[Signing] Shea Weber to Flyers (OFFERSHEET)

Recommended Posts

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile issued the following statement this morning:

“We are in receipt of the offer sheet signed between the Philadelphia Flyers and Shea Weber. Under the rules pertaining to an offer sheet, the Predators have one week to decide whether to match or accept the compensation. We have stated previously that, should a team enter into an offer sheet with Shea, our intention would be to match and retain Shea. Our ownership has provided us with the necessary resources to build a Stanley Cup-winning team. Due to the complexity of the offer sheet, we will take the appropriate time to review and evaluate it and all of its ramifications in order to make the best decision for the Predators in both the short and long-term.

“We do not anticipate any further comments on this situation until we make our decision within the next seven days.”

Anyone remember the Oilers offersheet to Vanek back in 07? Would have cost the Oilers 4 first round picks. Granted, their performance would have been affected, but just for amusement sake, it would have been:

2008 - Jordan Eberle

2009 - Magnus Paajarvi

2010 - Taylor Hall

2011 - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Didn't Kesler sign an offer sheet a few years ago? We matched and it didn't seemto hurt this production or harm the fan base here.I do agree that Nashville should let him walk and as much as it sucks for a team just coming out of a rebuild but use those picks to restart a rebuild. With the amount of young talent they already have and the # of 1st round picks they would get they could rival the Oilers in a few years in terms of top young talent.

No, but would Vanek have improved their position that much? They still would have been struggling to make playoffs, and would likely have been in a Calgary like situation, AND would have missed out on all of the promising talent that they are currently stacked with.

Nash has to accept it. They can't lose another star. They can actually keep him this time. The owner will put his foot down and accept the deal and there will be no more Phillly and Nash trades. I also heard on TSN that four teams were in the mix for a trade, of course the Canucks weren't one. What are you doing MG?

Answering a couple of questions: yes, there is a way NSH/PHI could trade if Preds decided not to match -- it involves the draft picks.

In 1995, STL signed Shayne Corson to an offer sheet. EDM traded back the picks for Curtis Joseph and Mike Grier.

In 1997, Flyers signed Chris Gratton from Tampa, then traded Mikael Renberg and Karl Dykhuis to reacquire the picks.

Weber/Philly has forced everyone's hand.

1.) Nashville matches this reasonable offer.

2.) After matching, Poile will talk to Weber and ask him if he wants to stay a Predator. If the answer is "no", then Poile calls Philly and they are asked if they would like to trade for Weber.

3.) Philly, assuming they still want Weber, will trade *more* for Weber than four 1st rounders. If Philly doesn't bite, some other team will. If no other team wants to pay Nashville's asking price, Weber stays a Pred.

regards,

G.
