Report: Maple Leafs' Laurence Gilman in running for Canucks' GM vacancy
    https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/2245905

I'd be okay with Gilman as our GM.  He's a good communicator, open to new approaches.  Lots of experience in all areas of management except GM and knows the market very well.  He also knows how the Aqualinni's work.  So yah, I'm down.  Not my first choice in our poll but top three anyway!

I bet if an experienced NHL President or GM was available and Vancouver is looking then there would no doubt be interest. Its not a matter of meddling, every owner meddles, signs off on deals, decisions etc. The team came out yesterday and again tried to explain what happens in the chain of command and people keeping within their roles and yet people still think there is this big meddling issue among the Canucks owners.

The same media and " hockey community " that praised the owners when the team was winning and a model franchise in the NHL are running with this meddling too hands on narrative that simply just isn't as big a deal as some are making it out to be. Its tiring to hear this continue is all, so my simple " no " was in response to the idea you presented. No disrespect meant.

There is only 32 of these jobs around, there will be up and coming and experienced people vying for such a job or at the least considering it. Many variables including the pressure in Vancouver to consider but as a major city in North America, one of the better cities to work, live, play in is absolutely an attractive option. Couple that with the team in place its desirable.

Okay... Well thought out response, with a credible theory... Thanks for that.  You are probably right... Even if you aren't, there is nothing we can do about it anyway and there's no point in whining about it...  But to go with the same theme.  Why if it hasn't gotten them to the top and won them a cup, do they continue to hire newbies to the most important position in their organization?

My point overall is... Do something different this time and not repeat the same mistakes again and I'll continue to believe these owners can bring us the cup.  So far so good.... Boudreau IS a very experienced coach.  Hopefully more experienced GM or POHO hired this time around.

  3. Just another interesting thought... Why since the aquallini family took over full ownership of this team, we haven't had one, not one previously experienced GM or POHO hired!?  I'm wondering if this ISN'T because Frank and fam want new blood running their team as much as, no GM with experience wants to work for an ownership group that likes to be more 'hand on' in the day to day.  Not enough anonymity maybe?

I seem to recall that Gillis had a pretty difficult time making trades as well, which I think was attributed to his days as an agent dealing with GMs. With turnover in the league it would probably be easier these days, but it's still worth noting.

Absolutely, I remember the same... And another reason he hasn't gotten a job since.  He was great at getting the right pieces to complement the core through FA signings.  But from within his circle of peers, he was never one of them.

I'm actually really surprised how we have a number of fans that want him back.

I didn't say he was responsible with the picks.  I just said that he didn't mortgage the future by trading picks and prospects.

We all know he sucked at drafting, but he was quite good at asset management.

Gillis was great at identifying the players needed to compliment the core.  But the drafting and Gilmans ntc contracts are what we're their undoing.  I don't want Gillis back as GM.  Gilman though, I'm all for.  He's stuck as a executive in the NHL ever since leaving van.  I'm sure he's learned even more along the way.  I'd be happy if he was hired first as a PoHO and let him hire his GM...  If that leads to gillis being rehired as GM... Then I guess I'd have to trust Gilmans knowledge and choice to do so.

In comparison, these are the highlights of Travis Green's first game as head coach of the Canucks:

Really interesting to watch this old footage.  You can recognize greens system right away.  Stay back, and then counter attack with numbers from a turnover... You have to execute your job to perfection in order to have the system work...  But you have to have the right players to use this type of system effectively.  Back then, you had most of the players needed to be somewhat successful with this system... But green didn't adapt his system to accommodate the style of play the new players were bringing.  Even then, they were a .500 team.  Even then, they were routinely being out shot, night after night.  It was a novelty if they outshot their opponent.

Petey, Höglander, Hughes etc... Almost all the younger players on this team have never had a coach that teaches a system that complement their skill sets.  Not that learning greens system for fundamentals was a bad thing, but as we saw, ultimately, his system stifled most of these young skilled players development and as a result, confidence.

I'm very, happy for the younger guys... To get another more offensively minded, not so ridged coach to help them regain their confidence and help them to continue their development, so they can realize their full potential.... Going to be fun to watch!

    Montreal

    And from the hockey news:

    https://thehockeynews.com/news/heres-a-list-of-significant-hockey-riots-in-canada

    "

Here's a list of significant hockey riots in Canada:

2011: Furious fans run riot in Vancouver after the Canucks lose the Stanley Cup final to the Boston Bruins. Cars and garbage cans were set ablaze, beer bottles were thrown at outdoor viewing screens and broken glass littered the streets.

