  1. Who wouldn’t? Doesn’t mean it can fit the cap situation though. Pretty sure Coach Bruce also wanted more than a 1 option year contract. Unless the team super overachieves this year AND Boudreau coaches the way Rutherford and Allvin want him to, this time next year Yeo or Cull is head coach.
  2. Garland and a 1st isn’t getting you a top pairing rhd. Garland right now is essentially a cap dump (or at best a dollar in dollar out trade piece) under the current league wide environment. Horvat straight across likely isn’t either though with the way rhd are valued. Top prospect sure Horvat would probably bring one back. But not an existing top pairing rhd. Horvat is not really a shutdown center. He is actually not all that good defensively if you really look at it objectively. He is better offensively than defensively actually which is why trading him would almost certainly be considered. Maybe it’s not likely but there is a difference between possibility and probability. People saying there is no chance the Canucks would ever trade him are just not realistic. There is always a chance if his ask gets too high. Or if some other team offers a crazy return. Never say never.
  3. Weegar a couple of months ago. But pretty sure I said top rhd prospect not top pairing rhd.
  4. With Miller off the block, Horvat is probably the only tradeable player that could reasonably expect to return a top D prospect. Not saying he would or not. I have long said that rhd should have been a significant draft focus of the Canucks for years. They are the hardest position to get impact players at really.
  5. Probably. But it’s not 100% assured imo. People here are far too attached to him imo. I don’t necessarily think he is the sure thing Canucks lifer many suggest he is.
  6. With the Miller extension, the potential for Horvat to be traded certainly at least needs to part of the conversation.
  7. That’s exactly right. Quick and accurate transitions allow the forwards to attack with speed and push back defenders. This means less dump and chase and more opportunity to control the puck throughout zone entry. I see that as critical to making the most of our offensive players.
  8. Ya Dipietro likely has little actual value tbh. He really probably only has value as an optics add in like you suggest. Unfortunately for us due to bungling his development.
  9. A big part of our zone exit issues the past few years is the forwards imo. How many times do we see a dman looking for a long outlet only to double pump or have to lift it out of the zone because the forwards are either stationary or not in position for a quick up? That 5 man fluid defensive system needs to change and I think its a big reason they went big after a guy like IM from Toronto.
  10. Horvat is is underrated somewhat offensively and had been miscast for years as a shutdown guy (he is significantly overrated defensively). If he can improve his offensive consistency and continue to be a big moment clutch guy, it’s almost an embarrassment of riches to have Miller, Horvat, EP at center. Having said that, the style that works with the type of roster we have is puck possession, pure and simple. This team needs to be much better at zone exits and much better at entering the offensive zone with speed and puck control to be successful consistently. We don’t have the typical shutdown center type at this point.
  11. I think this is very under-represented as a justification for these types of deals by Ottawa.
  12. I think a lot of people don’t really want to see the actual truth. Neither Miller or Horvat are particularly good defensive players. Their ability to win faceoffs is essentially a huge part of the defensive effectiveness they do have. Horvat, likely due to the fact he has been the only real matchup option during most of his tenure in Van, is significantly overrated defensively by a lot in the fan base. He is not Kesler-lite or even close. Neither is Miller on the defensive side. It’s very possible that very soon the best defensive center on this roster is EP. If he can improve his faceoffs of course.
  13. If they fit a clear need and are the best available for then for sure diversity is good. Just for the sake of it though? No I don’t think I would want the Canucks to operate that way. Unfortunately Bear is not really the answer to any need on the Canucks currently. He is a 3rd pairing type guy and we have enough of those already.
  14. It was important to have this dealt with before the season started either way. Not a great deal or a poor one really. Just market value UFA dollars and term.
  15. Ya for rental prices which are likely lower than teams that who want to re-sign him would pay. Last trade deadline was his max trade value. It only decreases as time goes on here. Contract talks being cut off is a huge blow to the Canucks bargaining position and will negatively impact their position significantly from its already weak state.
  16. I didn’t say they had to limit themselves. I said focus on the ones that he wants to re-sign with to try to squeeze max trade value.
  17. If Miller’s agent is saying he might completely cut off contract talks once the season starts, the Canucks need to resolve the Miller issue before then. Keeping him until the deadline then moving him only causes a huge distraction circus all season long. Not to mention increases the risk. He gets injured they get nothing. Or they make a stupid mistake and keep him as an “own rental” then let him walk for nothing. Which I fully expect is what is going to happen. Ask Miller to tell you every team he would consider re-signing with then deal with those teams as a priority. Miller is not signing with Van for a discount no matter what so giving him permission to discuss a contract extension with potential trade partners has no downside especially now that the Canucks have essentially zero leverage anyway.
  18. To be honest I think Rodriguez would be a good fit in terms of team need but only if a contract or two are moved out. I am not sure Miller is going to be moved at least not before the season starts. I know RD are hard to find but somethings got to give. I really think the best option might be to put OEL on the right side with Hughes in camp to see if that might be a top pairing that could work for now.
  19. Don’t we regularly make fun of other teams who keep adding forwards when their D is the real problem?
  20. Or, you could look at it that if they know for certain which teams he will re-sign with and those teams know he will they could focus on extracting max trade value from one of those teams rather than wasting time on teams that will only be paying one year rental prices. If Miller is not traded or signed before the season my bet is he walks as a UFA next offseason for nothing. No chance the Canucks will trade him if they are even close to a playoff position (same as every other year with every other pending UFA really. Of course the loser point pretty much guarantees almost every team has a chance at the playoffs at the tdl.)
