LAK select Ty Nelson at #36. @Art Vandelay

I have no idea what this means. Per the tweet, the core = EP, QH, TD, and BH and there is a country-club atmosphere (heard that one before). So, is this 'poor' atmosphere caused by the core or in spite of the core?

Ref couldn't have had a clearer line of vision on that play.

I mostly paid attention to the pitch clock. Game flew by.

Please welcome @Down by the River as GM of the Detroit Red Wings.
My reaction to being hired:
Got lots of positive feedback about the quality of this league. Looking forward to taking over a young, highly skilled team. Our first order of business is to plan out contracts for our RFAs and players needing an ELC.
If you have an interest in any of our players, feel free to reach out, but I won't be making any immediate trades as I need to take some time getting to learn the league's rules/Fantrax and take stock of our salary cap planning.

@HI5 @Down by the River Haney vs Kambosos tonight, TSN @ 6pm.
This fight has turned into just as much of a trash talking / heated rivalry as Romero / Davis. Gonna be a high lvl fight.
Thanks for the heads up!

Bodyguards =/= Depp
Can't think of a situation where getting $&!# on (actually) in bed - involuntarily - wouldn't make you a victim. Can't think of a situation where getting punched out wouldn't make you a victim.
Victims can also be aggressors, but let's not water down what Amber Heard did - and she IS an abuser. Whether she was actually a victim is a question mark, considering the lack of evidence and the fact that she was caught lying so many times.
I'm not saying Depp is a saint. I'm just saying that it's wrong to think of Depp as pretending to be a victim.
Congrats on only reading one of the 30 tweets and then acting like you are arguing against something I said.

I admit getting caught up in the absurdity of the trial... but after stumbling across this thread on Twitter, my thoughts on Depp did a strong 180. There are about a dozen creepy/weird things he has done that challenged my view that he was a victim in all of this:
Maybe the grossest was letting his 15yr old daughter date and move in with a 23yr old.

I believe @Sludge and @lethunder are up for NYR with the sixth pick.

Was just listening to Brian Cox talk about this on Conan O'Brien's podcast. At one point, humanity spent more on pet grooming than on fusion technology. Awesome to see the breakthrough.

Brutal strike zone works out for the Jays. Chapman should have been walked, called strike. Hits a double on the next pitch and two runs score.

Haney/Kambosos shortly after. Two good tilts in a short amount of time
Lol, that sure worked out for him. Left cross followed by an uppercut from the rope.

Gaudreau's play along the boards was pathetic. Tried to blow the zone and might as well have just kept skating to Philadelphia.

Scott Walker was a head coach in junior hockey for 5 years. He was also the player development consultant for the Canucks for 2 years, working directly with our prospects. He was also the assistant coach of the Canadian Olympic team in South Korea in 2018.
You don't acquire those positions by being dumb and not knowing how to evaluate players. Scott Walker is old school. So are alot of other coaches in the NHL, namely Bruce Boudreau. Boudreau was the one who hired Walker in the first place, so obviously he thinks highly of him.
I'm not saying that analytics doesn't have a place in hockey or in sports, but alot of the so called analytic computer nerds who know nothing about hockey think analytics is the only thing that matters, which of course is not true.
Give me an example of someone who feels that way.
It seems like you and others just don't like analytics and want to misrepresent what it is so that you can call people nerds and call others old school to make yourself sound a certain way.
What you don't seem to understand, or choose to ignore, is that Scott Walker being a good coach without using analytics is not necessarily a good thing. Because maybe if he kept his same coaching style but also considered analytics he could eke out a little bit more success from his players that might be the difference in winning one more game per year. These are the details that matter. Nobody is saying you can't be a hard-nosed, motivating coach AND also consider analytics (except for you and some other people in this thread).

If analytics were everything they would not scout players in person to watch actual games played.... Always need the eye test to confirm the data, especially when you take into account that it is a team sport with 5 other players on the ice affecting your "data" both positively and negatively.
Who said they were?

Doesn’t every NHL team have an analytics department?
Scott Walker is a coach. He doesn’t watch the game from the press box. He’s behind the bench. I’m sure he would prefer to coach based on how he learned the game, which wasn’t from a computer.
There's this strawman logic out there that assumes the use of analytics precludes the use of coaching based on trying to develop skills, develop rapport with players, etc.
It isn't one or the other, and I've never heard an analytics person with any merit behind their name argue for as much.
Of the major professional sports in North America, hockey players have got to be the most poorly-educated athletes, and it doesn't surprise me that a lot of former players turned coaches are pig-headed about this. Ultimately, if you're competing at the highest level of anything, you should be using every advantage you have. Ignoring analytics simply because you don't like them (read: you don't understand them) is a sign to me of someone who has decided to put their ego ahead of winning.

To be honest, I see this as more Walker trying to piss on his territory. Analytics are dangerous to people who refuse to learn about them (just as they are dangerous to people who blindly follow them).
I think people don't like analytics because (a) it can take passion out of the sport if you're reducing a player to a number, (b) it makes debates about the sport less interesting (to some), (c) they are harder to learn than eye tests, and (d) the people who use analytics often poorly communicate their value to the public.
I'm not saying it is good that Scott Walker left, but I think there is probably someone out there who could replace him and do a better job. Why wouldn't you want a coach who is going to use the tools made available to him?
2 hours ago, Bissurnette said:“I was totally against analytics in hockey. I mean, show me an analytical team that’s won the Stanley Cup,” Walker said. “People would say our analytics weren’t great when we were in Vancouver, but we were winning games.”
Tampa Bay, the current back-to-back Stanley Cup champion, for one:

Does this mean TB relies purely on analytics? No. But that doesn't discount their importance, especially in a salary cap era where races are so tight.

Hot take: Robinson wasn’t THAT great of a baseball player, certainly not at the same level as a Trout, Prime Pujols, or even Prime Ichiro. So, Anderson comparing himself to Robinson isn’t out of the ordinary.
In matter of fact, if you compare Robinson’s first MVP season to Anderson’s last year stats, it’s pretty similar, aside from the RBIs and batting average. Although you have to factor in that hitting back in the 40s was way easier. Pitchers weren’t throwing 95+ mph heat and only had like 3 pitches in their arsenal. Anderson also played 25+ less games and had 60+ less at bats.
You can say there’s like 5+ Jackie Robinsons playing in today’s game.I don't think that people who are bothered by the comparison are bothered because of the quality of the player... I can run about as fast as Terry Fox, but I'm not going to compare myself to him either.

Listening to Dan and Tabby and I'm getting a bit tired of hearing "It's ok to swing at the first pitch".
I think it is ok to swing at the first pitch if you've actually been hitting the first pitch.
This year they are not hitting it, and they SUCK at hitting with risp.
1/4 through the season, 7 games behind the Yankees, 5 behind Tampa.
I think the team needs to do something that tells the player's the organization won't let a season slip away.
How many times is the first pitch out of the zone (don't know myself, genuinely curious). It feels like most of their Ks are coming from swinging at pitches that are away (especially down and away) and they're so off-balance they fall across the plate.
EDIT: Basically exactly what Springer just did.
