SALMON KINGS THIS WEEK FEB 8,2010 "Shootout on Blanshard Street"

By Salmon Kings Booster Club

Victoria hockey fans got full value for their ticket dollars in last week's home series with the Utah Grizzlies. Three consectutive shootouts, stellar goaltending, two penalty "hat tricks", plus moments of joy tinged with some sadness along with a comic moment made for an interesting hockey fan experience. Once the ice had been cleaned after the final shootout, the Salmon Kings over the three games held a slim 12-11 edge along with a 106-100 shot advantage. Even the power plays were close, 4 of 16 for the Grizzlies and 3 of 15 for the Salmon Kings. In the Wednesday opener the Salmon Kings ended the first period with a 3-l lead helped by a Chad Painchaud power play marker and a short handed goal by Olivier Filion. Adam Taylor and Randall Gelech got second period goals but Utah matched that. Midway into the third, Randall Gelech made it 6-4 but goals by Tom May and sniping captain Ryan Kinaeswich tied the game 6-6. As in all games in the series, overtime would solve nothing, thus "the dreaded shootout" was needed. Wes Goldie opened with a goal followed by another by soon to be AHL bound Olivier Latendresse. Utah matched both but after Mike Hamilton scored in the final round, Gle...

Around the League

By jchockey16

On some days when I can't up from bed in time, or even when I do it's hard to be totally aware of things at the moment, I like to read the recap about the Canucks' effort. From I've read, it sounds like Roberto Luongo did his thing and bailed a dis-spirited team in front of him with some big, big saves. It wasn't until the shootout when you could literally win the game by skating as leisurely as you'd like (which is why it'll never fly in the playoffs) did the Canucks pull out with a win with none other than veteran Pavol Demitra. Good thing we have that guy in net, eh?

But anyway, this whole week has really been about players outside of the Canucks organization for once, so, here's a look at the rest of the league, which might be as interesting as the Canucks.

Not really surprising, some say, that in the end it was the New Jersey Devils that ponied up and got the prized Ilya Kovalchuk. So, I guess they weren't surprised when they found out? So why all the hype and speculation before hand? Couldn't they all raise their hands and say "New Jer...

No points for non-Sens

The Vancouver Canucks' motion for a victory was denied by the hot Ottawa Senators near Parliament Hill on Thursday night.

Thanks in large part to the play of sophomore goaltender Brian Elliot and center Jason Spezza, Ottawa extended it's team record winning streak to 11 games, defeating the Canucks 3-1. Elliot may have lost the shutout bid with 99 seconds remaining, but he beat his own team record with his ninth straight win. Captain Daniel Alfredsson netted three assists during the victory, while Jason Spezza extended his goal scoring streak to six games. "Ells (Brian Elliot) has been phenomenal, there's not enough we can say about how well he's played," noted Spezza. "He just keeps it going and it seems like ...

It's a long way to the top

By Andrew Bucholtz

(You can view the original post with videos here).

The Canucks have been one of the league's hottest teams recently, led in particular by stellar play from the Sedin twins and Alex Burrows. Henrik Sedin continues to make his case as a Hart Trophy candidate, and the team's also getting extremely solid performances from the likes of Christian Ehrhoff and Alex Edler despite an injury-plagued defensive corps. When things are going this well, teams just seem to find a way to win; despite falliing behind 3-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first period of the first game of a brutal road trip Saturday and pulling Roberto Luongo, the Canucks clawed their way back with Andrew Raycroft in net, preventing Toronto from scoring another goal and notching five...

Antler Banter - Volume 14

By Teebz

The Moose return home from an east coast roadtrip that saw them stop in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania with less than stellar results. However, with the number of players that have been shuffled through the Moose dressing room this season, it could almost pass as a hostel for hockey players as players travel between leagues and cities. There was more player movement this week as the Moose continue to piece together a semi-permanent lineup, so we'll take a look at the new arrivals and departures. For all of your Manitoba Moose news and information, don't forget to check out the Moose website. If you're interested in attending a Manitoba Moose game, please click here for seating information, ticket pricing, and availability. Let's see if the Moose can get back to playing Hardcore Hockey!

