I did not end up seeing nearly as many movies as I wanted to in 2012, as in a disappointingly low amount, I usually see as many as possible. I was really busy this year so most of the movies I ended up seeing were big budget blockbusters. This list will be subject to change after I catch up on all the stuff I missed.

1. Wreck-it Ralph (I'm essentially a grown man, and this has become one of my favourite movies ever.)
2. Django Unchained (What can I say, Tarantino has done it again.)
3. Argo (Really good, even though you know how it'll turn out. Ben Affleck is proving to be a really good director.)
4. The Avengers (It's a popcorn movie that's just for fun. Nothing cerebral or deep. But its so, so much fun. Its just a really entertaining movie. When it comes to turning off your brain and being entertained for 2 hours, I don't think it can be beat)
5.Life of Pi (well adapted, and the cinematography is absolutely stunning.)
6. Skyfall ( Took Bond to a whole new level. Casino Royale was good, but this really seemed to stand on it's own. It didn't follow the conventional Bond formula. It took risks and they paid off.)

That's basically it so far. The other ones that I did end up seeing either sucked or weren't worth mentioning.

Only saw TDKR in theaters this year good but the worst of the series in my opinion. I saw the hunger games on Netflix twas pretty good. I found it true to the book but I was disappointed in the lack of gore and the mutts were a disappointment

The rest of your list is garbage - but I did just see End of Watch and thought it was fantastic.

I actually got to watch 53 movies last year (I attend a lot of advance screenings - I actually paid for 10 movies last year), but I still missed out on Django Unchained, Les Miserable and Life of Pi... so those 3 could crack my list.

Top Comedies of the Year
1. Ted
2. This Is 40
3. Project X
Honourable mentions: This Means War, American Reunion, 21 Jump Street, Seven Psychopaths

Top Action/Thriller Movies of the Year
1. The Dark Knight Rises
2. Skyfall
3. The Avengers
Honourable mentions: Chronicle, Looper

Top Animation Movie of the Year
1. Wreck-It Ralph (That's all that matters)

Top Drama Movies of the Year
1. Argo
2. Silver Linings Playbook
3. End of Watch
Honourable mentions: The Impossible, Jack Reacher

Top Horror Movie of the Year
Cabin in the Woods

I think people are getting a bit defensive on these lists. Obviously everyone has different taste and we aren't talking about Oscar-worthy movies - just movies we enjoyed.

didn't see enough movies this year to make a list worth reading.

django was super weird and incredible. moonrise kingdom was pretty and interesting and fun. i kinda enjoyed the dark night rises. i liked safety not guaranteed a lot, probably mostly due to really liking aubrey plaza in it and in general.

the hobbit was visually impressive, but i found it really boring and kinda hated it. dark shadows was so bad i almost barfed.

those are all the movies i remember.

Only movies that stood out for me this year. Didn't watch enough Disney/Pixar movies this year. I hear Reck it Ralph and Brave were good. Didn't like the Dark Knight nor Life of Pi. Also haven't watched Looper. Honorable mention to Goon as it will be a canadian classic.

Just watched it earlier today to see what the big hubbub was about.
Average movie at best. Super cheesy and a boring storyline, with some decent action.
Reminded me of Transformers, but not quite as bad as Transformers 2 was.

If you replaced the characters with new superheroes people had no prior attachment to, not nearly as many people would like it.

I've tried 3-4 times now to make a top ten list, with no success. I don't think 2012 has been a great year for film. Movies I've seen:

The Avengers
Hunger Games
The Dark Knight Rises
Ted
Cabin in the Woods
That Resident Evil movie (not by choice)
Almost 40
Flight
Looper
SkyFall
Pitch Perfect
Bourne Legacy
21 Jump Street

Of all those movies, the only one I think I really really liked was Ted, yet I could never name 'Ted' the greatest movie of 2012.

Movies I have yet to see but expect to be better than those named above:

Argo
Lincoln (Daniel Day Lewis never disappoints)
Django Unchained
Zero Dark Thirty

OMG we could've had McKeown!

I think Virtanen was a terrible pick given that he's out for 6 months which will hinder his development. You don't pick someone at #6 under that circumstance, along with the fact that he was given a 3/5 IQ (aka he's dumb).

