What do you want the GM to do about team effort? That responsibility should fall on the players and, to a certain extent, the coaches.
I agree that this team needs a change, but maybe the asking prices are too high at the moment. I wouldn't want Gillis to trade away our prospects for a rental player.

Is it gillis' fault the twins aren't producing? We have all the keys we just need to the players to play at what their value is. Right now it isn't happening. December it was.

Is it really that the canucks need another goal scorer or is it more that we need our star players to start producing.
Sedins have been brutal as of late, too busy thinking about the olympics already I guess. No fight or want in their game and are easily being knocked off the puck. Just something that didn't used to happen with them. When your top two offensive players arn't going so does the teams goal total. Something needs to wake them up.

and switch weise and kassian
-
Please please bench the sedins
-
And thats what happens
-
Weise over kassian on the 2nd unit pp?
-
Seriously why do we throw the same guys out on the PP hoping something will change? Put someone else out there sedins aren't playing to win any more
-
WHY ARE THE SEDINS ON THE PP?
Enough of this garbage
-
Please don't start with the twins line
-
Ahh this game is getting me so frustrated. Sedins have not been great leaders lately, they don't seem to want it and are not out there trying to win battles. We need to stop picking on guys like booth and start healthy scratching some of our core. Send a message that is you don't want to work for it your not going to play

Get the puck out
Hammer had all the $#%% time in the whole world and he rims it around the board.
Dumb #$%%ing play
Sit him on the bench
-
The twins need to be taken off the 1st pp unit, they've been giving way to much opportunity. if it was any other players they would have been demoted a long time ago..
Time to give others more PP time.
What do we got to lose its not like our pp can get any worse

that was offside on the change

Four line by far our best line after first period

edler up to his old tricks

How about a friggin' scoring winger for the Sedins?
You guys don't need anymore centers.
Why does everyone think the Sedins needs another high end line mate. They are two elite players themselves and elite 1st line players should be able to play with anyone as their line mate. Usually someone who would be a regular 3rd or 2nd liner on any other team gets placed on a line with the elite first line players. Not many teams have 3 elite players all on the same line.
Toews Sharp Bickell
Crosby Kunitz _____whoever they feel at the time
Malkin Neal _____
Hossa Kane Saad (as a rookie last year)
Stamkos St Louis _____
Ovechkin Backstrom Mojo
Seguin Benn ____
Anyone see the trend?
-
To Colorado: Edler
To Winnipeg: O'Reilly
To Vancouver: Kane
Thats actually a good starting point. Add a few player/prospects/pick here or there and it makes it interesting.
AV's want a top 4 D
Jets want a true 1/2 C
Canucks want scorer with some grit.
Add Ott on deadline.
Sedin Sedin Burrows
Higgins Kesler Kane
Booth Ott Kassian
Sestito Richardson Weise
Size and skill, Hansen and santo seem like the odd men out tho, line up could be juggled around.
-
So you reckon Stamkos, Ovechkin, Malkin, Carter, Giroux etc., the good goal scorers score all their goals on the perimeter?
I have some news...
They score the same tough goals as Wheeler, but get twice as many cuz they can also score from outside the box.
And can handle the pinner of a pass when they head to the net.
Yes a priority on some skills pls!
I have some news... Stamkos, Ovechkin, Malkin, Carter, Giroux don't play for the canucks and we will never acquire one of them either
Roy has a high end skill that was reasonable to acquire. He's been a 50+ point pace guy every season except his rookie season. Even this season with the blues he's on pace for over 50 points. He did a whole lot for us in playoffs. Canucks need more players that aren't afraid to get dirty and pay the price to win. Kesler can only do so much, but it's easy to understand why he's usually our best players come playoff time.

Honestly that's why I look at Ladd/Wheeler over Kane in Peg deals...They can drive the play and score dirty goals and can push the play/be the physical presence on the ice and its not so 1 dimensional play whereas pure snipers are just that...I don't see Kane in a best of 7 series against Boston, LA, San Jose, Anaheim, etc being the key to winning whereas a Ladd/Wheeler can play Browns style without going all in like we did last night...Way I see it anyway
That's exactly what I was getting at. Sedin's have a tendency of becoming more perimeter type players come playoff time, We need someone with size that can drive the puck to the net and make life hard for a goalie. Not just stop the wristers from the outside with no traffic of fear of rebounds.

I'm going to ask a serious question and I only want smart, well thought out answers. Why does everyone think this team needs a top 6 goal scorer come playoff time?
Now before you answer with how I know everyone is going to answer.
-Bos 8 goals in 7 games
-LA 8 goals in 5 games
-SJ 8 goals in 4 games
What reasoning is there that our team doesn't score come playoff time against those teams?
We don't seem to have trouble against CHI, NSH, or even SJ in 2010 so why those teams?
The Penguins only scored 3 goals in 4 games against BOS last year. Do they need to go out and get more scoring?
Now while your thinking of the response try to remember what everyone said was missing on our team in 2010.

