This.

The Canucks have had two top picks in the top 10 of the NHL draft in 14 years.....We are basically a victim of our own success....Now,it's starting to become apparent because we have no secondary scoring,or guys blossoming into their prime. Most of the elite teams..Kings.Peguins,Blackhawks all tanked for 2-3 years and got elite players off of the bat...I'm hoping we can follow the Sharks model and retool on the fly.

I'll give you 3 examples to prove this is a long term systemic problem

1. 1971 Canucks draft 5'5" 155# Bobby Lalonde at #17 in the second round

at #19 Craig Ramsey 1000+ games, at #20 Larry Robinson, and at #22 Rick Kehoe 371 Goals

2. In 99,-2003 the Canucks drafted Hank n Dank (99) Nathan Smith & Brandon Reid (00), 2 career goals, Umburger, Fedorov, Bieksa & King (01) Umburger has 156 Goals, 0 with the Canucks, Fedor & King have 12, Bieksa is a good player for Van, in 02, Rob McVicar & Brett Skinner, 12 nhl games, (03) Kesler

That is 5 NHL players in 5 years

Anahiem drafted 13 players who played 177NHL games minimum in that time period

But that was before Gillis' time right?

3, 2009 Van selects Schroeder at #23, 5'9" 170#, 34 games 9pts to date

Chicago Marcus Kruger # 149, 147 Games

Philly #172 Eric Wellwood, 31 games 10 pts

Next year Schroeder will be waiver eligible and could be had for a 4th like Dalpe

Detroit has had more success than the Nucks but still manages to draft well. The secret is knowing when to move players for prosepcts/picks. Gillis has let quality/key players walk while trading away prospects/picks on rentals. His strategy has been the opposite of what long-term successful teams do.

Another issue has been the treatment of the youth under the Gillis/AV years. The entitlement of the core made it impossible for young guys to break-in and get a meaningful role until after they had slogged it out on the 4th line and paid their dues. Other top teams put their young players in apposition to succeed with the kinds of mature/talented players that compliment their skill-set. Any wonder the Nucks didn't land Schultz? That Cody wanted out? They had everything in their favour and Schultz chose Edmonton.