God dammit Benning. WHY VIRTANEN? Terrible move.

Down by the River - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Like I said before, it's a popcorn movie that is not meant to be taken seriously. It's all about fun. I thought the Dark Knight Rises was bad but I don't belittle everyone who liked it. You've whined so much about it in this thread, whats your vendetta against it? Did Joss Whedon kick your puppy or something?

Also, where is your list so we can nitpick it apart?

Lets just pretend I used twice the number of silly emoticons you did.

And no I'm not being sarcastic but you are presuming that I'm saying avengers was good. Avengers was ok, typical popcorn movie and it was made like one. DKR seemed like it was trying to be something it couldn't be...a good movie with a meaning. I say again that Avengers was better than Dark Knight Rises but that doesn't mean either was a great movie.

Really though arguing about it is silly because what we like is subjective. I mostly just thought your multiple posts about how people shouldn't like something because you didn't like it was...well...stupid.

I guess this whole post could be boiled down to just telling you to stop acting like some hipster baby.

arguing about subjective things is silly?

you should know full well that saying "the dark knight rises pretends to have meaning, but doesn't, and therefore the avengers is better because it doesn't even try" is a controversial opinion, and pretty damn hipster-ish in itself. but then again, using the word 'hipster' in any context should be avoided at all costs, because in subjective conversation (especially online), every person is someone else's hipster

on a semi-related note--and not necessarily a criticism of the exchange between Employee and Armada--i wish CDC users were better at discussing the arts without getting so offended if their taste is put on trial. yes, it's all subjective, but opinion on subjective matters can really be interesting, if those opinions are backed up with substance and critical thinking. god forbid someone begins to re-evulate how they read, hear, play, or view their escapism of choice!

personally, i thought TDKR was good for what it was (imo, my idea of a "good" popcorn movie should have meaning, or at least try to have meaning), whereas i can't even bring myself to watch The Avengers.

That's the thing though. The Avengers is pure entertainment. It knows the idea of super-powered people fighting aliens in New York is silly, and it plays to that.

The Dark Knight Rises tried to be dark and deep, but it just fell flat on it's face. I'd rather watch something fun and entertaining than a big budget action movie (the action wasn't even very good) that tried to be cerebral and failed. The plot was stupid, the acting was inconsistent, and the dialogue was horrendous.

I think expectations play a huge part in this debate as well. The only previous Marvel movie I really liked was the first Iron-man (Norton's Hulk was just OK), while The Dark Knight is almost a perfect movie IMO. So when my gf dragged me to The Avengers and it wasn't dog crap I was really impressed. Meanwhile The Dark knight Rises, while probably the better movie in retrospect, left me feeling pretty disappointed that it didn't live up to the hype.

And you're spot on about the plot and dialogue being the major flaws of TDKR. Just like with Prometheus the movie was gorgeous and the set pieces were spectacular, but man did those script writers crap the bed.

A lot of stuff I haven't seen but I'll put together a list anyways:

1. Django Unchained
2. Moonrise Kingdom
3. Beasts of the Southern Wild
4. Killing Them Softly
5. The Avengers
6. Dark Knight Rises
7. Hunger Games
8. 21 Jump Street

Can't remember seeing anything else that wasn't terrible. Pretty strong year for film I'd say, definitely better than last year.

Also, has anyone seen Holy Motors? I've heard its really good but I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet.

I thought Moonrise Kingdom was one of the worst movies of the year. Couldn't get through 30 mins of it. My family was laughing on how highly rated it was. On the other hand we just finished watching Pitcher Perfect and I thought it was actually pretty good. A lot better than I thought it was going to be.

I'm slightly annoyed by you. You do nothing but disparage the movie and the people who liked it, without bringing up any actual arguments. Then when someone makes a legitimate counterpoint you just go "hurr durr you all suck. Stop liking what I don't like".

You strike me as the type of person who doesn't like it because it makes you feel like a special little snowflake, and you want everyone to pay attention to you. It makes sense considering how many times you've posted some banal comment about the Avengers or those who liked it, without raising any actual point as to why you don't like it. You're not even discussing movies, you're just casually throwing dumb insults because not everyone shares your opinion.

Or, more likely, you're a troll.
