  1. Well, it's not like we're worse without Bo right now. You could argue that we have a new coach and Demko back but a captain's job is to bring the team together and keep the direction of the team in a positive manner even when you have a key player out. Whether it's poor leadership or on the team for not taking Bo's direction, it doesn't matter......having Bo as captain wasn't taking us anywhere and probably still wouldn't. There was no way this club kept Bo while changing captains, so the trade was inevitable in all likelihood. You may note that JR / PA stated that most of a team do not have to be high end players. It comes down to how players come together more than anything.....thus the critical pieces are leadership, coaching and "buy-in" from the rest of the team. Bo's a great player and a good person but I suspect JR / PA made a "not-so popular decision" (which they hinted at earlier) in order to change the leadership of the team. I doubt keeping Bo was ever on the cards and that's why they locked up JTM earlier.
  2. Bo was great to have on the team but I never liked him as a captain and we would have gone nowhere for forever more if he would have stayed on with this team. I don't mean that in any disrespectful way. It's a team sport but if you keep the same players and tinker with things you will likely get the same result. Bo is a great $6M/yr player on a team but not $8M/yr and not as your captain. Hopefully he doesn't get booed for his comments. They were strange comments to make for him but given his history here I think we turn a blind eye for now and wish him well.
  3. You may be missing one thing here.....it's possible Schenn wanted a trade to help the Canucks in the off-season while gaining a playoff season in his late career in a city which he is comfortable in. My guess is that this was a mutual plan with PA working with the team of Luke's pick. When GM's do these kinds of things, players do respect the clubs (and may come back). We'll see in a few months time I guess.
  4. OEL - we have to ride it out unless the cap goes up significantly......in which case, a buy out after this year isn't horrible if we're not a contender. Myers - very decent chance someone picks him up after the bonus.....but not worth losing an asset in the process.
  5. 5-6 points out of the playoffs is the sweet spot for the Vancouver Canucks. Bleh! The only thing I like about this is that perhaps they'll take a D-man in the draft. They need a few.
  6. OEL contract is awful.....but a buyout is basically saddling this club for many more years. Have the Canucks had a year in the last decade without having dead cap? I'm not sure. I agree with some here that we just need to live with it and hope that he's healthy and a better contributor for the next few years. Still can't believe we complained about LE's contract for those 5 years only to swap it and a couple of others for a longer-term anchor in cap use. Harder to think that an owner would approve it.
  7. First, I laugh at how we make it past the TDL and we automatically get excited for the draft next (me included). Second, the mock draft looks so real.....of course the Canucks will draft a winger, lol. This is why I was thinking it wouldn't be terrible for the Canucks to drop down in the draft....it may make it more plausible that they draft a defencemen.
  8. Boeser and Garland go this summer. Maybe Myers if a cash-strapped team can step up. Worst case scenario they buy out OEL (which I hate the idea of that contract hanging around so long, but it's a real possibility) I'm less worried about the cap right now than I am seeing this team winning too many meaningless games. This team badly needs high end players on cheap contracts.
  9. Agree on JB. But that doesn't necessarily mean JR & PA will be bang on here. The pickups have been solid so far though, I'd agree. But like I said, we'll see....
  10. We of course can't say the move was great until we see Hronek in action. Seems like many thought picking up Nate Schmidt was a shrewd move.....until he wasn't great for us because for whatever reason he wasn't a good fit. It's a risk we of course take as any other, but there's really no point in judging this trade until a year from now.
  11. We all want Bedard of course. If we get a top 3 pick, that would be fantastic. But if we don't, management may be more inclined to pick the best D in the draft and that may be exactly what we need. Scoring is not the problem for this club. If they get lucky with drafting a D, signing a good D in the off-season and with the addition of Hronek, this club could quickly turn things around defensively.....especially with a healthy Demko. The other key targets for this team is a legitimate shutdown line and that should be more easily achievable than other facets of a team. So with this in mind, you make a good case to defend this trade despite the timing. I just wished our second round pick (nearly a first rounder) wasn't traded. I don't mind trading the NYI pick if Hronek is the RHD that we desperately needed.
  12. Hoping that someone can lift his game is a big red blinking light, is it not? The drive should come from within. Coaching and guiding is one thing, encouraging burning more calories is another
  13. Good luck with moving OEL's salary and having that on the books for longer with a buyout is not too appealing neither. OEL and Bear as a third pair is reasonable other than OEL's salary. Moving Myers after his bonus will no doubt be doable......so we still need 2 top 4 D before we have a chance to move forward.
  14. And that's fair other than a high second round pick was given up as well. The A+ was there to lose after the Horvat trade IMO and Beauvillier is part of that reason.
  15. More value later and possibly a higher likelihood that we draft higher with our own pick.......that is if Hronek moves the needle for this team.
  16. I totally agree. The one caveat I suppose is that a stay at home shutdown defenceman can usually be picked up more easily.
  17. Would you trade Hronek for Dobson and Romanov? I understand what you're saying....better to have a known entity than a draft guess. 25 is not old, but I would have felt better if they traded for a solid 22 year old that was tracking well.
  18. This is terrible. Yesterday I was cheering the fact that the day had finally arrived where we start a proper rebuild. Well, it was enjoyable while it lasted. Fair or unfair, we just traded away a first and a high second round pick. We traded away potentially 2 players that would have played at lower contracts for years to come.......possibly 2 higher-end players. If we were a playoff team already, I wouldn't have minded this. But we're not. Let's not forget that if Hronek plays well (and with Demko playing well), we also drop in the draft order. A trade like this in 3 years would have made good sense to me. Not this year though. UGH!
  19. I have to say, this has been the most entertaining part of the season. For once management (and FA) have listened to the fans and we're starting to strip it down. If Demko goes, I have to think that Miller and Brock will be going too.
  20. Oh I agree, but let's be honest......a Canucks GM would have given up a 2nd for him.
  21. Ugh, I thought we'd get a second for him. I hope he does come back. No guarantee. What a quality guy. Hard to cheer for the leafs but I'll cheer for him.
