Well this puts my draft stress at ease a bit. Zegras is the player I want at #10 badly. Has star quality and reminds me of Barzal. Don’t think he lasts till 10 though unless teams don’t see him as a centre in the bigs. His creativity is off the charts.

I'm coming around on Zegras.... The more I read and watch.  As you mentioned, his CREATIVITY is off the charts.  Much like Pettersson, Barzel and Marner... That's an x-factor that we can't pass up if available at 10.  Imagine having two elite IQ creative playmakers that can score, skate and see the ice so well.  Compliment them with north south high effort, gritty character forwards in Bo, Adam, Tanner, Jay and Jake (?) and you have a well balanced forward group that can contend for the cup very soon.

Other than the second tier D men, it feels like it may come down to:

    Podkolzin

    Caufield

    Krebs

They each have their pros and cons but if those were the options who do you take?  To me I’d be willing to take the risk and go Podkolzin.

I go defence at #10 UNLESS Boldy or Podkolzin are available... in that order.  Otherwise, Broberg, but I would be quite happy with Krebs as well.  Cool thing is we'll have a shot at atlest two of these guys.

Wow. Cheveldayoff working his magic again. Way below market value and after a season he posted great numbers.

Good signing yes... But only one 'show me' year.  A fair signing for sure (wouldn't call it a home run signing though).  If he has another solid year and starts taking starts from Hellebuyck then you can bet his next contract will be more term and money.  And a good but hard choice to make for the Jets as to who they want starting going forward.

Well, without the "gaziollionnaires", we would not have the high standard of living we have today.   Those people made a lot of money but has bettered the "common" people if you look at it through the lens of human history.   Before the industrialization people lived in either small villages or squalid cities.   Life was hard and short.   Then came the industrial revolution.   With it came the invention of the steam engine, then railroads, then electrification, with advances in communication like telegraph.   These started in the 1800's.   Then in the 1900's came the car, automobile, planes,  radio and tv.  All of these would not be possible  without the big corporations.    All of these things were done in the name of making money but the "common" people benefitted from these technological advances.    The government did not any invent of these.   It was due to all to private individuals hoping to make a buck.

More recently, now is known the information age.   The internet, cellphones, computers, social media,  all due to the "gaziollionnaires".    Sure these guys got rich but the common guy got the fruits of their entrepreneurship.   Governments did squat.

It doesn't matter if the oil barons have been the ones to help our 'Quality of life'... What matters is it's not benefiting us now.... At the expense of our future.... I'm seriously very close to being completely off the grid.  Within the next 6-10 yrs I will be 100% self sustainable.  That's all I can do... And guess what, my quality of life will be great.  Will I have convenience?  No, I'll have to work every day to maintain the systems and harvest the food I produce but again... How is that bad.  Our lives won't go back to the way it was before the industrial revolution.  We can use the tech that has been developed for a much more user friendly future.  I currently use a diesel converted truck that uses vegetable oil as the main fuel source.  Not 100% emission free but less and I'm only purchasing 15% of the diesel I did previously in a year.... And I can source the canola oil and also produce small quantities of some as well. I'm currently setting up an amazing micro hydro system on my property that will eventually supply me with 65% of my hydro yearly.  At peak times during rainier fall, winter and springs I'll be able to sell back some power to bc hydro.... It can be done, I'm just getting ahead of the curve that I think is coming whether we like it or not.  You have to be blind not to see the extreme changes occuring right before our eyes.  I figure human enduced or not... We aren't helping the changes slow down.  So prepare and do it while resources are still available.

The MDP thread got me thinking (and the post-game beverages here tonight!) about the incredibly positive impact Ian Clark has had on:

    1. DiPietro's game inclusive of his massive playoff run
    2. Markstrom's dramatic improvement after the intervention early in the just-completed season
    3. Demko's big steps forward

The Canucks were not thought of as having the type of goaltending strength that you need for success as recently as the beginning of this season and less than a year later without making a single change in player personnel other than trading one goalie away, they now look like they are set for both short-term, medium-term and if MDP develops further even the long-term.

Has Benning made a more positively impactful signing of a FA?

Rob... I saw your earlier post on the Mike.D forum.  Spot on.  I was going to start my first topic based on yours here!  Saved me time!

In my view, Ian Clark is the most important and most positive signing Jim has made since taking over as GM.

Sometimes just 'good' goaltending (with timely saves) and elite players around that goaltender can win a cup e.g.) Crawford in Chicago, Osgood in Detroit, Feur in Edmonton, Holtby in Washington last year (kinda).... Jones in San Jose this year?.  Great goalies for small window periods when it mattered most.  But not consistent year after year.

