Well no shit Cole Beaudoin was player of the game for Canada. One of the sole consistently bright spots in a pretty uninspired Canadian effort. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite players in the draft.
Obviously Suoniemi was the hero for Finland, but Hemming and Miettinen had really strong games, as usual.
Looking forward to seeing Adam Jiricek in action against USA (not the NTDP - they send their B team to this tournament) later this morning.

Thanks again for hosting and teaching me along the way @Gator. With that said, with the 1st overall pick, I'd like to select the 4th coming of our savior, Connor Bedard.
Oh shit was not actually expecting that. And we're off!

Last 2 years Benson had 161 pts in 118 reg season WHL games and 40 pts in 30 playoff games.
Local kid.
He will be ready to play in the NHL in a year.
Curious what makes you think that?

Still waiting to see what happens with Sam Gagner, but with this latest trade our lineup is basically set for the season:
Jeff Skinner - Tage Thompson - Mark Stone
Artturi Lehkonen - Sidney Crosby - Ryan Hartman
Warren Foegele - Anze Kopitar - Pierre Engvall
Jimmy Vesey - Nic Dowd - Christian Fischer
Drew O'Connor / Sam Gagner (?)
Devon Toews - Erik Karlsson
John Klingberg - Erik Gustafsson
Alexandre Carrier - Sean Durzi
Ian Mitchell
Sergei Bobrovsky
Karel Vejmelka
We'd consider moving this 4th we just acquired to a team that's willing to take on a few dead weight minor league contracts (mostly one year left).

We have a trade to announce...
To CAR - Blake Wheeler (33% retained by San Jose for 2023-24 season, 17% retained by Vancouver for 2023-24 season)
To SJS - CBJ 2024 4th Round Pick
To VAN - Gavin WhiteWell, we had a pretty good idea what we were getting ourselves into when we signed Skinner, but holy smokes that was a difficult and frustrating little saga we're happy to have dealt with. Huge thanks to all parties involved - Nail for working with us to find a suitable trade partner that Wheeler would waive to and that saw value in him (and had the cap space), thanks to @D-Money for just being reasonable, and to @theo5789 for expressing interest in 3rd party retention early in the process and checking in throughout to help find a fit.
We thank Wheeler for his service and wish him and Carolina all the best in the East this year.

Sharks top 20 prospects after the draft and free-agency:
1. William Eklund - Had a bounceback year offensively after a bit of a rough D+1 season. We'll continue to bring him along slowly but expect he'll see stretches up with the big club this year.
2. Liam Ohgren - Took him some time to acclimate to pro hockey, but by the time he came back from World Juniors he was a staple on Djurgarden's top line and on the scoresheet. Looking forward to seeing what he can do with a full season in SHL and hopeful he can make the jump the following season.
3. Sasha Chmelevski - At just 23 he emerged as one of the best all-around centers in the KHL last year. To our great dismay he extended for another year with Salavat Yulaev but we're optimistic he dominates that league this year and comes back the following year ready to jump right in and do damage.
4. Logan Mailloux - Would have to be considered the best defense prospect in our system right now, and our highest ranking new addition.. A bit of a project as he's well behind in his development compared to other prospects his age due to a lot of games lost the previous couple years.
5. Gavin Hayes - Has been variously compared to Nathan MacKinnon and Zack Kassian. The truth will lay somewhere in between but we're confident he'll be an impact player for us down the road. Was somewhat inconsistent in the OHL this year but went on a couple of torrid stretches, including 13 goals in his final 9 games of the regular season.
6. Bryce McConnell-Barker
7. Vadim Zherenko
8. Aram Minnetian
9. Adam Beckman
10. Topias Vilen
11. Jake Richard
12. Noah Laba
13. Aaron Pionk
14. Jeremy Hanzal
15. Oskari Salminen
16. Nick Cicek
17. Ethan Haider
18. Curtis Douglas
19. Joel Nystrom
20. Frederik Dichow

I think it's a great fit, as I love the concept of a full-scale rebuild, but really don't think I'd have the patience for it myself. To be able to jump on board a couple years in with all the good work Ilunga has already done, it's still a long road ahead but feels like there's already some light at the end of the tunnel. We're working on getting on the same page for a big picture plan and coming up with some concrete ideas to execute.

Unfortunately unless they're hitting the statsheet somewhere there's really no way to earn points in any fantasy format.
I am thinking about making the scoring as follows. Subject to change.

SH Point: 2 points
OT Point: 1 points
GWG: 1 points
+/-: 1 point per each + ratingPIM: 0.25 points per minute

Blocked shots: 0.25 points
Hat-Trick: 3 points
Shootout Winning Goal: 1 point
Defenseman:G: 5 points
A: 5 points
PP Point: 1 point
SH Point: 2 points
OT Point: 1 points

Goaltenders:
W: 10 points
OT/Shootout Loss: 5 points
SO: 10 points
G: 99 points
A: 10 points
PIM: 0.25 points per minuteIf we have hits and blocks do we still need PIM? I know it's kind of been a pool/fantasy staple for decades just to try to provide value to a wider variety of players. While hits and blocks aren't perfect, they're more useful positive stats than PIMs, which should almost be a negative stat.

