Tank the last 5 games (discussion)

Recommended Posts

Well, with 5 games to go before the end of the season, we are looking at a draft position of 5th (0-5) to 12th OA (5-0), so it's a time of what is best for the Vancouver Canuck's hockey club.

Now, no player or coach will ever play to lose, as they play in the now, and would never not try their hardest, it is not in their DNA, and many will be playing for new contracts, where others will be playing for pride. Who would expect a player to shoot wide on a shot, or whiff on a save to let a goal in? What coach would sit his best player on the bench, when a goal is needed? Again, it is not in their DNA.

What is reasonable, is a GM, who is paid to look at the greater picture, and to do what is best for his team, whether that be short term or long term. What is expected of a GM, is to be be able to weigh the pro's and con's, and to act on the best decision of what is best for the club.

Fast forward to these last 5 games, and what is best for the club. Now with this season being such a failure, for what ever reason, a realist would look at these last 5 games and ask, are they important to win? Well, normally one could answer yes, but this season has been a disaster right from the start. The taste of failure is on everyone's tongue, and the bad feelings that have been developed, will not leave quickly, whether we win or lose. It will take awhile. Time will be the best cure.

Now players know hockey, and they understand hockey, and although they would never lay down, they would understand a GM that was looking at the big picture. As a matter of fact, the better players would actually hope that we get a solid draft pick who would help the team. In Pettie's and Hughes's case, they know what is needed, and whom is available. It is not rocket science, and they accept the roster changes that inevitably happen to a lower caliber team. It is a yearly occurrence, and one they have partook in themselves.

So, no one would blame Benning if he were to rest players in the last 5 games. Heck, playoff teams are doing it as we speak! So it is with this in mind, that I suggest Benning act in the best interest of the team, and have top 6 players rotate and rest over the remaining games.

None of these games will crush the players if they lose, nor will 5 losses effect their development. These arguments are mute.

So will Benning force Green's hand................nope!

So which GM makes the necessary moves? Vancouver's or Calgary's? Would you?

after force rotating all our best players, it would become a little obvious we were tanking. I believe the most I would do to force the situation, is ask of green to remind players that they can take a day off if they feel they could benefit from it.

we already have been accused of losing on purpose once this year. Making a mockery of the league will definitely come with a full dose of karma

If they're allowed to bring up Lind/ Lockwood/ Gadjovich from the Taxi Squad with a full roster then that'd be great; might as well give them games to get their feet wet.
For guys like Rafferty and Sautner who are also on the taxi squad I'm more meh, and maybe put in Silovs if it's the 3rd period of a blowout as well.

Have you not seen the history of Vancouver closing out a bad season and ending up winning more games in the last week of the season then the last month costing them usually a top 3 pick, in fact the last two times they picked in the top 3 were Messier years or post Messier years with Burkie.
