Look at the bright-side, folks: there's nowhere to go but UP after Spiderman 3.

Hopefully people realize this is the amazing spiderman vs. just spiderman. Not sure which one the old ones origin from but they both are from two different versions with two different stories. I believe all the same characters but just a different order of events as well as some totally different events.

Many people expected this story to be closer to the original. In some ways, Spider-Man 3 retconned a lot of the origin story from the first film, such as when the Sandman actually being the one responsible for Uncle Ben's death. Organic web shooters were also an issue for some fans.

In terms of the Amazing Spider-Man name, this is certainly a new universe and a completely different continuity from the other fans. However, the comics from the original, mainstream timeline are called The Amazing Spider-Man, first published in 1963. This would have led many to believe the story would have been a more faithful depiction of Spidey's origin.

Spider-Man 2 was actually originally going to be titled The Amazing Spider-Man; that film did a very nice job telling the "Spider-Man No More" story arc from the comics. It's still one of my favorite comic book films.

There are many alternate universes in the Marvel canon, including Ultimate Spider-Man, which is perhaps the most successful of the alternate universe publications. It appears as though this new film is actually closer to the Ultimate Spider-Man series. That series was a modernized reboot of the original story. Perhaps there are parallels to the rebooting of both the comics and films.