Good points. Would you not agree to some extent though that a failure of bringing in additional top scoring talent, as identified following 2011, would allow more effective use of the Sedins? The fact they are having to be PP specialists, PK specialists, carry the offense and cover D zone starts is an indication that the quality of the top 6 is lacking.
While the support cast has provided some secondary scoring, the lack of a true "sniper"/play-maker has been lacking and continues to be a problem for this team. They simply lack enough pure offensive talent to compete with the top teams. They are still relatively small compared to the St Louis, LA and Anaheim teams especially in the top 6. Our top 4 D are not overly physical and one can see how other teams feel about them in the way our goaltender are constantly under siege and being run.
It may not be as dire as many (and I at times) think but MG and the entire hockey world has known the Nucks lack scoring talent in the top 6 and have for 3 years. MG has not addressed that. For that point, he gets a fail.
Either you think Gillis has done a decent job or you hate him for some reason. All I ever hear is “we’ve had this hole since our cup run and he’s done nothing to fix it.” What is everyone asking him to do? Trade and acquire a top 6 forward that meshes in with this team. All without removing the core that made the cup run in 2011. Guess what Gillis has done that. Booth prior to his injury was producing at a 50 point pace. Is it Gillis’ fault that he has ran into injury problems, not at all, by a GM’s standard he acquired a player that was needed to fill a hole. Booth also had size as an upside that helped drive a puck to the net. Again by a Gm’s stand point he did everything right with that trade.
Booth gets hurt, so what does Gillis do next, he brings in a constant 50 point playmaking center to set up and give Ryan Kesler some support. Something everyone is calling for. “Kesler isn’t producing like he used to give him someone more to play with than Raymond” Done, Roy is brought in. From a GM’s stand point he’s done exactly what he’s needed to. Add the missing elements to our roster without disrupting the core that was one game away from the Stanley cup.
To say he hasn’t done anything to add secondary scoring is a complete joke. The players he’s acquired may have not turned out, he’s done his job, the play of the players he’s traded for is up to the coaching staff and the players them self to turn out. It’s not like he hasn’t tried to address the issues of secondary scoring. A lot of players don’t work out. Roy this year is on pace for over 50 points. What, “it’s Gillis’ fault he didn’t mesh with Kesler”. WSH traded for Erat for secondary scoring, Toronto signed Clarkson, Columbus traded for Gaborik, PIT traded for Iggy. Not every trade works out the way it intended, and a lot of the time it has nothing to do with the GM’s miscue of it not working out.
To sit here and blame Gillis, is to sit blind and not look around the league to see what goes on with every team. Hossa flopped around with three different teams (still was an impact player) before having things work out for him in CHI. Again I’ve already posted a list of all the players who’ve been traded since our cup run 2011, that have produced at a 50+ point pace. There were 19 player and Vancouver has had 2 of them on their roster. Any of the other players out of the 19 would have cost us more than the scraps we gave up to acquire Roy and Booth. I’m sure Gillis has had the opportunity to acquire a top six scorer since 2011 but it would likely have created another hole on our team that you and everyone else would be complaining about.
As a GM we should be happy for having a good GM like Gillis, we could be in Toronto situation where their future relies on 3 guys who I would never want to build a core around. We could have Holmgren who throws money around just for fun, or even be in a situation like EDM or CAL where they already haven’t made the playoff in 5+ years and who knows when the next time they will ever ice a competitive team. Remember when people were praising Feaster to signing O’Reilly to an offer sheet.
What more can you ask for than a guy who’s built a team that consistently makes playoffs with an aging core and is starting to stock up top notch prospects for the future. I think it’s more of a case that everyone has forgot what it’s like to miss the playoffs year after year and cheer for a team that gives little in return to the fan. Quit your whining everyone Gillis has easily been the best GM this franchise has ever seen. You’d all find something to complain about even if we won the cup back to back in 2011 and 2012 but still happened to get swept by the sharks last year.

... For the ones currently going to the Olympics...
Besides, the good ones all know how to get around any testing.
Not at the olympic, something taken very seriously.
And that's what your theory relies on. He knows how to out smart the world Olympic committee who sole job it is to enforce this rule of zero tolerance of PED, but the good ones all know how to get around it. Strong basis.

You do realize hockey isn't a game that the strongest are the best. We'd have teams full of George Laraque's running around. PED do not improve the natural hockey sense and skill set. Something a player like Patrick kane has. Kane the same player who won the conn smythe last year as the best player in the playoffs. And before you go off thinking PED make super players. Here the common misconception. Canucks aren’t scoring, so that means we need to obtain a goal scorer. For example right now we have scored 1 goal in the last three games, but it’s not because we don’t have a true sniper, it’s simply because our team and star players are way underperforming I don’t care who you put on the twins line they are simply not putting in the effort lately and become invisible at times. We shouldn’t expect the twins to completely carry the team but we can and should be expecting 1-2 goals a game coming from our first line which hasn’t happened in a long time. Unfortunately even if we do bring in a pure goal sniper we still need our star players to play at what their true value is.
We have put the money and term into the Sedin’s our goal scoring woes start and end with them. We can’t put that much emphasis on the secondary scoring at the Sedin’s are taking up the majority of offensive zone opportunity (PP). Imagine what the Pens would look like if Crosby and Malkin stopped scoring, or the Duck with Perry and Getzlaf. It’s up to them (the players) to figure this slump out not so much the GM.
A player like O’Reilly would greatly help out the Canucks. His a younger more offensive version of Ott. He is the type of players that will drive to the net when everyone else is playing perimeter hockey. He provides that option that when players like the twins are not producing they can be replaced. Guys like him are key to playoff success.
