Lol I can't believe how many posts in here mention Edler as a top pair D man. Edler is top pair if your a contender in the tankformcdavid sweepstakes.

We should resign Tanev though, but make it a mid length contract. 3 years at 3m or something in that area. He can take a raise when it's done if he deserves it, and if he doesn't we aren't stuck with a boat anchor contract.

Defense does win championships (just ask LA/Chicago/Boston) and not like we have any forwards deserving of big raises anyways, may as well use it where we can. And I said between $3.5-$4.25 mill...i don't see any other way he signs for less than that long term and if it's anothervbridge, then you get the same problem later down the road unless you have a better suggestion.

I do think its time to get past bridge deals with Tanev.

I think its fair to suggest we know he is a solid long term NHL top 4 D. But long term $3.5 to $4 is about right IMO. For 4 or 5 years, preferably 6. Not two or 3 and let him run UFA.

He's not a 30 point guy. He could get there, but only if given a lot of preferential treatment. I say that because as good as he is passing, calm smoking a cigarette cool moving the puck... He's still not a gifted stickhandler. And does not have a big shot. We shouldn't be overplaying him offensively at the expense of sourcing someone who has those talents. He's also 190 lb soaking wet.

For a great defenseman, who is not a game breaker in any way, that is fair?

I think 3.25M for 4 years is fair. 2.8-3M for 3 years would be ideal too. He is undrafted and I think he would gladly take one of those two offers. He's probably one of the most reliable defensemen we've ever had in a long time. The fact that he only has 11 penalties in his 162 career says a lot. You can even combine that with his +/- if you want. If we are going to pay him 3.5-4M+, he's got to put up points as well.

yea i think 3.25 M is fair. He's mobile, fast, reliable, but he doesn't put up points.

Tanev is a good safe defender but is not a complete player and would not command top minutes on a contending team.

-No offense. Cannot shoot the puck and passing while improving is mediocre in the offensive zone.

-Not a physical player along the boards

-No hitting

Tanev is great positionally and blocks a lot of shots. Above average speed makes him look appealing.

Good on the PK but really there's not much else to his game.

Not that Tanev is not a valuable player, but how much money do you give for defensive specialist with no grit?
