[Discussion] What Would it Take to Trade Up to the #3 Pick?

Is there really any need? A good D man will be at the Canucks spot so unless it is what they need in a center they should just sit on it, this draft is much better than last years.

I agree, there really isn't much point in trying to move up at all unless Benning has secret information.    Two or three top tier defenseman could still be available, the best center (s) will be on the board still, and maybe a guy like Whalstrom too.

Only for this guy, maybe, Andrei Svechnikov.

Probably somewhere around 7th + Tanev + Gaudette which is probably a respectable price for Svechnikov but not one I really want to make given the depth of the top 10.

Once again. Tanev does not address either of Montreal’s biggest needs. Throwing him into proposals doesn’t add to the value to them.  Unless they’re getting a young puck moving RHD or a  1C/2C then they’re better off taking the BPA with their pic.

No way we are trading anything to move up.  Why would we give up assets to select a player, who will likely be worse (at 22) than the guy we draft at 7?  Dahlin is over hyped, and his game might not even transfer to NA ice.  Svechnikov has that whole, run back to Russia, thing potential.  And is Zadina any better than Wolstram?  No, we stay at 7, or trade down, if a team like the Oilers want to switch 7 for 10, while adding a stalled prospect like Poolparty.

Likely be worse? How do you figure?  Potentially? Sure.  We’re talking about 18 year old kids here.  Anything can happen.

But LIKELY?  You’re reaching.

Montreal atays whete they are unless someone offers up an enticing offer.

No one trades from inside top 10 to move up to three.  This draft is very flat from 2 down to 10.

Either Tanev and Gaudette and maybe Stecher/Pouliot, maybe a 2nd round pick or two but not all and only for this kid and retain their own first.

But they need centers as well.

Fringe NHLers who can't crack line-ups run back to Russia. Top 3 picks and possible all-stars don't.

None of those pieces address Montreal's needs

What are talking coaches?

Veteran top 4 dman, 2 young dmen, a young center. 3 players that can and have played in the NHL, one of which is a top 4 RH dman and a NHL ready prospect.

What are Montreal's needs if not NHL players? Taveras maybe.

Scoring.  Montreal needs scoring. They have a glut of middle 6 forwards and bottom 4 D. They need top line talent.  A young puck moving RHD, a 1C.

Theyre set set on the right D side with Weber and Petry. So that eliminates any interest in a Tanev. Stretcher and Pouliot are just more of what they already have. Gaudette is the only piece of interest. And it’s too early to project his ceiling.

Canucks can keep Tanev, Pouliot/sketcher.  If its 7, Gaudette and 2018 2nd (and maybe more). Then Maybe. Then it would be because they’re more interested in Veleno or Kokineimi than whoever is left at 3.

If you can' get more scoring then the team reduces goals against, "the team that wins the Vezina, wins the Cup" used to be true. Price was lit up with the current defence often having to make secondary saves, that is one thing that Tanev is very good at, blocking or taking the second shot away.

Saving 30 goals against is much the same as scoring an additional 30, only more of a surety, good defence stays good defence, goal scoring can run up against a hot goalie.

As I already pointed out. Montreal is set on the right side with Weber and Petry. Tanev has no spot in their top 4 if they did change their D around to accommodate him They’d likely  get what. Maybe 50 games out of him.  The rest of the time they have to scramble to fill holes in his absence.  Also. Price struggled last year. I firmly believe there was an undisclosed injury. Niemi and Lindgren put up solid numbers behind the same defence.  So your arguement holds no water.  They need top level scoring. Period. They can get that with their 3rd overall pick.