Sometimes an elite goaltender with a good team around him can win the cup e.g.) Montreal with Roy, Quick with L.A., and of course Brodeur with NJ.  Would have been Hasek with Buffalo as well but... We all know what happened there.  Rask with Boston this year? (not sure if he's consistent enough yet to be considered elite.. But lights out in these playoffs and might win them the cup... Please noooo!!!!).

To me the most exciting hockey, the most memorable hockey, the type a hockey that legends are made and legendary teams are immortalized, is a team with elite goaltending e.g.) 1994 Canucks.  Notice I didn't say elite goaltender... I said goaltending.

I digress... My point being, there is little to no chance a goalie will reach elite moments or whole careers without a great to elite goalie coach.  Ian has proved that in the past with Bobrosky, and is proving it again with Markstome.  It seems that both Demko and Dipietro speak highly about Clark and the work he's doing with them seems to have improved both their games.  With Ian, I believe the Canucks will be competing for the cup NEXT season and every other season after for the forseeable future.  He and Petey are the biggest reason for speeding up our slow rebuild.

My two guys are Soderstrom and Broberg.

Soderstrom seems to be a better playmaker and has great handles but Broberg's package is really enticing.

Both are the type of two-way D you want in today's game.

I was leaning towards Soderstrom but with watching these playoffs, size and speed rule... Add IQ and will, you got the full package player for both regular season and playoffs... So to me Broberg is my first choice on D.  Worth the risk, highest ceiling.  Could see him turning into a better Edler.

With those highlights... I'm sure Bennings eyes were glued to him watching Sweden yesterday.  Wow!  Highest ceiling for a defencemen in this draft... A bit more research but may turn out to be my first choice.

  10. 'Scouting Report

Aggressive winger with a nonstop motor and the ability to play much bigger than his measurements may indicate. Hoglander has played against adult competition in each of the last two seasons, and his dominance at the summer under-20 Four Nations tournament in August should earn him a berth on Rogle’s opening-night roster. He plays the game at a feverish pace no matter the score or how much time is left, and his compete level is exactly what you want in a skill forward who is summoned to tackle key situations. Hoglander isn’t big, but he is fearless in the corners and immediately bounces back from hefty wallops from older, larger opponents. Without the puck, he’s an aggressive forechecker with an active stick who will finish his checks and force turnovers or rushed passes with regularity.

Hoglander is a very good skater with first-step quickness who can accelerate to top speed in an instant. He controls his pace extremely well, and his quick feet and agility allow him to make sharp moves through the neutral zone. Hoglander is a capable stickhandler who weaves his way through a dense network of sticks and bodies, and his cutbacks lure opponents away from coverage before he exploits openings with hard, crisp passes on the tape. He can play the game either inside or out, and he’s a low-maintenance shooter thanks to a quick release and his ability to get shots on net while blanketed. Hoglander has excellent vision, and his decisions with the puck seem to always make sense.'

Where could the nucks get this guy... Between 20 and 30?

  11. "There's also moving down. Guys like Samuel Poulin and Nils Hoglander could be amazing additions. Hoglander would add a little bit of nasty and a whole lot of skill to a Pettersson line."

After hearing you mentioning Hoglander.... Wow!  Thus guys looks like a magician from the highlights!  Gotta check his size... Smaller 5'9" 185lbs 19 yrs old in December.  This kid though.... He is non stop motor, flexible, amazing edge work, great shot, great decision making.  Goes to dirty areas, fearless.... But not big.  I like him better then Caufield BUT.... I gotta watch and read more.  Thanks for sharing Snyps'

Pettersson has said himself he feels fine physically. It's probably just confidence thing when things aren't going in for him. I'm not seeing him try the dekes he would early in the season recently.

I've been to two games this year... One earlier in season and one just last week.  Watching Pettersson was quite a bit different.  He was definitely not as quick, puck control not nearly as on and even passes weren't as crisp.  He may not say it, but he is worn down for sure.  He may get a little bit of a spring in his step back because of Hughes arrival... Would be awesome to end season on a high note for sure.

I'm not sure you could get a better modern era pairing than Kieth - Weber when they were in their primes like they were for team Canada. Hughes is obviously closer to the Kieth mold than the Weber one, and finding someone even half as good as Weber to compliment him would be a big move for the franchise.

'Half as good as Weber'... Woo maybe?!

You're in for a treat!  Petey is everything you've seen or heard but better.  Seriously, t.v. doesn't show half of what he does.  Add in the skating and IQ of Hughes... It will be a sight to behold!

Do you remember the short lived Sports Station on 730 am?  I liked the morning show with a funny host (I forget his name) and would listen every day.  Then one morning, it was all of a sudden "All Traffic".  I think that's where 1040 is headed.  One day it will be "All Weather" or something like that.

I do remember that station.  I believe it was called moj radio... The host being Marjohnovich (sp?).  I was happy about the new station because I didn't like Dan at 980.  Then one day it was gone and team 1040 started up.
