I remember when people were saying that Edmonton got so lucky that he dropped to them at 4.

I honestly never saw the upside that some saw. He always seemed to somehow be very noticeable but also accomplish nothing at the same time.

Count me as someone who doesn’t wanna see us use a high pick on a Finn. Puljujarvi and Laine from the same draft is looking pretty bad now.

It appears that it was mostly Aho running that line (Juolevi included).

    David Jiricek

    RHD

"Skating is the name of the game. He flows a fluid extension into a clean recovery to impart power and precision to his four-way ability" EPRinkside.com 2021
"He can walk the line and get a shot through traffic, or load up an absolute bomb of a one-timer" EPRinkside.com 2021
"extremely active defenseman.. doesn’t hesitate when he can activate from the offensive blue line to become a threat from the high slot" Draftin Europe 2020

"He’s the textbook definition of a two-way defenseman and really doesn’t have too many holes in his game. Offensively, he’s extremely skilled when it comes to patrolling the blue line, be it at even strength or on the power play. He’s one of the most explosive skaters among defensemen, and while his acceleration needs some work, he’s a hard player to slow down when you factor in his size. His edgework is very good and he also possesses what I believe might be one of the best shots among defensemen in the 2022 draft class. Whether it’s a booming one-timer or a deceptive wrist shot, Jiricek’s point shots typically end up in the back of the net before you can blink. Defensively, he has elite gap control when it comes to boxing out incoming opponents. He’s incredibly hard to shake off when he’s chasing the puck carrier, and he uses his frame at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds to his advantage. While he’s not a Scott Stevens clone on the back end, he’s certainly not known to shy away from laying a big hit every now and then. Watching him play, I see similarities between Jiricek and Detroit Red Wings star rookie Moritz Seider. Both are right-handed defensemen at roughly the same height and weight, and both can impact the game in just about any aspect." - Hockey Writers

“Mobile defender with good size and a bomb of a shot from the point. Plays a physical brand of hockey and has the potential to contribute in a variety of ways as an NHL defenseman.” -Nick Richard, Dobber Prospects

“Jiříček has good puck tracking ability. He does an excellent job scanning the ice and moving his body around the offensive zone at the same pace as his opponents’ puck movement. The Czech defender reacts quickly to puck movement, if he spots a loose puck coming up the boards towards him, he shifts his hips and knees in a pivot to trap possession of the puck.” -Josh Tessler, Smaht Scouting

“Jiricek is an exceptional two-way defender that shows a strong transition ability. He reads the play so well, playing like a veteran defender well above his age. He regularly shows very impressive reads, noting where players are and correctly attacking or hanging back as needed.” -Josh Bell, FC Hockey

We need to trade up to 5 (PHI) to get this guy...wouldn't Moritz Seider look real good lined up with Quinn? Well, this is the same type guy...we NEED this type of RHD so that our future for the next decade is secure on the backend.

I agree... But do you think he'd be available at 5?  In a redraft, Seider would go top 3 now.  I'd could see the same with Jiricek.

  3. Excellent proposal!!!  Best one I've seen... I'm hoping that the nucks management goes with at least one guaranteed sure fire top 4 d or top 6 forward fir Miller.  This way, the team doesn't necessarily take a step back in order to go forward long term.  The Boston trade looks best for that but the Carolina trade is a close second.  The L.A. and Washington trades have the most boom or bust potential.  As others have mentioned, the Rangers trade would be the only one I'd be disappointed with.  Thanks again bc Nate!

If the Nucks could swing this trade package, I would be ecstatic.  I also love the trade for Crouse!

The Kings have several RFA signings, including Durzi and Kempe, which could be quite pricey.  I'm

not sure that they want to sign a +8M contract for a C/LW when they have an abundance in that role.

What they really need is a top 6RW.  Unfortunately the Canucks RWs are not as valuable as JT, so

they wouldn't garner an even close return in a trade.

Boeser maybe?  Less return but still as you and others have said.  L.A. have an abundance of pieces that would compliment our roster.  A number of different scenarios could work.  Höglander or Pearson as part of the package may work as well.

OK..........you guys might through me under the bus on this one.........but hear me out

    Miller and Rathbone (LHD)

    for

Roy, 2022-1st (19th), Fagemo, and Faber (RHD)

So, let's look at the guts of this deal and rationalize it for a minute..............................

Miller......yes he is a 100 point player and yes he is the best player in the trade for now, but there is a growing opinion that his return may not be what we like, in terms of value. How I see this trade, as I see all trade, is that it is Miller's return, plus any cap saved, which then can be flipped for a UFA down the road. Now, you have to look at Miller's cap as his greater Cap, which will be in the $8,000,000 range. that is a big hit on a team that is still rebuilding.

