Occupy Vancouver Protesters

The chanting crowd stood atop the highest point of Robson Square and decided to call it their new home.

"Tents here," yelled one of the organizers. "Grab this space."

It's expected tents will be pitched atop the award winning Arthur Erickson complex, bounded by Robson, Smythe, Howe and Hornby Streets.

With that the loosely organized group retreated to the former Occupy site to recover their belongings and bring them to the newly established Occupy site -- once again in the very heart of the city.

It is one block south of the original site at the Art Gallery lawn on Georgia Street.

Police are keeping a watchful eye from a respectful distance allowing the protesters to go about their reorganization with no intervention.

Mayor Gregor gave a press conference just prior to the 2pm VAG eviction deadline:

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said police will offer backup to city staff this afternoon as they attempt to sweep the Art Gallery plaza which has been home to the Occupy tent city for over a month.

Robertson said that roving protests by the Occupy group would be acceptable —— provided they take their tents down.

“Everyone has the right to protest,” he told reporters at city hall one hour before the court order to clear the site is about to go into effect.

“We have hundreds of protests every year. Tent cities are not acceptable. We don’t want to allow another tent camp.”

So what does he do now?
