Role of BP in the 1953 Iran coup

Interesting to note that BP is probably one of the most hated companies in US, especially after Deep Water Horizon, the blast in Texas and some other tragedies. The company went from being the 2nd largest oil company in the world to now being the 5th/6th largest after divestments. This is the company that basically shows disregard for any life just to profit.

Unless you are living under a rock, the CIA have been involved in toppling governments so that US businesses can have their way. United Fruit Company in Latin America. (Chiquta bananas), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Fruit_Company .

Blackwater had to change their name to Academi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academi). There are very few "ethical" oil companies. ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, due to the colossal profits that can be made, effect the geopolitical climate. Hell, the US was aiding Hussien when he was at war with Iran. And despite embargoes, people in the US government was selling arms to Iran, to serve it's interests in Nicarauga, and fund the Contras. George HW Bush (who was ex-CIA and probably involved) pardoned all those involved in the final days of his presidency.

Chalmers Johnson, who was a CIA consultant had noted how much of this veiled colonialism, and how deep the connections are was fearful of democracy. As he pointed out.

"A nation can be one or the other, a democracy or an imperialist, but it can’t be both. If it sticks to imperialism, it will, like the old Roman Republic, on which so much of our system was modeled, lose its democracy to a domestic dictatorship."

It's kind of random on a hockey forum (even if off topic), but I think it's a good history lesson that most people don't learn about. Iran was doing pretty well until the Brits and US intervened and stole the oil and toppled their government. If people honestly want to know why there's such anti-West rhetoric in Iran, they just have to read Iran's history on wikipedia. It's there for all to see, and this interview video summarizes it fairly briefly but effectively. Good post.

Watch the Oliver Stone multi-part  documentary on Netflix..."History of the United States"  or something like that.  No earth shaking revelations or info you'd be killed for possessing but a facts laid bare account of the machinations of the US and its government basically since the 1930's.  Very interesting material.

Iran had no idea they had oil or what to do with it. it was BP that found it, made a deal with the monarch to drill for it and take it.  Only after Iran just took "nationalized" the resource did the UK/US topple the gov.
