I do believe last year was a blip.
And here is why!
1. He has shown well in the SHL in a limited appearance as a draft eligible
2. He has an elite shot
3. He has high end offensive IQ
4. He is a better playmaker than he is given credit
5. He is working on his game diligently
6. Samuelsson is working with him a lot especially in regards to battles, puck protection and board work.
7. I believe he performs best when with higher end forwards and will thrive in the SHL where players are on average more positionally sound
8. He will be a top 6 fixture for a full season in the SHL (if not then we have a problem)
9. He is healthy and will go into next season after a proper off season training
10. His injuries, sickness etc are all valid reasons for having an Asterix of a season. The fact he finished strong when it mattered most, with the most pressure in the playoffs was a great sign. And gave the kid some positive momentum to go into his offseason.
11. He will have his final WJC appearance this winter, and he will be expected to be a play driving impact offensive force for Sweden and its hosted in his hometown. Stage is set.
I am excited for JL season and I think everyone here should be as well.
@HighOnHockey What do you think?
Absolutely. Can't wait to see what he does with hopefully a full season of SHL and being one of the go-to guys for Sweden at World Juniors. We all remember what happened last time he played a major tournament against his own age group - he had the 15th best p/g in the history of the tournament, 6th best of the last ten years.
I think everyone who was paying attention understands that the slight frame, exacerbated by mono, was the primary cause for his struggles and injury.
I followed him pretty closely this past season, watching occasional games and checking in on the stats. His corsi reflected his struggles early; he was around 45% after the first few games, but it steadily improved to finish the regular season at 53%. You could see his confidence growing going into the playoffs, and once moved to the top line with Ohgren and Kruger the trio was dominant, with Lekkerimaki finishing at 56% corsi. He and Ohgren working the cycle together was a thing of beauty. Too bad they'll be on different teams this year, but Leo Carlsson is not a bad consolation prize for a linemate if they end up together.

After having been a laughing stock of the NHL throughout most of the Eugene Melnyk era (R.I.P.), an investment group led by Daniel Alfredsson purchased the team, hired Jason Spezza as POHO, and after much deliberation, brought on HighOnHockey to GM, committed to return the franchise to it's "Pizza Day" levels of dominance.
Roster so far:
Jason Robertson (C) - John Tavares (A) - Jack Quinn
Branden Hagel - Joel Eriksson Ek -
- Wyatt Johnston -
J.J. Moser - Brent Burns
Jeremy Swayman
Comments from Bruce Garrioch: "HOH always gives precedence to veterans and lets the next generation earn their way up the lineup, so leave it to Ottawa to commit their 3rd round pick to 3rd line center for the next two years. They'll need to be smart about the money, but look for them to add veterans to push Quinn, Moser, and Swayman down the lineup"

And the Senators feel even ickier to name John Tavares alternate captain.

I'm all for an angry mob as much as the next guy, and was not aware of the rule change either, but I dunno if this warrants a mutiny.

Jack Quinn has an injury to his achilles. The expected duration is 5 months.
Aren't a lot of teams drafting prospects already?

Thanks @Gally for keeping my list. Thought you might appreciate this article/blog I came across,
Everything Eriksson Ek has been able to accomplish offensively to this point in his career he did in a highly defensive role with highly defensive-minded (or just not all that good?) linemates. With Boldy on his wing now and hopefully Ohgren/Yurov/Khusnutdinov soon, I think the production will start to show.

Charlie Elick has continued to prove he's one of, if not the best defensive defenseman in the draft, but the more I see of him I'm not sure he has the offensive skills or abilities that would make him an early first round pick.
Ryder Ritchie was a player I thought was noticeable at U17s last fall but didn't quite stand out enough on the scoresheet or by the eye test to warrant early first round consideration. That may be changing this tournament, as he's been one of Canada's best players throughout on arguably the top line with McQueen and Beaudoin.
Every year there's those players that were considered phenoms from a very young age but stop growing at under 6'0 or less and it creates a lot of uncertainty with their draft status - see Matthew Savoie and Zach Benson in the past couple drafts. This year that is Berkly Catton. Lots of similarities to Zach Benson in that their main strength is elite 200-foot IQ. Catton looks like an easy top ten pick going by the stats and his play against his peers at international tournaments, but we'll see.
I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with Henry Mews' puck management. I said a while back he could end up being a very early pick if he can clean up some things with his decision-making. I know it's early but if this tournament is any indication, I'm just not seeing it. Zayne Parekh has been the more interesting Canadian defenseman so far; he continues to struggle in his own zone but his puck movement and playmaking have been outstanding - such a dynamic skater.

Every time I see someone has posted in the draft thread, I check to see if someone picked.
It's usually never a pick.

How did Jiricek look? I've been fawning over his brother since CBJ took him...
Phenomenal. Could end up the best defenseman in the class. Others like Mews and Parekh may be flashier and guys like Dickinson and Levshunov may be bigger and more physically imposing, but Jiricek is an incredible skater, and he's a play-driver; seemed like he must have played 30 minutes in this one and he was everything for his team. He's decisive and assertive in his decision-making, both in terms of deciding to jump into the play offensively and deciding to step up defensively at the blueline. But the most astonishing thing is he's supposedly still listed at ~150 lbs; when you see how well he handles himself in puck battles at the pro level, it's almost unbelievable he's as slight as he's listed.

Just had to double check some things. Actually I'll go ahead and name Robertson captain.

Well with that pick we've set ourselves a course as far as cap structure and winning timeline. Three year contention window will be the initial focus. Going to hold off on naming a captain for the time being.