Rathbone......My favorite prospect. Someone I do not want to loose, but IMO, this is the time to move him, as including him in this trade allows us to basically do a horizontal trade within a trade, in that, although Rathbone is a solid prospect, Faber is ranked 10 spots higher in most, "players not in the NHL". Coupling that is that it gives us a bonafide RHD prospect in Faber.

Roy.........Roy is a perfect fit for Quinn Hughes, and protects him defensively. Roy's cap hit is $3,150,000 for the next 2 years, which gives us a huge cap savings, short term. If we are building for when Horvat is still here, than Roy fits that age at 27 years old. Roy is the #2 RHD in LA, stuck behind Doughty, and soon to graduate Drysdale, not to mention Durzi, Spence and Grans.

So, Roy is expendable and so is Faber, if you look at the great context of LA's players.

Faber....as explained in the Roy comments, is a great prospects that is ranked ahead of Rathbone and is 4 years younger. Faber will certainly be a great add, and will graduate next off season. If our goal is to add prospects that fit our timeline, IMO, Faber does this.

Fagemo.......this guy is a sleeper, IMO, and had a great 1st year in the AHL. Fagemo won the U20 scoring championship, the year Hoglander was suspended in the last game. Fagemo was Hoglander's linemate. I see this as a sneaky add.

2022-1st (19th OA).....I think there will be some great prospects, in that area, and may even get a faller, that surprises everyone. JR wants to refill the prospect cabinet, I think this helps. It might also be possible for JR to trade down and get a later 1st and an late 2nd/early 3rd, like what was  done in the Schneider deal in NYR. watch JR do this to recover some lost picks or send the 2022-1st + Poolman to Arizona for Crouse ?

I am betting right now, that you think we will get more, I am betting we get less, and for the most part this is a futures type deal.

Without doing a deep dive into the prospects you mention as potential gets from L.A.... Your argument is compelling.  At first glance, I'd say this would be a good trade for both sides.... Maybe a little better deal for van?  However, why I could see L.A. as being a good trading partner is the fact that they are transiting out if their 30+ year old guys to the under 24 year old guys... But there is this year or two gap between the transition....AND I think L.A. wants to start winning now. (Doughty and Kopitar want one last good run). They can do that, especially with JT centering their 1st or 2nd line.  As you mentioned, L.A. has an abundance of prospects they can use as trading chip and still keep their best ones for themselves.   Good proposal!

Well composed response - cheers !  As for the comment: I had been a Canucks fan for years and I had been closely following every draft for most of the teams history.  For various reason(s) and ever so often, Delormes' name would come up, which makes sense cause he has been a scout or has been a part of that department since 1986.  Can we atleast agree, that for most of the Canucks history, there drafting record hasn't been that great (ofcourse, there are PROBABLY, other teams that has a worse drafting record or not but I am not concerned about those teams) ? As for Smyl, just like Delorme he was first a player for the Canucks, with Smyl having more of a pedigree; but he hasn't really been a big part of the scouting department.  Instead it was in the players development department, is where he was mostly involved in since 2004, whilst, before that (after his retirement in 1991) he held various coaching positions within the Canucks organization or in various places in minor leagues.  Whatever, the reasons for keeping both, is really unknown but Delorme has outlasted a lot of people in that department; and I am really hoping that they can do better job in drafting & development, during the Allvin era cause Abby is just down the road and it would be a lot of fun to see a lot more homegrown talents in Abby & Vancouver.

Appreciate you taking the time to explanation some of your perspective and feelings on Delorme.  Can't agree with you more on hoping Allvin and co can improve our drafting.  So far I am happy with the additions to the development team.  I don't recall a time in this franchise's history that has made this many substantial changes across the management front.  Changing the stale, outdated foundation and framework this team has been operating under during my time as a fan.  It's encouraging.  I'm cautiously optimistic...

The tiresome virtue signaling type reply: no facts just a bunch of blah blah - I am smarter than you shaming type reply.   Believe what you want to believe, have a good life and calm down...

No intent on shaming... There are enough people here and around the world that are handing that out all too much these days... So no that was not my intent.  I was curious as to why you felt the need to single out Delorme not say... Smyl for example.  Two ex canucks and a longtime in management.  Yet we do not question or ask how Smyl has kept his job all these years.  You are simply rehashing an old tired narrative that holds no water. You have shared no facts either...

The only thought I had, as to why certain fans question Delorme's role with the club is, the narrative that he is the last 'weak link' or common denominator left to our somewhat patchy drafting history?  Or?  Anyway... Sad that you are so reactive to a simple question.  All the best.

Calm down; and are you related to him ?  Perhaps, do your own research, find out and chime in later

Lol!  Calm down you say... Pot calling kettle black hey?

I have done my research... Hence the questions to you.  Maybe I should ask where you got your info.  All I can say is... you're not talking out of your mouth.

Teflon Delorme is still with the team - not sure, if he is ever good at his job but he surely has outlasted a lot of people.

