  1. LA lost, so all we need is PHX to lose tonight against pens and Minny to lose against Calgary, and than this loss doesn't really matter.

Sadly tonight i'm going to the game and am hoping for calgary to win. I wont cheer out load but i'll be hoping

  2. He's a 4th line center at best. Manny had wheels, 3rd line checking centers have speed. Sending Gaustad in to forecheck or expecting him to back check is a large part of the reason Nashville is suffering so badly on their bottom 6.

And I am not Biased, I am stating very clearly Hansen to the right team is worth a 1st round pick.

This isn't an argument it is a statement of fact. At the deadline there are teams who will give up a 1st round pick in the 20-30 spot for a guy like Hansen. No bias, just reality. Teams overpay at the deadline.

but again, totally disregard the fact I said a couple of 2nd round picks or a 2nd and 3rd is more realistic

Four line centers don't have cap hits of over 3 million. Your extremely overvalue Hansen and way undervaluing Gaustad.

Even still Gaustad getting traded for a 1st wasn't a good deal for NSH, Gaustad has more value than Hansen, definitely a better playoff utility player than hansen

  3. Quit arguing semantics. Gaustad got a 1st round pick in return. Doesn't matter if he had to give Poile a box of timbits as well. He got a 1st round pick in a trade. Not unlikely that Hansen could get the same return to a contending team in the top 10 in the league or bottom 20 of the draft (depending on how you look at it)

Gaustad is a 6"5 center. There are hundreds of players in the NHL that can replace what hansen brings. A small grinder with speed that is ok defensively. He works hard but every team has players like hansen. He's not worth anything near a first. I like Hansen but he offers very little to a team.

  4. 08/09 - 246 Goals - 100 pts - 2nd round exit.

    09/10 - 272 Goals - 103 pts - 2nd round exit.

    10/11 - 262 Goals - 117 pts - 4th round exit.

    11/12 - 249 Goals - 111 pts - 1st round exit.

    12/13 - 217 Goals - 101 pts - 1st round exit. (Goals and points prorated to 82 games.)

13/14 - 207 Goals - 94 pts - Miss playoffs? (Goals and points are what we are on pace for.)

This is the Mike Gillis era to date. A three year ascent followed by a three year decline which sharpens each season. When will the Aquilinis stop the bleeding is what I'd like to know?

I've posted this before but it would be better to compare goals as related to the entire leagues goal perduction.

2010 canucks were number #2 in goals per game

    2011 canucks were number #1

    2012 canucks were # 5

2013 canucks slowed down to 20th in a shortened season (easily could have been written off as an off year due to players not going overseas to keep in game shape)

    2014 yes we are hurting

As Gillis trying to fill this teams needs

2012 - Canucks needed to get bigger and not get pushed around like they did in the boston series - Gillis brought in Kassian and Booth

2013 - Canucks needed to improve our secondary scoring (a playmaking center for kelser is what everyone called for) Gillis traded for Roy. Giliis needs to start filling in our prospect pool with offence, drafts two solid picks

In reality Gillis has done a great job attempting to fills the holes on this team. It's something I've been saying for a while. Why do so many people blame a slumping team on a GM, that's up to the players themselves and the coaches.

A slumping complete season sure blame the GM but it's only been "one" month of our top players slumping and somehow its the GM's fault. If Burrows and Daniel even score 7-10 more goals each this team would be top 7 in the league and we wouldn't hear all this whinning.

Important players have slumps on teams, when that happens good teams lose, (WSH when ovi was having troubles, PIT is the BOS series last year, CHI in 2011) We just need to break our top line players out and we will be laughing. The fact that we've held onto a playoff spot with the absence of our stars just goes to show the type of depth Gillis has acquired for this team.

  5. yep, i was thinking about it this morning actually. it took the flames 9 YEARS after their cup run to accept reality and offload their assets. it took those same 9 years for them to draft a player that has a legitimate shot at being a star 1st liner.

as great as horvat, shinkaruk etc will hopefully become, nobody in the canucks system has the high end skill to become a consistent 80-100 point player, and frankly, until the team accepts reality, they won't be replacing the outgoing stars via the draft because they won't be drafting top 5.

