As much as I realise winning games might be important to the players themselves, I'd honestly rather have the draft standing. I just tend to think long term even though a 3 spot difference in the draft isn't exactly a bit difference anyway.

A 3 spot difference in draft standing makes signicantly more different than winning a couple meaningless games after you’re already eliminated.

There's different perspective to the question. Tocchet is undoutly try to set the team up for success next season, that's his job. His system has to be imprinted on all the players hard drive. Drafting on the other hand is looking to the future. If we were a well estabilshed team and roster we could afford to spend time developing but we are neither. A pick at around 10th I doubt will bring an NHL ready player and it's a gamble. If we were picking in the top 5 the answer would likely be obvious, we're not

I think you can set the team up success without compromising draft standing.

Well correct me if I'm wrong but setting up a winning system, enjoying success, mean a fall in the draft order

It’s less about setting up a winning system than it is going balls to the wall to win meaningless games. We don’t need to ride Demko down the stretch or play Quinn 30 minutes a night to make sure we eke out meaningless points. That’s not the same as establishing a system.

Players and coaches play to win any thing less is a bad example. I get your point but the likelihood to draft below 8-10 is slim so is that a major difference, littel to gain and a lot to give up IMO