The San Jose Sharks have signed Jeff Skinner to a 4 year contract worth $24.000M ($6.000M AAV).
Well between the Barkov trade yesterday and this signing today putting us close to 6 million over the cap, we expect to face the ire of the rest of the league. But with Stone's season in question, we wanted to make sure we had some insurance, and after we traded DeBrincat for Stone, we were able to replace him asset-free with what we believe currently to be the better player with better short-term playoff hopes for cheaper. We'll continue casually shopping Wheeler in the meantime, but if September rolls around and Stone is set to play or we're still unsure, we know we have the buyout option.
This also puts us right back into a sticky cap situation for the 2024/'25 season, but with the cap expected to rise significantly next summer, and with Stone and Bobrovsky without trade protection, we're confident we can figure it out when we get there.

To SJS - Anze Kopitar, John Klingberg, Alexandre Carrier, Curtis Douglas
To VAN - Aleksander Barkov, Carson Soucy, Reilly Walsh, SJS 2025 5th Round PickWell this was a tough one to swallow, and I fully expected to raise some eyebrows. We tried like crazy to trade Thomspon all last season to no avail, and at this point we're set on keeping him. But to sign him we couldn't have three franchise centers under contract beyond this year. Between Crosby's age, NMC and questionable playoff status, we knew we wouldn't be able to get fair value for him. So we tried something different.
With this trade we'll free up our cap structure a lot for the following year, needing to sign Toews, Hartman, Thompson and Vejmelka. We were pretty sure '24/'25 was going to be our re-tooling year, but with this move we believe we can extend our contention window another year.
We'll be in a win-win dilemma with Kopitar in that if he has a huge year, we know he won't re-sign to play behind Thompson and Sid, but if he has some regression we might be able to extend him. We also diversified our playoff teams, still having one Panther in Bobrovsky, but added impact players for L.A. and Toronto, two teams whose chances we like to win some rounds.

Yeah I get what you're saying. Just feels like where does Fabbro play for us? Don't think he is a top pair partner for Hughes, Hronek is our 2nd pair RD. I could see him on the bottom pair which would be great, but Meyers can't be here if so.
Well, he was Roman Josi's regular full-time partner two years ago.

I am a fan of that, but I will need to try and find a sweet spot.. I don't want to see a Borowieki or Gudas become a top 10 Dman in the league making like $2M aav lol.. But I do like the outside the box scoring.. Haven't really discussed the scoring structure behind the scenes yet, but we will be looking into it shortly for sure.
Priority atm is teamsheets and filling up the league. With only 14 spots available, I would say we're ahead of schedule right now, so hopefully it won't be too long for a CBA to be rolled out.
Also I will always be an open ear for ideas to improve the league, even after the CBA is released. This is my first time trying to organize something this big so I'm sure it won't be perfect, but getting ideas like this from y'all will really help me form this league into one everyone can enjoy!
A good friend of mine once pointed out to me prominently regarding an ESPN Keeper league: "significant quantitative blocked shots just means they can't get the puck out of their own zone and have to block a lot of shots."

Hey all. So when @Relyt Krets approached me last fall about returning to the league I told him I didn't think I could keep up with a second league right now - I can't for the life of me comprehend how some of you do 3 or 4 leagues - and I asked if I could apply to be an AGM, to which I was told that's not typically something GML does. So I reluctantly accepted a GM position, and now I failed to qualify Daniil Tarasov and lost him to free agency, and didn't even notice it happened until 2 or 3 weeks later.
So I need a break from trying to run my own team right now, but would still be interested in an AGM position to learn the ropes if anyone would have me. Little bit of a C.V. here: I'm still pretty new to this style of league (although have been in-depth armchair GMing and winning hockey pools for decades). With some help from a couple buddies we took the CDCFL Sharks from 21st place when we took over to 4th in our first year and 3rd in our second year (both 2nd round playoff exits so far though), while still improving a shallow prospect pool. Branching off on my own I took over two GML teams that were in pretty rough shape and in the span of a few months turned them into pretty desirable franchises.
Strengths:
- my main interest is in prospects and the draft. I follow the draft-eligible prospects very closely every year, so I like to think I'm good at the draft, but anyone else has access to Bob McKenzie and all sorts of other sources anyway. I like to think I come to have a pretty good grasp on a lot of the prospects each year and why they might succeed or fail, so oftentimes a couple years out from the draft I might be better able than others to contextualize why prospect A has struggled to produce at X level but still looks like a good NHL prospect, or vice versa why prospect B has been lighting up Y league but might not translate so well to higher levels.
- creative problem solving - I love to go looking through team sheets, trying to understand what each team is trying to do, and finding the teams that could be a fit for what my team needs to get done.
- I'm no mathemetician by a damn sight, but I try to stay as up-to-date as I can on developments in analytics.
Weaknesses:
- See the username; obviously I'm a lifelong stoner, so keeping up with deadlines and day-to-day operations can sometimes get the best of me. Sometimes players will be called up IRL and I don't notice and leave them in minors for weeks or months.
- Not really a people person; can tend to rub folks the wrong way and it can sometimes hinder trade negotiations. Another reason an AGM position would be good for me, as the GM can handle most negotiations with other GMs.
- Contracts and cap structure maybe not my specialty. My buddy Josh handles a lot of that for me in CDCFL I don't have a lot of patience and can go a little high-risk with the mentality that I can always problem-solve my way out of whatever conundrum I get myself in.
Lemme know via CDC or Discord if you think we might be a good fit.