Here's the biggest difference. Calgary ended up with a rebuild becuase they kept trading their 1st round picks and youth to bring in players to "make playoffs/attempt to make playoffs". The the 1 round picks they did have they went off the charts with trading down and drafting Jankowski. When calgary desided to finally head that way of a rebuild their cupboards were completely bare. They has 1 or 2 tradeable assets and their core was old with no young potential. The big difference is canucks have a fairly young talented core that is already making an impact in the NHL. Kassian, Tanev, Schreoder, Stanton, Lack. Plus we are starting to stock up our prospects: Horvat, Shinkaruk, Gaunce, Cassels, Lain.Jensen We've already started to develop the next core and as long as don't go trading young peices away to go all in for a cup run we will not have to go through the calgary senerio.

If you really want to compare the teams, Canucks are already farther along than the flames inthe "Rebuild" and we dont have to miss the playoffs. This could change if flames manage to draft a game changer like McDavid but that's a big IF

  6. Too many people on this thread don’t understand the game of hockey. Canucks have a bad game and people blame it on the GM, canucks go on a bit of a slump in one month after just setting a franchise record in the previous month and again it’s the GM’s fault some of the players aren’t scoring.

Come to think of it. It’s all Gillis’ fault Burrows hasn’t scored this season after putting up great numbers his last 5 seasons, it’s also Gillis’ fault the twins haven’t played like they have in previous years.

Honestly what’s going through some people’s minds. A GM’s role is to put the piece in place. He’s done that. It’s up for the players to make it happen. Not to make excuses but there are so many things that makes a team good/bad that are out of the GM’s hands.

2012 Daniel Sedin getting a concussion and only playing in 2 playoff games. We were 1-1 with him in the lineup. We also ran into the hottest team in the NHL that ousted ever team they came up against, it didn’t matter if we played the kings in the first series or the conference finals, no team was beating the Kings that year.

2013 Sharks out PP us like 37-8, no way were winning a series playing shorthanded the entire time. We were about 24 inches from making that series a 1-1 series tie when Hansen missed the empty net. Is it Gillis fault hasn’t panicked and didn’t focus that shot. Series would have been completely different if he hit the net.

So in reality what can you blame Gillis for not doing? The under performance of our top players?

  7. PGT notes:

    1. Edler's playing like he wants to be traded. Kesler gave him a look after Edler was caught on an incredibly lazy play and Kesler had to cover him.

    2. Booth outplayed Burrows by a wide margin. Booth! Burrows is a horrible, horrible hockey player at the moment. Remember when Burr took the team on his back and started carrying the Canucks and prevented AV's termination? That's history. Now he looks utterly spent. WTF?

    3. Guys who were trying last night: Kesler, Bieksa (who had to act like a forward late game), Higgins (nice effort level, but not a top-6er), Kassian (still working on everything), Schroeder (bless him, but he falls down on his own), Richardson (good effort, good faceoff wins, but a 4th liner), Hamhuis, and Booth.

    4. Guys who were 'kinda' there and/or floating around: Sedin, Edler, Burrows, Garrison, Luongo.

    5. Chicago dominated 80% of the game, didn't let the Canucks thin attempts at physical play get under their skin, showcased their elite talent and superior system with ease, and got saves from their goaltender when required. The time when we could compete with that group seems like a fading memory. Although this was predicted, as their core group is constantly being backed up with waves and waves of recently-drafted prospects that they've developed. Remember when we were supposed to be able to do that? We were supposed to 'emulate Detroit' in this regard? It's not here. Schroeder played 20mins and he looked like he cannot handle that time, and he was the only Canuck-drafted young prospect playing last night.

Now if only those players played llke the can (which we haven't seen for a while) we would look like a pretty good team. If we didn't have our top 4 guys slumping this bad this team would easily be a top 6-7 team. Thats the thing, we have the pieces, we just need the players to play at the level we've gotten used of them. That lies on the coaching and the players themselves. Torts these last few (5) games hasn't been good at getting the players ready, he's been rather non noticable.........................................

On a side note, was awesome seeing Kes lay the body. Did he ever level Oduya.

  8. I can't wait for this team to come back pumped up after the olympics and goes on a tear in playoffs. So many people will look like complete fools, completely writing this team off when were still in a playoff spot and were only in JAN.

But once we win a few games, people will be right back on the wagon cheering them on.

  9. The fact that you think Winnipeg is a bad team makes it impossible to take your post seriously.

Winnipeg beat ducks, Does that mean the OP thinks the ducks and the Hawks (who jets beat last night) are bad teams as well?

