[Speculation] Can The Canucks Be For Sale? Or Moved? New Arena?

The arena is old, one of the oldest in the NHL, it will need to be replaced due to age, it would make sense to move it closer to the center of the population of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, it is so difficult to get downtown now a great percentage of fans don't bother.

The new city plan will make getting there much, much harder and has turned the entire area into livable green area for condo's in the area instantly increasing the value of the land and any condo's built on it, sort of like what happened when the Alex Fraser bridge was built, land values skyrocketed on the other side of the river, the new city plan will have the same effect.

The biggest benefactor of the city's new plan is not the Aquilini's, does anyone remember Li Ka-shing? How he was lent 300 mil from the provincial (SC) government to purchase the expo lands for 320 mil. It is noted as the biggest land swindle since the US bought Alaska for 8 mil.

He bought the Expo lands in 1988 for $320 million, to be spread over 15 years. But the real price is generally considered to be about $145 million, in part because the province paid the staggering cost of remediating the soil

Enough past politics.

It would make good business sense for the Aquilini's to move the team to a more central site and build condo's where the arena is. If they wanted to keep the team. It makes even more sense to sell the team and build condos where the land is.

The only reason Surrey and Coquitlam are mentioned are their city councils and land availability combined with good and easy access. Richmond is the wrong direction and difficult for lower mainland access.

Selling the team would get him out from under all the media crucifixion for being a "bad owner", something a lot of fans are being led to think is a good idea and he would make a huge profit there as well.

There would be no name change as the team would still be in the GVRD.

Crime is every where.

There are 6 arenas older in the NHL, However, the many of new arenas were built withing 5 years of each other. I say the Canucks have at least 20 years of their current building. Also building an arena takes at least 5 years. The last thing Vancouver needs is spend on a new arena like like Edmonton an have tax payers pay for it. Calgary may need a new arena first, and also if Seattle is awarded an NHL team they are going to be playing in the oldest arena in the NHL.
Hereis a list of arenas older/built within 5 years of Rogers Arena. Arena's cost a lot of money...a lot of money... A LOT OF MONEY. Even if they sold the land for 2 Billion, you are looking at at least 1 billion for a new arena anywhere on the lower mainland. The Company has money and probably won't be willing to part with their land anytime soon.

As an aside, tearing down the Georgia Viaduct is such a stupid idea. That type of ill-advised idea summates the Roberston-Meggs era of Vancouver in such a perfectly pathetic way.

To hell with those scoundrels.

And that passed city council without contest.  Traffic into and out of the city is a nightmare, how do you think it'll be when those viaducts gets taken down?  They're in it just to erect more condos.

GM Place, Rogers Arena, and Canada Place are the same building:)

wut... are you high?
