We just drafted two players with the tenacity of Roussel and the skill of Pettersson.  What great finds.  Players like this can bring up the energy level of the entire team.  Could you imagine the following line in a couple years:

Podkolzin Horvat Hoglander - Wow!  Defenders watch out!

    Or load up first line:

    Hogs-Petey-Podz

    And/Or 1st PP

    'Scouting Report

Aggressive winger with a nonstop motor and the ability to play much bigger than his measurements may indicate. Hoglander has played against adult competition in each of the last two seasons, and his dominance at the summer under-20 Four Nations tournament in August should earn him a berth on Rogle’s opening-night roster. He plays the game at a feverish pace no matter the score or how much time is left, and his compete level is exactly what you want in a skill forward who is summoned to tackle key situations. Hoglander isn’t big, but he is fearless in the corners and immediately bounces back from hefty wallops from older, larger opponents. Without the puck, he’s an aggressive forechecker with an active stick who will finish his checks and force turnovers or rushed passes with regularity.

Hoglander is a very good skater with first-step quickness who can accelerate to top speed in an instant. He controls his pace extremely well, and his quick feet and agility allow him to make sharp moves through the neutral zone. Hoglander is a capable stickhandler who weaves his way through a dense network of sticks and bodies, and his cutbacks lure opponents away from coverage before he exploits openings with hard, crisp passes on the tape. He can play the game either inside or out, and he’s a low-maintenance shooter thanks to a quick release and his ability to get shots on net while blanketed. Hoglander has excellent vision, and his decisions with the puck seem to always make sense.'

Where could the nucks get this guy... Between 20 and 30?

Found it... Love at first sight!

Saw some clips on twitter.  The kid not only has filthy hands, he has sick edges too

I'll say it again... Hogs will be the second most skilled forward on this team in two years bar none... Barring a major  injury.  He's looking awesome!  So pumped!

Schenn is looking to see if there is a team that will give him a two year deal.  Likely the cap cost will be the same we are offering though.  It's that extra term Schenn will want.  He's like Schaller was last year.

Kinda got that...  I obviously don't have a clue of what I'm talking about! Thanks for the 'edgimication'.

I'm not sure if you're joking, but Schenn isn't worth more than 1.25M per year and that's being generous. I'd give him 1.0 or 1.1M.

Unfortunately I wasn't joking... But was wondering what he's worth, hence the question mark.  Thanks for the correction.  Was wondering though... If he is retained and they want him paired with Hughes.  Wouldn't they end up being 2nd pair (because of Hughes?).   If so, then low end second pairing $?  Or third pairing $ as you suggest?

I think Schenn wants to see his value on the open market, but I think he'll find that only the Canucks cared about his mini-revival at the end of the season and his best offer will be with Vancouver.

I hope you're right and he comes back.  Like you said, I think he has more value here then on the open market.  Regardless, even if he gets paid for that value here, it should still be at a reasonable cap number. Maybe 4 to 5 million over two years?

I'm really happy with this pick. I like getting him instead of Zegras. Podkolzin just brings so much more to the table IMO.

I don't know if he will bring 'more' but I'd agree that he has skill sets we've been lacking.  I feel Zegras has MORE overall high end skill, BUT his style is closer to what we already have in Petey.  Whereas Pod, I believe has complementary skills to Petey and make our team, as a whole, more complete.

If you're gonna push me for an answer right now, then no, sorry - I don't believe we make it the way we're built right now at this exact moment

We had a pretty terrible -30 goal differential last season.  The last wildcard team (Col) had a +14 differential - theoretically that's almost 45 more goals we need to score than allow and still hope the other lower teams don't improve equally as much as us or worst case, leapfrog us entirely.  Does anyone realistically see us closing that gap with virtually the exact same forward roster plus Miller?  Not to mention we were 23rd overall in the league in GF - we desperately need to score and all we did was add Miller - even if he has a career year and gets say 30g, we still need to find more scoring from somewhere.  That's not even mentioning the defence which imo is the biggest weakness of this club right now.  We let in the 5th most goals in the entire western conference last season and as it stands right now, we're bringing back pretty much the EXACT same defense core with the exception of having a full year of Hughes - and let's be honest, we expect a lot of the kid because we're CDC, but NO ONE expects him to be the guy who comes in here and sets the defensive tone in our own end.

Listen, I desperately want this club to succeed, but realistically, the way we are built right now, I don't see playoffs happening.  People are recently saying we can expect development and improvement from within as our core group of kids naturally get better and put up more numbers - well what club in the west doesn't have a group of young kids who will do the same - so for me that's a wash.  AZ,Chi,Edm can all realistically expect improvement as well imo (well maybe not EDM lol:).  Their franchises aren't standing still - they are improving also.  So where have we improved significantly right now where other non-playoff teams haven't?  Imo, we haven't improved enough in the most important areas - putting goals in the other teams net, and keeping goals out of our own net.

I haven't even touched on the aging vets who will undoubtedly get injured along the way - Sutter, Tanev, Eagle, Roussel, maybe Beagle again - some of these guys will undoubtedly suffer injuries and where's the depth to replace them, especially on defence?

Maybe JB will pull a rabbit out of a hat and surprise us with something (or scare the bejesus out of us once again on July1) this summer?

But like I said, the exact way we are put together right now at this very moment on June 23rd - I don't see playoffs next spring unfortunately.    People may not like hearing that, but objectively, realistically, that's how I see it.

A very thorough no.  You have a bunch of well articulated points that point to the canucks not making it this year.  I will agree that odds are them not making it verses not.  I just believe they will find a way and surprise the majority naysayers.

Ask me when the dust finally settles this off-season.

I understand but the question is for right now (pull out your crystal ball!)... What do you think?  Gotta put your neck out there.

I think absolutely!  I see us either 'overachieving' and getting in the #6-7 spot and making a run to at least deep into the second round or just missing and moving up into the top 3 of the lottery!

Either way this seasons going to be a great one... gauranteed!

I say this once a year. CDC is a horrible place to be during the summer. I hang around until July 2nd and then I take a vacation as the stupidity rises to new levels about then. This year it seems to start early.

I loved to come here for news on trades as they often came out a bit early here vs. TSN or Sportsnet etc. Now we get the news off twitter and ’discuss’ them from there on. By page 3 the disussion is no longer on topic, it’s insult after another and people crying out loud like infants. It is a discussion board, we know, and everyone is entitled to an opinion. But in general all that looks like is a below average fan base.

I think this board should be for positive stuff and motivation between fans. People here (minus just a few members) are just making a fool out of themselves.

I personally like the trade. The only thing I dont like about it is the excitement a 1st round choice gives me. The anticipation, the potential. Other than that it’s just a gamble. Now we know what we get. I’m more than fine with this move. Bring on the season. Ok, july 1st and then the season!

I actually just posted in there that I have less concern over the Miller trade than i do with JB not drafting any D men so far. especially after he said he was going to improve the D pool this year.

    Hoglander is just another Schroeder.

Agree its a different Gm though, i just see it as the same mistake. 1915

Okay... Well we'll agree to disagree.  Let's pick this chat up in a couple years.
