don't fall for it JB.this is exactly like the time the media and hockey experts told everyone there was only going tiny, fast and skilled forwards.hockey is hockey.you win by getting the most out of your lineup and using they're best attributes to their fullest.unless they're planning on taking the violence completely out i don't see this happening.you need a blend in your lineup.that hockey news article is absolute dribble,it's like saying all boxers will fight southpaw from now on or ufc fighters will only use judo because the last guy won a title using it.garbage.they'll fall for it though like when the devils won by trapping everyone to death, then we had the ugly dead puck era for the next ten years, that did wonders for viewership......not.

Ehrhoff was probably the closest.

In 2010... he was only beaten out by Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty, Mike Green, Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Pronger, Zdeno Chara, Shea Weber, and Dan Boyle.

Sure... that's a long list, but almost every single one of those players are going into the HHOF.

Yup. He had a whopping 28 votes or 2.2%. It was actually pretty close that year between 1st (Lidstrom 736 votes) and 2nd (Weber 727 votes). The year before Ehrhoff had 21 votes and Keith won with 1096  votes. The year after, when Ehrhoff had shuffled off to Buffalo, Hamhuis, Edler, and Bieksa all got votes (26 combined) while Ehrhoff was blanked. Leaving me to believe it was definitely local/provincial sports writers giving our guys the votes.

Ehrhoff was a beast for us, but definitely not Norris caliber. I don't think we've ever really had such a D-man.

Bit of a silly article as size/speed don't go hand in hand.   Would always take a fast big man over equally fast small for a D - wingspan is important and just mass for shot blocking and steering players.   So many big men skate well now that it should not be about size but about the pace which you play.   A small fast guy is only going to work if there is some team toughness too as if you have an entire team of smurfs, no matter how fast they are they are one good hit away from roadkill.

Jovo got more than local votes for a few years running.   West Coast back then got so little coverage and fact he was in top 10 two years in a row was an indication of just how good he was.   He was not in Lidstrom's league but either was anyone else.   A healthy Jovo was, however, a legit top 5 to 10 Dman in the NHL over a number of seasons and if he had played in the East, a good bet for more serious Norris consideration.

Ekholm is 6'4", 215 lbs

Subban is 6', 210 lbs

Josi is 6'1", 201 lbs

Ellis is 5'10", 180 lbs

This ridiculousness about small, fast, puck moving defencemen is way overblown. Once in a while a small guy will make an impact...but hockey size is necessary too. Nashville's D can move the puck, but other than Ellis, they are not small. Hell, Even Weber is 5'11", 200 lbs.

It seems to me that headlines about everyone needing the "new breed" of small defencemen outline a problem with lazy journalism. Too many writers are parroting this line of thinking.

True. The best type of defense is one that boasts multiple strengths. Having a d-core built on a bunch of offensively gifted smurfs is just as useful as building a defense of lumbering giants. Both can be exploited.
