I could stomach  9oa for Reinhardt because he fits our needs and age profile but wtf is JB's obsession that is the old/slow/overpaid declining asset known as OEL?

I pray to whatever hockey gods that are listening that JB nixed OEL NTC when the transaction occurred.

Just look at the trade like 9OA for Garland instead of Reinhardt.

Then it's a 2nd and 7th  and a tonne of cap space for OEL at $7M cap hit

OEL is basically a 7M defenceman now on our team. Not so bad when you think about it.

At this point in time he is the best defender in a Canuck uniform, getting paid only 1M of cap space beyond Schmidt, Meyers and Edler’s old contract.

This trade is pretty awesome, especially with the addition of Garland while dumping LE, Rousell and Beagle (that’s about 12M in dead weight Cap space). Beagle was the only one that could play still but way over paid for a 4th liner.

Hopefully JB can get even more “aggressive” by getting some picks for Holtby and Schmidt.

Turn Schmidt into Zadorov and 11OA somehow

macewen missed his shot in van. green literally laughed aloud when asked by media about playing macewen at centre at a time when almost all of the team's centres were hurt ... he has no trust in the guy.

I'd like to see Graovac return at 4C.  Big body with speed.

I might be in the minority here, but I LOVE this deal.  Garland is one of the more underrated players in the league and should fit in well on that 2nd line.

I know people give OEL a hard time but he’s not nearly as bad as people make him out to be.  He still has a lot of game left and should give the Canucks two solid pairing options even if we end up moving Schmidt.

More importantly however, the Canucks move all of their dead cap off the books.

    Miller-Pettersson-Boeser

    Garland-Horvat-Podkolzin

    Hoglander-Dickinson-Virtanen

    Motte-Graovich-Highmore

    OEL-Schmidt
    Hughes-Hamonic

    Juolevi-Myers

    Demko

    Holtby

    Pearson ?

Yeah that contract is awful.  Really really not happy we didn't just wait one year instead of wasting our first and taking OEL 's abomination of a contract.

if there's retention i'm happy... if there's not then i hope OELs contract is buyout friendly in it's last couple years

Ahead of the 2019/20 season Brisebois traded Callahan's 5.8M LTIR contract for Condon's buried cap hit of 1.325M (total cap 2.4M).  Condon spent the season in the AHL/ECHL and was never recalled.  Brisebois himself explained his reasons for not wanting an LTIR contract.  It was better for them to have a buried cap hit on their books of over 1.3M than have Callahan's LTIR relief.

Beat writer Smith has Cernak on their untouchable list in his article of today.  They have players with trade interest - Killorn, Palat are players they probably could move for cap space.  They are likely 1st going to try with Johnson.

Fair enough...  i suggested that after hearing that TB was looking to acquire LTIR contracts for the cap relief... but can't remember the source (Hockeybuzz?)

Larsson and Oleksiak were the key guys I wanted JB to target in free agency. That ship has sailed so perhaps its a good time to restock the cupboards with young D?

Couple of easy trades would be:

    To VAN: Foote + Johnson

    To TBL: Nothin'

Tampa really need to clear cap, so we take on a good 3C for next 3 seasons plus a big young RHD in Foote.

I suggested  Johnson and Cernak   for a Ferlands LTIR relief and something else i can't remember now.

Lots of cap relief incentive for TB there.

I think one major difference is that Dickinson is 26.  His offensive production doesn't pop but it's not non existent.  I don't expect Dickinson to have a large bump in offensive production but he could still be a 15G 15A type defensive forward to plays very difficult minutes and could do it much better than what Sutter or Beagle can do at this point of their careers.  Of course depends on linemates too which is why it's important for the Canucks to still make some acquisitions which help put more skill further down the lineup.

if his wingers are Motte and Highmore/Podz then it'll be a fun line to watch

  12. What about Johnson from TB for 3C ?

If JB really has a deal to move Schmidts cap hit,  why not use that room to get TB to trade us Cernak by taking on Johnson ?

He's still only 30 with just 3 years left.

TB really needs cap relief and are even looking to acquire LTIR contracts for more relief.   Taking TJ and sending Ferlands contract back in the deal as part of the return might be enough to pry Cernak from them.

Cernak and Johnsons combined cap hit isnt much more than Schmidts, yet we'd get a solid 3C and a good young RD added to the core.

That's a fair assessment for sure.  I'd also argue that his UFA signings were a function of being a bad team in a hockey market.  Not a lot of guys are willing to sign up for that.  They have gotten better in the last couple of years; Myers likely had higher offers on the open market.

With an owner that obviously didn't want a full rebuild to happen.  JBs early marching orders appeared to be to keep the team competitive, when it should have been about restocking the (extemely bare) cupboards.

What i don't get about the JB complaints is that people don't seem to take into account that  a) FA was pulling the strings  b) GMJB has gotten better every year

Yep, and the guys on Sportsnet radio were pumping Gardiner up hard too. It was insane. It was as if so many Canuck fans and those radio hosts had never seen him play before. He was so, so bad.

As for OEL, I’m sure Arizona is kicking themselves for not accepting the package that Benning offer last year because I’m sure it was a lot sweeter than anything being offered now. If we do get him, I’m cool with it but AZ would need to eat some of the cap. I just don’t see them doing that though with 6 years remaining on his contract.

That's a given.... anything Leafs related is treated with reverence while every decision/signing/asset we have is downplayed.   They're just lackies bumping up the brand.

John Garrett's lotto 649 nickname has to be one of the worst.   Hard to live that one down, I still hear guys call him that occasionally after all these years.

i prefer hearing lotto line to the mattress line years ago (doesn't get any more intimidating than that  <_< )
