A physical two-way defenceman that plays a structured competitive game. Smooth skating complements his ability to control the puck at higher speeds. Displays a pretty hard shot and crisp tape-to-tape passing ability, but is actually relied on more in the defensive zone. Battles very hard for puck possession and sees the game in lanes. Very strong positionally and is poised in his own end. As he continues to grow, he will become a more well-rounded defenceman with each game, as he recognizes and learns from his mistakes. Can play long shifts. [EP]

Canada’s junior hopefuls dropped a 5-1 decision to the U SPORTS all-stars Friday afternoon in the finale at Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp.

Despite the final score, Michael DiPietro (Amherstburg, Ont./Ottawa, OHL) – who tended goal for U SPORTS – was the story. He turned away 32 of the 33 shots he faced and made a number of key saves, including a massive sprawling stop in the second period to preserve the lead after Tippett had pulled Canada within one.

I was there and he played well! One of the weirdest game I cheer as I will be cheering for the Canadian skaters but the Usport goalie this game haha.

Going to watch the Hughes Bros on the 22 in Langley. Can’t wait. I feel very unpatriotic this year being more excited to see USA than Canada. Crap. I typically love to hate the US and love the rivalry. But to see them up close for cheap - couldn’t pass it up.

Have fun! I will be watching Sweden vs. USA game on December 29th. Hughes vs. Boqvist.

I'm a little behind in my Jett Woo knowledge. If you had to compare him to an NHL player's style of play, who would it be?

A lot of people here compares him with Kevin Bieksa. But from highlight videos and reports I read, I could see him also playing like Dustin Byfuglien (style wise).

So they hand(intoxicated) Neal keys to drive the limo home?

1 great move, followed by a gaffe.

    GM gigs are tricky.

James Neal deal has Troy Brouwer 2.0 written all over it. Though, I must give Treliving credit for acquiring both Lindholm and Hanifan and both players fit in with the organization perfectly and he also was able to lock them up long term at a bargain deal.

Watched Utica for the first time last night. Strange game from Springfield. Dahlen looked great, McEneny was impressive and I thought Jasek and even Palmu looked great !

Re an earlier comment on Erik Karlsson's draft expectations ( did Ottawa 'reach' to pick him ? ), here's the 'MyDraft' rankings from 2008 http://www.mynhldraft.com/2008-NHL-Mock-Draft/

I read the Mock Draft, wow a lot of busts that year were ranked very high.

I know everybody is hot for QH, but I hope he plays two more years in the NCAA before signing. It will allow him to grow and get bigger and stronger. That NCAA seasoning certainly didn't hurt Brock. That would also allow the team to protect another D.

Two more years after this year would mean Hughes has played 4 full seasons in the NCAA. On August 15th 2021, he is an UFA and can sign anywhere he wants to. The advantage of owning a NCAA player’s rights is to sign him before his 4th year, give him a contract and signing bonuses a year or two earlier to sweeten the deal so he will sign with your team.

It was rumoured that Hughes already couldn’t wait to turn pro this season, if we choose not to sign him until 2 years later, you risk angering your premium prospect and he could go anywhere he wants. For example, he could just bolt and sign on the same team that his brother Jack Hughes gets drafted to and we will be screwed.

I will say just sign him at the end of the year and make sure he is our guy. It would mean we have to use a protection slot on him in the Seattle Expansion but it also reflects that as an organization, we recognize Hughes as a big part of our future.

What was with all the hype for Mittelstadt last year?  Hughes is in his D+1 like Mittelstadt was, is a defenseman, and has a higher in ppg...

The 2017 draft at the time was seen as a relatively weak draft with average players and not a lot of elite talent. Mittlestadt at the time was consider one of the more promising players who could become a 1st line center. He also had a good WJC (I personally am not too hype up or get too down with players performance at WJC). In recent years, players with a good WJC gets hyped by the media a lot. Not a lot of media coverage on junior games or NCAA games, and if a player have a good WJC, they get a lot of vibe. Remember the hype around Hogdson and Schroeder after their WJC performances? It is similar to that.

Oh man, I want Hughes here now. That cheeky bank pass to set up to breakaway winner in 3-on-3 OT:

Hughes had 2 assists in the 3-2 win, but only one will count officially as 3-on-3 OT points don’t get credited to season scoring stats (NCAA quirk).

It boggles my mind why the NCAA does this. Why can't OT points count on official score-sheet as well? I can't think of any other leagues at any level or international games does this.

  10. I love the way Jake plays even when he isn't scoring he is using his speed to create chances and hitting opponents. He is coming along fine. I believe him to be a consistent 20 goal scorer for us for the next few years.

    Hopefully management here

    although JB is pretty decent

he needs to pull off a big trade that turns out in our favor to cement himself in our lore- I could see him winning a cup here

At some point of this rebuild, JB needs to find a way to pull off a “Courtnall, Ronning, Momesso etc.” kind of major blockbuster deal to bolster the team. Similar to what the Flames did to bring in Lindholm and Hanifan.

And Noah Dobson just 14 points in 25 games in the QMJHL.  The Islanders were looking pretty good at the time when they got both of them at 9th and 12th overall or whatever it was.

Dobson’s team is just atrocious right now in the QMJHL. He is actually 2nd on his team in scoring. His numbers doesn’t tell the whole story. I see him getting traded to a QMJHL contending team soon.

Jake Wise, who many preferred over Madden, has 2 pts in 10 games for BU.

What’s more surprising to me is Wahlstrom is only at 3G 1A 4 points with 11 GP.

Look forward to hearing your take on our guys at the WJC this year! Big Quinn Hughes fan, the guy is going to change the way the Canucks play perhaps even more so than EP40 and BB6

3 on 3 OTs in the future could end in the first minute if we start with EP, BB and QH.
