I've been noticing this as well...a lot of signals... -
Because they believe they're not. Telling these people they're ignorant for voting against their own interests or furthering inequality/racism/etc is futile without a civil conversation about why you believe they are, in fact, voting against their best interests and also hearing them out on why they believe the contrary. For the record, I whole-heartedly agree with you.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Yes, there is a logical fallacy in what I originally said, but I wasn't trying to make the claim Trump and his supporters weren't racist, I was trying to point out that many of his voters simply just don't understand how their support for Trump further perpetuates toxic racism in America. The extremists who yell and shout for white supremacy? Just ignore that white noise (no pun intended). Those are hopeless idiots that aren't worth our time. I'm talking about the other millions of regular Joes who genuinely believe in his anti-establishment, "for the people" mantra. Calling these people racists right off the bat isn't going to do any good, it just causes more division. You need to come at it from a different angle. Many people on the Left need to better understand where these voters are coming from instead of automatically demonizing them. Did some of the voters have some serious policy considerations that led them to vote for Trump? Are they simply unaware of the serious residual effects on Black Americans, even after the Civil Rights Act? Do they believe lower taxes will better there socioeconomic circumstances? You need to have dialogue over these types of things instead of just pointing the finger and yelling "racist." Are Republicans guilty of pointing the finger at Lefties and just calling them snowflakes? Of course. And that's the problem. Racist! Snowflake! Socialist! Fascist! Throwing these words around at each other gets no one anywhere. It just makes things worse and that's why the title of this thread resonates with me. People on both sides constantly feel like they're being persecuted for their political beliefs. Why would you want to have a conversation with someone on the opposite of the aisle when you feel like they're just going to persecute you for what you believe in? Like many here, I believe it's right to call out Trump for so many things. Yes, he has widened racial divisions. Yes, he deserves to be impeached. Yes, he is a compulsive liar. But just because you're right doesn't mean you have to be a dick about it. Because the people who believe you aren't right are going to shut the door right in your face and never listen to what you have to say ever again. And remember, those people are entitled to the exact same amount of power at the voting booths as you are, no matter what. In the case of America, there's roughly 74 million of them. We don't get this anymore: Not the most applicable example, but you get my point.

No...? Or at least I don't support the way ANTIFA advocates for anti-facism, but that doesn't make me supportive of facism. But please elaborate on your point. It's the end of a working day just before a long weekend, and I've been reading through legislation all day for work, so my cooked out brain doesn't quite understand what you're getting at

Some people who voted for Trump genuinely did not believe he was a racist. A lot of his voters also staunchly believed they themselves were not racist. Regardless of whether the voters were fed misinformation or purely ignorant, it's not as black and white as you think it is. Calling people racists who seriously believe they're not racist isn't a healthy way of having a conversation and mending differences.

Another important number, but buried in the article: "only 544 people — or 0.1% — have been subsequently diagnosed with the coronavirus" Good to see. Let's hope we can get the vaccines here in Canada rolling soon cause it looks like the UK variant is starting to make its presence felt.