2010: Looters smashed windows and clashed with police on Montreal's Ste-Catherine St. after the Canadiens defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in the final game of the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. At least 25 people were arrested.

2008: Cars were burned and downtown stores were trashed after the Canadiens beat the Boston Bruins to advance to the second round that season's playoffs.

2006: When the Edmonton Oilers clinched the Western Conference title and advanced to the Stanley Cup playoffs, fans began setting fires and looting along Whyte Ave. Police made about 15 arrests and reprimanded hockey lovers for partying irresponsibly. The Oilers went on to lose the final.

1994: Fans disappointed by the Vancouver Canucks Stanley Cup final loss to the New York Rangers flooded downtown streets after the deciding match, smashing windows and causing more than a million dollars in damage. Both city police and the RCMP were called in to subdue the crowd believed to number at least 50,000. More than 200 people were injured, the most serious being a teenager who was shot in the head by police with a rubber bullet and suffered permanent brain damage.

1993: Montreal's Stanley Cup victory over the Los Angeles Kings turned ugly when fans began vandalizing stores and setting police cars ablaze. Nearly 170 people were injured and more than 100 were arrested. The violence caused an estimated $2.5 million in damage.

1986 - Some 5,000 jubilant Montreal fans celebrating the Canadiens' Stanely Cup win over the Calgary Flames rampaged through the city's downtown. Officials were so poorly prepared that Quebec courts ruled police criminally negligent.

1955: Violence broke out in the streets of Montreal after star forward Maurice Richard was handed a stiff suspension. Richard broke his stick over a Boston Bruins player and hit a linesmen, causing the NHL to suspend him for all remaining games including potential playoff matches. Habs fans rioted in protest of the ruling, which many interpreted as a prejudicial decision based in part on Richard's francophone heritage. There were roughly 100 arrests and $100,000 worth of property damage during the riot.

^ Just hockey related riots, left out the other sports.

    Montreal... Dang!!!! Lol!

Weisbrod always came across as a bit of a snake in the grass to me.  Was never sold on Weisbrod.

But man - I'm just listening to the Bruce boudreau introductory press conference right now and man!...........what a breath of fresh air.   So personable and forthcoming.  I'm getting a really good feeling about this guy.

I don't think I heard any of us here on CDC say "wow!  We got weisbrod!"  I think we all were... "Oh, great... Wasn't he part of the disaster created in Calgary?"  "Oh well, JB's got a cup... Must know what he's doing".

Well... Guess our misgivings unfortunately were correct.  So glad that guy is gone... More than anyone.

Life is full of risks.  Just crossing the street.  Its about weighing risks.

I don't get vaccine hesitation.  If you still believe in science at this point, specifically medical science, and almost 100% of that community is assuring the public that its safe, and approved by the FCC, and debunks the claims by antivaxers, Like it altering your DNA.  So what is the problem?

Among those findings, the risk of contracting the disease is 50% higher, then after that, the risk of hospitalization is 50x higher if you are unvaxed. And then once in hospital, you are 11 - 15x more likely to DIE.

To me that seems like the much bigger risk would be NOT getting vaccinated and following the advice of some internet doctors and political talk show hosts wanting to stir up controversy. Its just common sense.

This is a good list of the main debunked claims about DNA and side effects, and risks.  From John Hopkins University, including one you raised, in that this vaccine is not new. the mrna technology has been being developed for almost 20 years now.

    https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccines-myth-versus-fact

What gets me is how powerful social media and its a-holes are these days.   If you've got the gift of the gab, and are fine with making #$%@ up for money, and scaring a lot of people at once, this is the golden age. Those are the people I am most pssed with. You've taken vaccines before, all your life.  But some quack on the You Tubes says all the doctors and scientists in the world are wrong and he is right.  If you want to risk not only your own health, but those close to you, by deciding that the risk of listening to actual doctors is riskier than some internet "experts", then I don't know what to say.  I actually feel kind of sorry for those folks, including my sister and brother in law who share your unfounded beliefs.

The real truth is... There is credible science on both sides for getting vacc'd and not vacc'd.  But there is also false information from both sides as well.  It all comes down to where do you source the information.  What source do you trust, because both sides paint a pretty compelling story with 'facts' and 'science' backing their narrative.  So in the end, people are going to choose a side and call the other side a bunch of sheep or quacks or conspiracy theorists or sell outs etc... And most of us take no time to look at the other sides perspective without contempt or truly looking without prejudice...

I think we can all agree the truth is, we are more divided than together as a society now compared to pre-covid.  It has brought together believers with believers and non-believers with non.  And a wide expanse between us.  Sad but true and I don't think it will end anytime soon.....

Enough of that, let's get back to talking canucks because this is depressing lol!