I'm going to have to step down as GM of the Columbus Blue Jackets, effective immediately. Thanks to @Relyt Krets for pushing to bring me back and to @Mike Vanderhoek for walking me through a lot of the rules and procedures. I like to think it wasn't all for nought as I had fun at the draft and I believe I left the franchise in a much better situation than how I found it.

Simon Zether is definitely a person of interest for me this year if I'm looking for a realistic target.
Biggest wildcard I think is Cole Hutson how far will he drop due to his size? He could be a special player where he goes will be very interesting. I like his game much more than I liked his brother Lane's at this age.
I think you're right. I dunno if I'd say "much" more, as Lane was always sensational in his own right. Cole's game is definitely more refined at this age. I've been watching games here and there and I think I've seen just about every game from this past U17s now, and it would be pretty silly to argue that anyone other than Hutson was the best defenseman at the tournament. Of course that's not the same thing as best NHL defense prospect, but Hutson was right there with Eiserman and Hagens as the needle-movers for that historic NTDP performance.

How's this Levshunov kid? He's got size, can skate, and offense. And he's a RD
I wanted to tag @R3aL for this one, as I believe it was him I was talking to about James Hagens, and he said he didn't really notice Hagens at U18s. Like a William Eklund or Matvei Michkov, Hagens' dynamic skating is elite, and while Eiserman's shot gets all the attention, Hagen's shot is actually is pretty stellar in his own right. But the thing that sets Hagens apart from everyone else is his IQ. At U17s he outwitted everyone, every time, all over the ice. So at U18s against elite older players (some close to two years older), it was interesting to see him losing some of those chess matches and he just wasn't quite able to assert his will the way he has at lower levels.
I've always said my favorite part of scouting is watching for these head-to-head matchups between top prospects. This game was the first game I saw of Levshunov, who is a little more than a year older than Hagens. To my mind, Hagens should dominate 99.9% of players within a year's age difference from him, so Levshunov immediately gained mad respect from me for this shift, and I'd invite anyone interested to scroll down to the "Full Game Replay" and watch starting around 1:27:58, and pay attention to 54 in white and 9 in black, but more specifically watch how even shorthanded Hagens consistently gets the best of everyone else in black, but how much trouble he has with Levshunov:

Oh man I'm a big Elick fan too. Still so early but he looks like maybe the best defensive defenseman in the class so far. The others you mentioned are all really interesting too.

Cole Eiserman will make a strong push for 1OA
9G in 7GP at the U18s from the third line is an impressive feat.
Some of the records he is dangling with include ones previously held by Caufield, Crosby, Toews and even Ovechkin.
His clip was higher than Toews.
Not long ago at Shattuck's, he was at a higher clip than Macklin, with incredible G totals:
Until he proves, that he can't score nearly G/GP everywhere he goes, the thought of a potential 50G scorer in the NHL will be tough to pass up.
Though teams prefer the center, the race between Macklin and Cole is a close one, and it's far from declared over...
Agreed, I'm not sure it's a one or two-horse race though. The field looks pretty open to me. Demidov looks like an electric offensive talent. NHL GMs are going to go apeshit over a defenseman like Dickinson, and maybe Levshunov too. And I can't wait to see what Cayden Lindstrom can do with a full season with Gavin McKenna on his flank.

I am leaning towards 2 seperate drafts. I feel if I combine them some GMs will lean too much 1 way. I want a good balance throughout the league, with all teams having a solid mix of NHL talent and prospects.
I'm thinking between 30-40 rounds for the fantasy draft, and a 10 round 22/23 prospects draft. It's not set in stone yet, but that's the way I'm currently leaning.
Not sure it matters what you want. Things will soon organically sort themselves into rebuilding and contending teams either way. Personally I think it would spice things up if teams can choose off the hop to go all-in for the here-and-now or all-out on prospects and youth to build for the future.
30-40 rounds not including prospects? What in tarnation?

Yeah this one was pretty brutal. The sad thing is most of their top scouts are former goalies and they've been a goaltending factory for the rest of the league for the past decade, but they just can't seem to pick the right ones to keep.
