ahead of him and think 3 of those 4 will probably be available to us.

Wouldn't really say I have DNDs. Just players I'd rave ranked later that most. Not the biggest fan of Joakim Kemell, but I guess if the Canucks got him at 14 or 15 I'd be cool with it.

I'd be very disappointed with either of Chesley or Salomonsson in anywhere in the first round.

Would prefer to stay away from any Russians. I guess I'd be ok with Yurov at 15, considering I have him 4th on my overall list.

Why is it you don’t like Chesley? Is it the lack of offensive upside? I think he would fit the Canucks group really well, we could use a right shot Dman that’s strong and reliable defensively. His positioning and awareness is at a pretty high level and he makes good first passes even when he’s under pressure. I, obviously, personally like him but am just curious as to why you don’t? Over the years I’ve seen a lot of your takes I absolutely agree with so I’m not saying you’re wrong I’m just genuinely curious.

  6. 2 minutes ago, VancouverHabitant said:

Yurov could definitely fall to us at 15.

The buzz from some draft gurus is that teams are extremely cold on drafting Russians.

I hope we go all Russian in rounds 3 through 7.

I think he will go in the few picks before us but wouldn’t be shocked if he was available to us

  7. Outside of a Kemmell, Lekkerimaki or Yurov potentially falling to us (which I don’t think will happen, but much weirder things have) if management decides to take a forward I’d be stoked with Kasper, Gauthier or McGroarty. I wouldn’t be mad with Lambert because he’s got the tools and a high ceiling but scares me. On D it would be great if one of Mintyukov, Mateychuk or Korchinski fell to us but if not sign me up for Luneau or Pickering. I really like Chesley a ton and think he’ll make some team really happy but I could see a lot of hate on these boards if we took him at 15

True. But the guys with the letter are the ones who have the responsibility to lead especially by example.

Yes but leading can be done in many ways by many different people. There’s the Yzermans, Messiers and Linden approach (varying degrees but similar in approach) and there’s also the Lisdstrom, Sakic and Hank approach. Leading by example is still leading whether you’re in guys faces on the bench or not

  9. 1 hour ago, wallstreetamigo said:

I am talking leadership though, not skill or who was the better player.

Guys followed Linden through the wall and knew he would be the first one through. Never got that vibe off the Sedins tbh.

I agree with that, but the letter doesn’t mean everything. If you have other guys on your team (Sedins had Kesler, Burrows and Bieksa to name a few) then your team should be fine. Leadership doesn’t come down to 3 guys wearing a letter, it’s a leadership group of guys in the room that bring that out

  10. 1 minute ago, wallstreetamigo said:

Have you watched him play the last two years? He has been much different in terms of lead by example intensity. Maybe Boudreau can get him back to that.

The fact that you would take Henrik Sedin over Linden as captain tells me you weren’t around for the 94 run. Linden played like a beast and almost willed the team to a cup against all odds and while severely injured.

I was definitely there for the 94 run. Linden was very impressive during that run and I still take Hank over him and it’s not really close. Henrik was an elite player during his prime where Linden was a good player during his. In terms of purely leadership intangibles, sure Linden had Hank beat but as players they’re in different tiers

  11. 35 minutes ago, wallstreetamigo said:

I have been saying Horvat is too Sedin like in terms of being apathetic about losing for years now. He was only an actual emotional captain that played a bit rough and tumble before he got the C really. Since he has changed to a much more perimeter game and an excuse making persona. He is more like Tanner Pearson than Trevor Linden.

So it’s not a switch to a different agenda because of the coach and GM being fired.

Of course you know this because every time I mention Horvat and his apathetic approach to leadership you respond. So you are the one trying to shift the narrative.

Horvat is a good player. I love him. But he is not the next Linden as a leader like many think. He is the next Henrik Sedin. And clearly this team needs a stronger voice that hates losing. It’s why Miller has been apparently able to step in that role a bit more.

I’ll take a Henrik Sedin over a Trevor Linden every day of the week. And we have no idea how he is in the locker room, you’re assuming because he’s not fired up for the media that he can’t get emotional behind closed doors? In a market like Vancouver if you get fiery with the media it can turn into a $&!# storm. Watch Bo play and watch his demeanour on the ice, he’s not this passive guy you deem him

Hmm. That’s true. Brock and James are supposed goal scorers are they not?

But who’s the better skater? Because I find that has a lot to do with the way players are efficient on the ice. If they have a high hockey IQ, and have a great shot, but they can’t skate to get to pucks, then that part of their game is such a huge deficit that they’re not really good players.

What is wrong with Brock this season? Is it mental? Is it physical? I’m willing to bet that he’s injured again. I want the young man to do well, but I don’t think he’s ever been fully healthy as a Canuck has he?

The most he’s played in any given season, since being drafted by the Canucks is 69 games back in 2018/2019.

    That’s almost 3 years ago.

Since then, he’s played 57, 56, and so far this season, 21 games.

He doesn’t seem to be able to keep healthy, and at 24 years old is already injury prone. I like Boeser. I wish there was a way to keep him without having him sign 7.5M, because to me, he’s not worth 7.5M. I’m sure some stupid GM will offer him that thinking that he’ll provide more and stay healthy. If he takes 5.5-6.5M, I’d sign him to a 3-4 year deal if he agrees to that.

But it looks more and more likely that the likeliest scenario for Brock is that he’ll be traded eventually. I was thinking of getting a Boeser jersey. I’m glad I held out of that. Heck, I haven’t bought any merchandise until some changes happen. Until then, Aquilini’s aren’t getting a dime from me.