Obviously, he's been there through 4 management changes... He must have some ability.  Why are you questioning this?  Has he shown incompetence to you?  I find it curious that there are a number of fans on here that like to bring the fact that he as been there as long as he has.

Gaudreau's play along the boards was pathetic. Tried to blow the zone and might as well have just kept skating to Philadelphia.

Leading to McdDavids winning goal, Johnnny curls away from Draisaitl in the corner... Doesn't even try to engage.  Uncontested, Leon passes to Connor... Series over. That's why the fLames will never win with their main guys showing no heart....

    ....Hope they re-sign him!!!  Lol

So, the other series will probably be CGY-EDM?  Should be a doozy.

    Crystal ball?

You're probably right but I wouldn't count out either L.A. or Dallas with all their vet experience.  Game 7's always come down to the better goaltender wins.  Quick vs Smith.... Marky vs Oettinger.

I predict, Calgary vs L.A.... But like you pointed out, Soilers vs fLames would be a great series... Maybe the best of this years playoffs!

This series... Not sure... Either Avs in 6 or Blues in 7.

A few weeks back there was a lot of discussions of should have, would have, could have taken better players at the draft ( Caufield, Zegres, Boldy) was mentioned...

I think its fair to say that Podz just rose the bar...

The boy is 20 and built like a brick $&!# house... hits anything that moves, makes plays and scores... I know, who my money will be on come play off time...

    Damn good pick by Benning.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  I think these other guys that were drafted around him are very good players that will leave their mark as well but... Podz has the character and physical tools to be the best of the bunch all around player that plays an integral part in winning championships.  Exciting times!!!

I like Matthew Boldy in Minny. I wish we could have selected and chosen him. But that would mean we wouldn’t have Podkolzin.

But Boldy has 29 points in 36 games, while Podkolzin has 19 points in 70 games. I think Podkolzin will be a decent player, he’s not going to be an offensive juggernaut, though.

I agree... Producing points... Well goals anyway, won't be what he'll be about... However, I bet he'll be known for scoring timely, clutch goals in a couple years.  But no, he won't be a Boldy... I really wanted him as well.  Ultimately though... I still believe Podz will end up being a better overall player than any of the guys picked after him in the draft... It will show in his +/- and how he'll elevate players around him.  He will make or 'will' the canucks into becoming 'hard to play against' again.

Boeser was drafted as a goal scoring winger and JEE as an all-around type of C.  Not sure that comparison is relevant to make here.  It's better to compare Boeser to Connor, DeBrusk, etc. since they're relied on to produce offensively.

As for Podkolzin, where do you get this notion that he's on track to becoming some elite defensive winger?  I think he could become responsible defensively, but I wouldn't say that he has an elite level of defensive skill in his locker.  In any event, being to tough to play against =/= being elite defensively.  J.T. Miller is tough to play against, but hasn't got the first clue about defensive responsibility.  By this fact, Zegras/Caufielder/Boldy/etc are all tough to play against.

AV... He just started this year... Now just starting to come into his own.  Listen to Horvat, Miller, Chaisson talk about Podz... He will be like a Bergeron soon enough.... Maybe with a little less offence but really, neither if us know where he will be in the next couple years.  I just think your basing everything on the now and not looking at how he is trending.  His work ethic, attitude, smarts, will, and drive already are at pro level according to Miller, and Horvat.  I'll take Podz over any of the guys you mentioned (including Zegras) hands down... The only guy I'd hesitate on is Boldy.  A year from now... I'll bring this conversation back.... Might be wishful thinking coming from you, but hope you're willing to eat some crow.  april fools prank GIF

    Hey AV... Where you goin'?

Unless Podkolzin walks into good linemates or somehow becomes a world-beater overnight, he's maybe a 35-45 pt forward when all is said and done.  Not a bust, but hardly a legitimate top 6 forward.

Boldy is clear of Podkolzin as it stands.  And Zegras...well that guy is galaxies better than what Podkolzin is showing.  Caufield also much better.  I'm probably forgetting some other names.

Canucks fans have once again tricked themselves into thinking that their prospect is some special, unearthed talent, or a "steal".  It happens all the time.  The reality is, these players are good but are simply standard across the league.

Boeser was miles better than Player Name Ek the first 2-3 years in the league.  Who'd you rather have now?  There were a lot of good forwards within the top 20 in the 19' draft.  Newhooks looking great... Krebes as well.  These guys including Caulfield and Boldy (whom by the way, in my book, was neck and neck my favorite with Podz) are all very well may  produce more than podz (If they stay healthy... Podz is also super durable)... But not one of these guys will be as tough to play against, or as defensively elite.  Podz will be out in all situations were as a number of these guys will be put out in more offensive rolls only.  I don't need to bash any of these players to point out that podz will be an integral part of this core very soon.  A player that you need to win a Stanley Cup with.  By the end of next season... Let's pose this question again and see how you feel.
