Smith, 23, is entering the final season of a two-year, $1.43 million deal. Under the expiring collective bargaining agreement he would have been a restricted free agent at the end of the deal. Smith notched 14 goals and 22 assists in 72 games as a rookie for the Predators in 2011-12. “This is a leap of faith, obviously we’re taking his salary up to a significant level after the season. We’re betting that he’s going to be one of our best offensive players,” Predators General Manager David Poile said. “He has only played one year in the league, but he and Colin Wilson, two young forwards represent for us an area in offense to turn it up a notch” Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