Bad team do win games too, against good teams. This league is full of NHL talent on every team.

  10. The Sedins lack of production this season has nothing to do with them getting older.

-They've had very little in the way of a third line mate with any regularity, chemistry, or anyone that would be considered "top 6" talent.

-Hank (and I suspect Daniel as well) has been playing through injury.

-They've had even less secondary scoring support this year then the paltry support they've received the last few years.

Give them a talented, regular linemate with chemistry (perhaps Burr when he rounds back in to form?), a healthy Hank (and maybe Danny) and get a legit top 6 guy this summer and you will see them regain their standard 1+/PPG again.

I’ll disagree with that. Hank and Daniel are supposed to be elite talents. How many teams have a number one line full of elite players. I’ve posted this before but I’ll post it again

    Toews Sharp Bickell

Crosby Kunitz _____whoever they feel at the time

    Malkin Neal _____

Hossa Kane Saad (as a rookie last year)

    Stamkos St Louis _____

    Ovechkin Backstrom Mojo

    Seguin Benn ____

    Getzlaf Perry ____

There’s a common theme, two elite players can make fringe second/ third liners play like on a top linemate

We have seen in the past that these two can play with anyone; Arvedson, Klatt, Bertuzzi, Jason King, Carter, Pyatt, Burrows and still be dominant players. I don’t know if it is age that has caught up with them, injuries, or just a lack of confidence from not scoring but they don’t look the same. They often lose battle and easily get knocked off the puck, something that was unheard of in the past. Can anyone really say that Daniel looks like a 7 million player without his brother?

The good thing is that these two players are extremely smart, committed and highly talented players. They are not that old and can still catch fire to become the players they were in the past. My hope is now that Henrik is missing a few games he can look at the game from a different view, not take for granted his own talents and really use them again. Sometimes playing that many games consecutively doesn’t let you see a different angle of the things that happen on ice. Maybe some time off is what he needed to get going again.

  11. People should expect and learned by now that if it's any Canuck disciplinary and or player infraction where Shanaban and Count Bettman are involved to review then it's a guarantee WORST case scenario and extreme hand down verdict even with or without obvious league precedence.

See - Aaron Rome in Finals it was a late hit that cause horton to miss the rest of the playoffs, he deserved something

See - Kassian with Gagner Kassian broke a players jaw with his stick

See - Edler with Hertl Past history and he made contact with Hertl's head

See - Roy go crazy on the bench (no fine) Roy was fined $10,000

See - Calgary's involvement Saturday (not even any comment) There was lots of talk about it, Hartley got fined $25,000

See - reffing against Vancouver post-Auger incident (no NHL action) I don't even know what your expecting

See - Auger's discipline for calling out Burrows and making him 'pay' (no fine/NHL action) No proof can't fine someone on the word of one player, when has there ever been a fine for something similar,

See - Hanzal on 3 Canuck players (minor fine) Booth didn't miss any games, no previous history at least he got fined

See - Keith on Daniel Sedin (was there even a penalty? + no fine/NHL action) He did get a penalty and suspended 5 games.

See - McGrattan's hit on Alberts (no fine/NHL action) I agree something could have happened but 1 or 2 games max

See - Nolan's charge/kneeing on Henrik Sedin (no fine/NHL action) He didn't even hit Henrik why would there be a suspension of even a fine for that, Wiese's slue foot was worse

    I could go on...

  12. Roy crossed the line also there is no difference between going bezerk off the bench or on the bench also Roy wasn't reaching over the glass to get to the other bench he was pushing the thing down towards the other coaches and players big difference

There's a huge difference he might as well waited for him outside the building and jumped him when he was coming out. ON and OFF the ice is completely different.

Bertuzzi gets a 20+ for breaking Moore's neck on the ice, if he does it in the hall way during the intermission, not only is he going to jail he's likely band from the league.

This isn't even something anyone can argue here. Completely different situations.

  13. Roy did the exact same thing in front of everyone in the building

I have to agree with Glassjaw

Theres a huge difference between on and off ice. There have been many examples of coaches losing their cool on the bench, throwing sticks/water bottles/towels on the ice. Theres been plenty of other times coaches have tried to cross the benches to get at the other coach.

Torts crossed the line, you first don't go near the other teams dressing room (ever) not even to have a friendly chat and you certainly don't do it to get after the other teams coach. Huge difference between on and off ice antics