Just because he’s due a 7.5 million dollar QO doesn’t mean that’s what it would potentially take to sign him. I’m sure he’d prefer a contract with some term over a QO and on a contract with some term it would

    probably come in under 7.5

Patrice Bergeron with slightly less defensive awareness, but possibly higher offensive upside. He's outlandishly skilled, and has tremendous leadership qualities at his age.

While I agree his upside is "not McDavid or MacKinnon", he does look a little like a mini-MacKinnon out there. Same body-type, similar attributes, just not as explosive.

Explosiveness is really what makes Mackinnon what he is. I agree Wright has the same body type and both have strong shots and great minds but Mack is a bull, strong and explosive. To me Mackinnon without the explosiveness is a similar stylistic player to Crosby. Wright is still so young he has plenty of time to add that strength particularly in his lower half but only time will tell.

I guess I meant comparable as in Wright’s “style” of game. Some people have said Stamkos as someone he’s being compared to, in terms of the style of his game.

I don’t see a lot of Stamkos in his game. Stylistically I think he’s of the same vein as Crosby/Bergeron. Very hard working all over the ice and has great ability

  15. 17 hours ago, hammertime said:

Do you mean this in the sense that you don't see another player in this draft who is Captain material from the center position who plays a straight line power game???

I mean thats very specific. Also Bo Horvat's floor wasn't "Bo Horvat" lol if that makes sense since no matter what he was going to be Bo Horvat. Most good 2 way 200ft all situations players didn't project their floors to be top 6 players case and point Bo Horvat most projected as a defensive 3C. I think Gaucher and McGroarty currently project as well if not better than Bo did in his draft year.

Are there other players in this draft that have floors of being better players than Bo. I think so. But they aren't Bo and don't have the same qualities as Bo. They project to be better in their own ways. Nemec I think you can pencil in as a top 4 RHD, Miroshnichenko looks like a 30+ goal scorer, Savoie and Cooley 2 high skill guys I betcha 1 busts and the other is a PPG player in their prime. But that's the fun of prospects none of them are the complete package out of the box.

When I said I see his floor as a Bo Horvat I’m saying he looks like he’ll be a competent 2nd line C that plays the game the right way even if he doesn’t reach his full potential. And I’m not saying Bo didn’t reach his full potential because I absolutely think he did. I just see that as the minimum we will see out of Wright after he’s adjusted to the NHL level. There is some absolutely incredible looking prospects in this class, some guys with very high ceilings I just don’t think they have the same floor as Wright

  16. 16 hours ago, N4ZZY said:

He's not a McDavid or McKinnon, then what is his comparable?

I find comparables fairly silly as every player is different. But stylistically his style of game would be more Crosby then Mcdavid/Mackinnon. I used Mcdavid and Mackinnon as examples of the tier of player opposed to style. Wright is good in all zones, doesn’t necessarily depend on speed or high end puck skills but a great overall game. Crosby has been called the greatest grinder of all time because he doesn’t beat teams like a Mcdavid does

  17. Shane Wright hasn’t gotten off to a tremendous start like most would have predicted but he’s still the clear cut 1 right now. What he brings is a translatable game which slot of young prospects don’t. Wright is going to be a damn good NHLer. As a floor he’s probably a Bo Horvat, the ceiling isn’t Mcdavid or Mackinnon but it’s a top line C. I don’t think any other prospect in this class has a floor of a Horvat. Wright isn’t my favourite prospect in this class but I think he’s the obvious number 1 at this point in time, there are guys that could go on tears and if he continues to produce as he has maybe someone jumps him but I don’t think that will happen

  18. It would just show how desperate the Canucks are if they made a move for Kane, I don’t care if the Sharks were able to retain 100% I wouldn’t take him. If the rumours are true and it’s a fractured locker room then why add its biggest cancer? Avoid him like the plague. It would be such a Jim Benning move to bring him in though. What a scary time to be a Canucks fan

  19. 44 minutes ago, VancouverHabitant said:

Landing Simon Nemec would be a homerun for me. Where do you guys think that he will land? Are we thinking 5th to 10th overall?

I think he’ll go 3-7 range. There’s still so much hockey and evaluating left but I see him going around 5 and not being there at 10. Some very exciting and intriguing guys in this class

  20. The top 5 players I’d like to see the Canucks land with this years first, and I’m leaving Wright (the obvious #1) off the list because we should all know that the Canucks luck will not allow us that pick.
    #1 Matt Savoie

    #2 Juraj Slafkovsky

    #3 Simon Nemec

    #4 Conor Geekie

    # Danila Yurov

Honourable mentions to Kemell, Cooley and Jiricek.

  21. The GM needs to go first, there’s no question or doubt about that. No one should have confidence in him hiring our next coach, not after what we’ve seen from the coaches he’s hired. And absolutely no one should want him making a trade out of desperation to keep his job, and any trade he makes will be just that. Hire a new GM, let him make his assessments on a coaching staff and move forward there himself and let him make any roster decisions as they won’t be as short sighted as JBs tenure.

I don’t think that’s what will happen, but it should.

  22. 4 minutes ago, The Lock said:

I think Green will be gone before Benning. Usually a GM gets to fire the coach 1st as a last ditch effort to try and turn the tides. When Benning fired WD, the tides did turn somewhat giving Benning a 2nd coach to be able to fire before gettting fired himself in my opinion.

I agree that I think that will happen, but I don’t think it should. If Benning gets to fire Green then I hope they just make someone in the organization an interim head coach, if JB is on the brink of being fired himself it makes no sense to let him pick the next coach. Let the next GM make that decision
