After a surprising season that saw Detroit clicnh the 6th seed in the playoffs after 2 years of rebuilding, an offseason of changes has the fans feeling optimistic of an even better result being possible. Captain Niklas Kronwall was able to lead the team to a final playoff push before he retired, and is expected to join the Wings in an off ice position in the near future. Trade deadline aquistion Gabriel Landeskog proved he was worth the high trade cost, leading the team in points. During the draft, Detroit was able to make a deal to get Alex Pietrangelo who will be the cornerstone of the defense in the short and long term. Development from young players such as Leon Draisaitl, Evgeny Svechnikov and Shea Theodore has the team confident in a repeat of last season's success. Goalie Matt Murray had the best season of his career and already is among the elite goalies in the NHL at 25 years of age. With the retirement of  Kronwall the captain, as well as associate captain Danny Dekeyser being traded away, there is a new leadership group for the 2019-2020 season: Gabriel Landeskog will continue the trend of Swedish captains, and regains the role he had in Colorado. Dylan Larkin will keep his "A" and Alex Pietrangelo will be the leader of the defense, also wearing the "A"
