Chimon
2013 VHL Final Rankings (#1-10) 1. Curtis Lazar Age: 18 POB: Vernon, BC Position: C, RW Team: Tri-City Americans (WHL) Height: 6’1” Weight: 189 lbs Mid-Term Ranking: #1 2012-13: 39-34-35-69, +28 (Edmonton Oil Kings) 2012-13: 29-39-36-75, +36 Has held on to the no. 1 spot the entire year and is by all means the consensus #1 overall pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft. The Oil Kings must be kicking themselves now as Lazar produced even better numbers with the Americans. Lazar has boundless offensive talent and the sky is the limit for the youngster. Has the size and skill to be NHL-ready right out of the Draft, but is only mediocre in his own end. Projected Career Role: Skilled forward, 1st line potential Player comparisons: Evgeni Malkin, Eric Staal 2. Alex Forsberg Age: 18 POB: Waldheim, SK Position: C Team: Victoria Royals (WHL) Height: 5’11” Weight: 178 lbs Mid-Term Ranking: #2 2012-13: 36-39-48-87 , +38 (Prince George) 2012-13: 29-21-36-57, +23 Slowed down a little bit (if you can even call it that) in the second half of the season after being dealt to Victoria from Prince George. Doesn’t possess the same premier offensive abilities as Lazar but is a more well-rounded player who can play at both ends of the rink. Will need to continue to work on his strength and balance because of his size, but the talent is there for Forsberg to be an impact player in the NHL. Projected Career Role: Two-way forward, top-6 line potential Player comparisons: Derek Roy 3. Nathan Mackinnon Age: 17 POB: Dartmouth, NS Position: RW, C Team: Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) Height: 6’0” Weight: 187 lbs Mid-Term Ranking: #3 2012-13: 64-40-73-113, +41 Another brilliant offensive forward with sky-high potential. Can shoot and pass with the best of them and has the creativity to pull fans out of their seats. Hockey sense and skating still needs improvement, but has certainly improved on the defensive side of the puck. Still a year or two away from NHL duty but could have the highest potential in the long-run. Projected Career Role: Skilled offensive forward, 1st line potential Player comparisons: Jeff Carter, Marian Hossa 4. Sean Monahan Age: 18 POB: Ottawa, ON Position: C Team: Ottawa 67’s (OHL) Height: 6’3” Weight: 196 lbs Midterm Ranking: #5 2012-13: 68-43-45-88 , +22 Stats aren’t exactly on Monahan’s side as the 3rd year-CHLer only put up 16 more points this year than last season (though 10 of them were goals). Despite that, Monahan has the size, strength, and hockey smarts for centres that will captivate scouts and GMs alike. Offensively, his skills are a little behind MacKinnon, Forsberg and Lazar and will need at least 2 more years before he could see action in the NHL. Projected Career Role: Offensive forward, top-6 potential Player comparisons: David Krejci 5. Jeremy Gregoire Age: 17 POB: Sherbrooke, QC Position: C Team: Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL) Height: 6’1” Weight: 191 lbs Midterm Ranking: #6 2012-13: 68-47-70-117, +43 Despite being the highest scoring player in this year’s Entry Draft, some scouts still doubt the NHL scoring upside of Gregoire and a few project him to be more of a checking line centre in the NHL. This may not be that bad as Gregoire is fantastically gifted defensively, leading all forwards in the QMJHL in takeaways by a landslide (87), and only 3 giveaways. Gregoire will undoubtedly wear a letter in the NHL regardless of his role as he is a complete team player and leader. Projected Career Role: Skilled forward, top-9 potential Player comparisons: Mikko Koivu 6. Hunter Shinkaruk Age: 18 POB: Calgary, AB Position: LW Team: Prince George Cougars Height: 5’10” Weight: 174 lbs Midterm Ranking: #17 2012-13: 61-34-35-69, +7 Made one of the biggest jumps this season in the ranking, going up 11 spots. Shinkaruk has a blistering shot and is equally quick on his skates, often leaving opposing defencemen flat-footed. The major knock on Shinkaruk is his size, as not every player can be the next Patrick Kane or Martin St. Louis. Scouts have raved about Shinkaruk’s work ethic and determination on and off the ice and believe that he is a classic example of a top-6-or-bust type player. Projected Career Role: Skilled two-way forward, top-6 potential Player comparisons: Guillaume Latendresse 7. Alexander Barkov Age: 17 POB: Tampere, FIN Position: C Team: Tampereen Tappara (SM-Liiga) Height: 6’4” Weight: 200 lbs 2012-13: 8-4-14-18, +9 (FIN-Jr) 2012-13: 30-17-15-32, -1 Torched the junior ranks and then proceeded to shock everyone by putting up incredible numbers in the Finnish Elite League. Listed at 6’4 and 200 lbs, Barkov is NHL-ready given his experience playing against men. He likely won’t pan out to be big goal-scorer at the NHL level, but his playmaking ability has already drawn comparisons to that of Henrik Sedin and Joe Thornton. Barkov has one of the best hand-eye coordination at his level of play and his size doesn’t limit his ability to find open space on the ice. Could surprise GMs and scouts once more by challenging for a top-3 spot in the Entry Draft. Projected Career Role: Skilled forward, 1st line potential Player comparisons: Patrice Bergeron, Henrik Sedin, Joe Thorton 8. Max Domi Age: 17 POB: Don Mills, ON Position: C Team: Kingston Frontenacs (QMJHL) Height: 5’11” Weight: 183 lbs Midterm Rankings: #10 2012-13: 68-34-55-89, +16 One of the safest picks on the top-10. Domi plays a solid 2-way game and is almost specialist at faceoffs. Has a decent shot and skating ability to possibly be a top-6 forward in the NHL some day. Not afraid to take or dish out hits for the team. Domi is a hard worker on and off the ice but will need to improve his conditioning. Projected Career Role: Skilled forward, top-6 potential Player comparisons: Olli Jokinen 9. Seth Jones Age: 18 POB: Plano, TX Position: D Team: Michigan Wolverines (NCAA) Height: 6’5” Weight: 211 lbs Midterm Ranking: 7 2012-13: 46-9-37-46, +7 A two-way defenceman with almost scary size. He is one of strongest players in this year’s draft class, but is an exceptionally agile skater for his size. Jones reads the plays in front of him well and is a very determined team player. His scoring potential in the NHL may be a little limited (He doesn’t have the best shot even with the size) but he could still be one mean shutdown defenceman. The best blueliner in this draft by far. Projected Career Role: Skilled defenceman, #1-2 potential Player comparisons: Fedor Tyutin, Erik Johnson 10. Hudson Fasching Age: 17 POB: Burnsville, MN Position: RW/C Team: US NTDP Height: 6’4” Weight: 189 lbs 2012-13: 60-32-34-66, +6 Gives absolutely everything and rarely takes shifts off – Will definitely be a captain or alternate captain in the future. Fasching is a pure power forward with tremendous wheels, but his sometimes lackadaisical effort on the back-check have some scouts grimacing. Projected Career Role: Skilled forward, top-6 potential Player comparisons: David Jones
