What is a player here supposed to do to protect themselves?  It's against the half boards and he's going straight to the puck.

He's supposed to know he's an NHL player, not pee wee and someone's coming to hit him. Gio should know better.

Did you screen cap that? My snnow app doesn't allow any screen grabs at all.

That is not how the league rules work and you know it.  The onus is on the hitter not the aim for the numbers and he had his back turned to Maroon for some time.  Maroon runs straight into Gio, and not from the side.  Maroon should know better.  Now, a roughing call is BS.

Honestly, what specifically should Gio have done?

Absolutely. WTF? Especially someone like Gio? Come on! He's a Euro diver, footballer! Get over it. (not you, but those challenging the notion)

Chipped it up the boards and brace for impact.. like they've done for the last 100 years.

Except it was called roughing, not boarding. Sketchy and bad call imo

Giordano took a quick look around after the hit and then deliberately dropped like a stone. Diver Down.

I’ll have to watch it again to be sure but it didn’t look like he hit him in the numbers, looked to be at about a 45 and seemed a weak call. The fact the ref 2 feet away starting at the hit and letting it go and that it was roughing, not boarding says to me it was a very bad call.

He has every right to swing the puck back around for a reset.  Considering the expiring time, it's a perfectly valid option when you only need to burn a couple more seconds.  It's not like Gio suddenly turns his back on Maroon last moment.

I think all this talk over the last few days on how the leafs found a weakness on Vasilevski on TV absolutely pissed him off and he is now just shutting the door. If the Leafs fail to advance again, Sportsnet should take some blame.

It’s ALL Hrudey’s fault.