I can see keeping him out if they want to trade him, but what does "want him in the AHL for waiver reasons" mean. I don't understand what waivers have to do with trades.

I was kinda talking out of my a*#!  But was referring to the idea of hamonic being traded to a team that would want the option of stashing him the the ahl without having to go through waivers... But, I don't think I have that right.  Really, I probably shouldn't even speculate because it hurts my head trying to make any sense of this hamonic saga so far this season.

I did some more digging, The last game Hamonic played was with Vancouver on November 21st. Keep in mind that it was only his seventh game of the season. He didn't show up in the lineup until November 2nd. I found that in addition to not dressing for Abbotsford on November 30th and December 2nd, he did not dress November 27th. He played exactly one game in Abbotsford, before November started, and recorded one assist.

So, to sum up: Hamonic missed the first 14 games of the NHL season and started in Vancouver after playing one game in the AHL. He played seven home games in November and was sent to Abbotsford around November 22nd, when the NHL team was on a US road trip. He did not dress for any of

Abbotsford's three home games since November 27th. He was not recalled when the team returned to Canada for games in Montreal and Ottawa. Friday morning Hamonic was recalled from Abbotsford, but by late afternoon, he was sent back. Is it lack of game fitness, or is it indifference to the reasonable expectations of an NHL team?

Or are the canucks finalizing a trade and want him in the ahl for waiver reasons?hmmm GIF

Big Buff and him didn't get along from the start. They were in Atlanta together then moved to Winnipeg. Kane was definitely a young puke back then. But Buff isn't exactly a model citizen either. His drinking, not reporting to the team, the whole injury thing. Even throwing a guys clothes (Kanes) into the shower isn't exactly a mature thing to do when you are supposed to be a leader in the dressing room. They did not like eachother.

I do however look beyond that and obviously still see the trouble. His time in Buffalo, and the assault charges. They were dropped and buried. Who knows what happened there.

Comes to San Jose and continues his bad ways. The gambling debt issue in 2019, then bankruptcy, then his issues with his ex and more assault charges, then faking a vax card and submitting it to the NHL...just wow. Every year something new with this guy.

I very much doubt he will change.

But i've seen some hard ass guys turn their lives around after having their first child...it can be a big change in a positive way for a man.

Having his family around to help him learn and change his ways, and help his raise his kid will be huge in how he transforms himself beyond all the crap mentioned above.

For his and his families sake (gotta think mom and dad want their son to change too) I hope if he does come to Vancouver he buckles down and shows us all that he can become a better man and learn from all this childish crap...but wow, the track record shows he's a slow learner...and if he does start acting up even the slightest bit management better be ready to buy his sorry ass out because this fan base will never forgive this move if it doesn't go any way but positive. This is a very risky move if they do decide to do it.

    +1

This one is much more complicated for sure.  The article just from a couple days ago about the court proceedings sure make things look a lot more favourable for Kane.
An NHL player who has to be on the road half the time getting custody of his kid and the mother (his accuser) ordered for psychiatric evaluation does a lot to tip the balance.

That is all aside from the rest of his ridiculous behaviour though.  We can all hope for a redemption story where he comes and lives near his family/support network who can help him raise his child and keep him on the straight and narrow…. And we get a player who is exactly what we need on the ice for pennies on the dollar.

I am not a Pollyanna though and know that isn’t the likeliest of outcomes.  If we trade for him, it has to have enough upside to take on the risk.  Him agreeing to be vaccinated so he could travel would be a good start to believing he is trying to mature and realizes how close his career is to slipping away.

To me, it would still take a middle team to bring his cap hit even lower than 50% to want us to take on that risk.

San Jose retains 50% and sends a sweetener for a middle team to retain some as well, who then flips him to us for a small return from us and we get Kane for an AAV of $1.5-2 million.  We send out a lower end roster player and a middling prospect.

That gives enough upside to be worth it to me.  We also have to consider the risk is mitigated by the fact we could terminate Kane’s contract o it right if he REALLY misbehaves.  The risk is is he only kind of misbehaves, but not enough to get suspended or terminated and is a pain in the locker room.  Even then, with us paying such little freight on him just waiving him to save most of the cap and having him sit at home isn’t disastrous.

Well said... I agree with all your thoughts.  Odds are stacked against him figuring it out before losing his career because he obviously has a lot of growing up to do.  However, due to his family being local, playing for an NHL team or not.  He'll be coming home to get the support needs to keep his daughter with him.  So playing for the canucks seems like the most likely outcome... IF there are any suitors to begin with.... Might already be to late?  One way or another, we'll find out soon enough..
