[Discussion] 2019 draft the time is now

Recommended Posts

A team can really only move in a couple young guys at a time.  The problem has been that we generally have only had one good young guy to bring a long at a time.  You just aren't going to have a team with five or six rookies on it particularly with Linden and Benning running the show.

Brock was the guy last year and Pouliot to a lesser extent.

Stecher and Hutton before that.

Bo before that.

This year Petterson and Gaudette or Goldobin will probably be it unless a D man pushes out a vet.

Next year we are looking at a Hughes or two and OJ and maybe some of those great young wingers can start to force their way onto the team.

I have no problem with surrounding your guys with vets.  At some point though I question which vets and how many and for how long.

I think this year when we struggle we will see more of a willingness to move some of the veteran or young veteran pieces.  Just not sure I have great faith in Benning's ability to generate a market/value.

These are not terribly progressive thinkers we are working with, but it easy to sit on this side of the keyboard and criticize.

The OP brings up a valid point if you can decipher it, we now have a burgeoning number of prospects who will be starting mostly in the AHL, with some that could challenge for a spots this year (Dahlen, Gaudette, Hughes), one lock in Pettersson, and a pile of fringe 2-4 liners in Leipsic, Boucher, Goldobin, JV, Granlund etc.   Next year it's time to unload some redundant vets to both make space for these guys after a year in the A, at the top of the list is Sutter given he's redundant in a huge way with Beagle signed and three centers waiting on the wings, not far off are one of either Edler or Tanev (we don't need both, especially if what management says about Huttons all but certain resurgence is true).   With the draft in Vancouver it would be great if this year we are NYI (this years winner according to THN at the draft, ranked A+, we got a B BTW, ranked 12 even though we picked 7, in other words we slipped 5 spots given where we should have been, part in due to not having our 4th, part in due to who we could have picked that was available, of course in five years we could move way up in a re-draft).

Theres lots of promise in the horizon but it's doubtful we have enough high end players, we need more picks and this time Benning would be wise to pull the plug and unload what we can and just play the youth we have that's ready.  Trading Sutter and one of Edler or Tanev will open up two more spots, if Goldobin and or Leipsic don't work out we should cut bait on them too and give someone else a chance to prove they belong in this league.

I think management has been over this many a time. A blow it all up rebuild doesn't work and a team has to have, at least, an appearance of being competitive. The young players can't develop properly in a losing environment. We have been drafting to the best of our ability for the last couple of years but if you don't like our positioning in them, blame the lottery.

Who have they been fooling? They have been god awful for three years. 25 teams score more goals than they do, 25 teams allow less goals than they do. With just a little "planning" the Nucks could have been drafting #4 in 2016, #5 in 2017, #3 in 2018, not as much of a difference as the players this team missed and selected.

The draft lottery makes a mockery of what the draft was intended to do, sure it was to prevent a team tanking but that is easily achieved by using a 3 year average standings with conditions of how many top 1, 2 or 3 picks are allowed. It is simple, easy to determine and transparent. It is possible that it may open up more trades because a team's draft position would be known earlier.

2019 Hughes has been ranked #1 already but the 2020 draft could have the really big superstar coming up, Alexis Lafreniere, at 15/16, already listed at 6' and 180 lbs, playing for Rimouski Oceanic, he lit it up and led the team with 42 goals and 80 points in 60 games. At 15!

He can be expected to fill out to 6'2" to 6'3" and around 200+ lbs, he is a center!

Now his draft year could be a labour dispute year and the draft rules will likely be changed BUT a bad year in the 2019/2020 season could result in this player being available to a 2019/2020 bottom team. No doubt Montreal and Ottawa are very much aware of this French speaking kid and any draft rules that may change. Maybe they will tank for two more years to insure better odds/chance to get this kid.

Crosby out scored him as a 16/17 year old, he will be someone to keep an eye on next year to see if there is any comparison.

The team could be set up pretty good for targeting this kid, this year is the hang over and adjustment from the Sedins and the following year an large number of very young players/prospects to evaluate. If you take the idea that they are only into year one of a rebuild then two more years of being really bad are reasonable.

Here we go again with the " Trade everyone, let's acquire 25 draft picks!!!"

When are people going to realize we have a 50 contract limit?  Even if you draft an infinite number of prospect, you can't get them all under contracts.   We also have limited human resources (trainers, coach, staff) to follow each prospects' development.  If you have too many, they'll only be lost in the system and we'll end up losing some good prospect due to lack of development resources put into each one.

Plus I think the Islanders, Carolina, Oilers, Arizona proved well enough that you can have as many draft picks as you want, it doesn't guarantee success.   You need a culture to develop these guys, talent alone won't cut it.

I think we are on the upswing of this rebuild, and with JB's drafting abilities, he doesn't need 25 drafts picks to keep adding to this core, 7-8 is more than enough.   It's a slow process, we have to stick to it and not rush anything.

No buddy is asking for 25 picks but 2 or three in the first round would be nice

Kind of funny reading the posts in this thread ,quite a few mocking the idea of trading the last of the vets and their mounting injuries  to try and add 2-3 more picks or even take a shot at Hughes brother which IMO would be franchise defining .Its funny because the rumour is the brass is split on exactly that. The NHL is changing and the more of the new type of player the Canucks can draft the faster they will rise.
