Where are we in the draft?

The best pick the Canucks can get is the 21st pick. The only way this happens is if both Pits and Chicago get knocked out this round. The first 2 rounds are grouped together for sorting, and being a divisional winner matters.

So say both Pits and Chicago lose then it will go like this:

30-26th picks: 4 teams in the conf finals

25th: Chicago

24th: Pittsburgh

23rd: Anahiem

22nd: Montreal

21st: Vancouver

20th: Washington

Now if Pitts and Chicago both advance then the Canucks pick 23rd, only one advances then they pick 22nd.

So our worst pick is 23rd, our best pick is 21st.

We have a very good chance to get the 20th pick IMO. San Jose has a good chance of beating LA, Rangers could beat the Bruins, and if Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Howard show up Detroit could upset Chicago.

Divisional winners can't pick better than 21st.

That's incorrect. The final 4 teams get the last 4 picks, then come the division winners. The Canucks will be in that second group.

Losing early vs. the 2nd round has no effect on the order.

This is exactly right, and this is why divisional winner can do no better than 21. Since Washington has fewer points than Vancouver, Canucks can do no better than 22.

I used to think so too, until I found this on NHL.com...

There's no mention of the final 4 teams, just the Stanley Cup champion getting the final pick.

Maybe this is new this year ? Because if this was the case, Canucks would have picked 29th last draft, but they picked 26th which is where the final 4 then division winners format was used.

I think so. New CBA, new draft rules?

I don't remember there being anything about division winners in the past.

This was posted earlier in this thread. And it makes sense if you look at the Canucks drafting in the last 2 years. Last year 26, year before 29.

Depends on division winners who don't make the conference finals. Canucks could finish anywhere from 22-25 based on Montreal already being eliminated and them being a division winner with more points than the Canucks.

From Wikipedia.... http://en.wikipedia....NHL_Entry_Draft - Selection Order and Draft Lottery.....

"At the conclusion of the regular season, the 14 NHL teams not qualifying for the playoffs are entered in a weighted lottery to determine the initial draft picks in the first round, seeded according to regular season standing. The 30th-place team has the best chance of winning the lottery while the 29th-place team has a 18.8% chance of winning, with odds diminishing to a 0.5% chance for the 17th-place team. A single selection from the lottery pool is made, with the winning team improving its draft position to the number 1 spot, and no team dropping more than one place.

The remaining order is determined by the Stanley Cup playoff results.[8] Whichever team wins the Stanley Cup is awarded the 30th and last pick, while the runner-up is given the 29th pick. The teams eliminated in the conference finals are awarded the 28th and 27th picks, with the 28th pick going to the team with the better regular season record. Remaining division winners are then sorted by points, then the rest of the field are ranked next, filling in the 26th through 15th picks. In both cases, better records result in later picks.[6] "

that was last updated on monday. we are drafting 23rd this year. I for one am happy about that. Why you ask? 10 years ago at the draft the Canucks held the 23rd spot, and who did we pick? Ryan Kesler. So sure, we may be picking kinda late as usual, but you never know, whoever we pick may turn out to be something special.

That also has Chicago picking 30 and Pittsburgh picking 29. Do they already know Chicago will beat Pittsburgh in the finals ?