With four games to include on this week's Antler Banter, I'm going to run through each one quickly. I do...

SALMON KINGS THIS WEEK FEB 3,2010

By Salmon Kings Booster Club

After the split in Bakersfield and a vist to Universal Studios, the Victoria Salmon Kings prepared to finish their January trip to California with three games in Stockton. In the opener on Wed, Jan 27, despite holding a one shot advantage, and having outshot the Stockton Thunder in the first and the third, the result was not positive. Two Thunder goals in the first followed by four in the second led to a 7-3 Stockton win. For Victoria, the main item was another Wes Goldie hat trick, which now put him at 28 goals for the season. Two injures that have resulted in Scott Howes and Dirk Southern to be out for an extended period, plus Brandon Roach on bereavement leave meant that the Salmon Kings played the Fri, Jan 29 game with 14 skaters (9 fwds, 5 def). Prior to the game the AHL Abbotsord Heat chose to do a goalie move, and recalled David Shantz while at the same team assigning highly touted Leland Irving to the Salmon Kings. Once again the Salmon Kings had a shot advantage overall and in the first and third as on Wednesday. Going into the second with the score tied 1-1, the Thunder struck for 5 goals in 15 shots, one more in the third made it a 7-1 victory. JF Caudron of the Thunder had a five point ...

The Price is Halak

By jchockey16

It may have well been the Vancouver Canucks vs. Jaroslav Halak last night. If there was any question of which young goalie La Belle Province liked better, the Slovakian netminder made 45 saves in a 3-2 win. Jacques Martin decided to not start British Columbia native Carey Price amidst rumours of locker room drama, sitting him for the fifth time in their last six games in which the Habs have gone a rather pedestrian 2-2-1. Halak improves to 15-8-2 and is making a strong push to be Slovakia's starter at the Olympics, supplanting Colorado backup Peter Budaj. However, I don't think this game was won and lost in the goaltending department, although it certainly gave Montreal an edge.

The Canucks were atrocious in the circle, going only 20-for-54 the entire night. Ryan Kesler, despite his blue-collar goal to pull the Canucks within one, was uncharacteristically awful, winning just 6 of 21. Henrik Sedin and Kyle Wellwood were both below average, while on the other end of the spectrum, Tomas Plekanec won 17 of 25 and Scott Gomez won 9 of 16. For whatever reason, the Canucks couldn't gain control of the puck for long periods throughout the night. They have to win the little battles if they wan...

THE GOAL--A background dossier

By Salmon Kings Booster Club

Three players with experience with the China Sharks, Saint John Seadogs and the Lincoln Stars combined on a goal that has become an internet sensation. The dazzling skills have had fans buzzzing about what they saw. An alert camerman caught the goal on tape and somehow it was quickly forwarded to TSN who then made it as the TSN Sports Centre's Highlight of the Night. Left winger Scott Howes played Jr A with the OPJHL Wexford Raiders but was overlooked by the OHL. An oppurtunity to cross the provincial border led to him making the QMHJL Drummondville Voltiguers as "a walkon." He had 25 goals and a produced at close to a point per game pace. Early in his junior "overage" season, he was traded to the Saint John Sea Dogs. By sesaons end he helped with 76 points in 66 games, and an eye popping 26 points (15 goals) in 14 playoff goals. This earned him a spot at the AHL Manitoba Moose training camp. Five games into 2008-09 Howes was sent to Victoria. He got 22 points (10 goals) in 39 games. A skilled winger with speed, his dazzling skill set led to the pass that resulted in The Goal. Normally a centre, Dirk Southern was The Goal Line right winger. His route to professinal hocke...
