I’d say Demko’s value is similar to what Freddie Anderson was when the leafs acquired him in 2016. A late first round pick (ended up being 30th overall since the pick was originally held by pitsburg who won the cup) and a 2nd in the next year. since Demko is a little bit less proven, maybe a 3rd And a (late) 1st would be his value. based on that value, and the fact the Detroit desperately needs a goaltender to add to their core, I think Demko is fair enough compensation for taking on half of Eriksson’s salary and one year of Cogliano

I am pretty firmly of the opinion that there are very few, if any, scenarios where the Canucks are “Better off letting Markstrom walk”. 0 guarantees that Demko ever develops into the type of goalie Markstrom currently is. I think Lind has some value as a cost controlled top 9 player in a couple season’s, but I think there is more value in using him to shed cap today. Canucks need space next season and this might get it done. Doubt marky commands that much in a flat cap world, but even if he does then dropping Eriksson is the only way to get it done. Marky just earned mvp this past season. The Canucks are a far worse team without him I admit they are rare; the duchene one is the only one that immediately jumps to mind. Massive three way trade to rid us of Eriksson once and for all. to happen in this coming offseason. Assumes we re-sign Markstrom Canucks Send Louis Eriksson and Thatcher Demko (who will need to be exposed in Expansion draft if we keep him) to Detroit for Pickard (750k, 1 season left) Canucks also send Kole Lind (also expansion draft risk for Canucks) to Dallas for Blake Comeau (1 yr left at 2.4 million) and a 5th round pick. Detroit sends Louis Eriksson @ 50% salary retention (3 mill for two seasons) for Andrew Cogliano (3.25 million for 1 season) Outcome: Vancouver sheds Eriksson’s 6 million for the next two years, give up Demko and Lind. Gain Pickard and a 5th. Take on Comeau’s 2.4 million Detroit takes on 6.25 million in cap this year, 3 million next year, add cogliano and Demko. Lose Pickard DAL sheds 2.65 million in salary this year, adds 3 million next year, take on Eriksson, give up a 5th, gain Lind. I’m quite confident Louis would waive to go to Dallas. Comeau has no trade restrictions, Cogliano has a 6 team no trade list. If Cogliano refuses to to go to Detroit, then have Detroit retain 850k on him and send him to VAN in exchange for Comeau. Cap stays the same, just Cogliano and Comeau are on different teams than in the scenerio I suggested.

Don’t attach a first. Attach Demko. lots of teams who have cap space are looking for a goalie. Ottawa Detroit Buffalo Colorado LA Demko is going to be lost to the Expansion draft anyways. Might as well send him early and strap Eriksson to him on the way out

If rathbone has a solid rookie season this year and shows he can be an NHL Top 4 Defenseman, the Canucks could end up having 2 of their top 4 D (Rathbone and Hughes) exempt from the Expansion Draft. Opens them up the opportunity to acquire on for cheap next TDL from teams that have too many to protect and are worried about losing one for free teams like Nashville, Tampa, Carolina, Minnesota, etc. Are all going to have to leave a Top 4 D exposed in the Expansion Draft. Maybe Jim Benning will come in and scoop one for cheap if he’s smart ...all of this assuming Rathbone is the real deal, of course

If u trade Boeser for a D-man, you could let Tanev walk and sign Toffoli. If you let Toffoli walk, you could keep Boeser and re-sign Tanev. So which is better? Boeser + Tanev or Toffoli + New defenseman? i guess really it depends on the defenseman you’re getting back at the end of the day

The problem is, when you’re trying to trade away guys like Sutter, you have to find a trade partner that has some kind of a need for the player and you have to be willing to do that team a favour. Otherwise, the Canucks will end up attaching decent picks or prospects to Sutter to cap dump him to some team. Not worth losing a 2nd or Lind or something if you could instead just swap him for a D-man

I will attempt to explain the Tanev aspect a little bit more for this trade. if the Canucks sign Markstrom, Toffoli, virtanen, and Gaudette, they will be way over the cap and can’t afford to sign Tanev nor Stetcher. Essentially they would have to trade some of their excess forwards to make up cap space to sign a defender. The only way to trade players like Sutter or Roussel or Baertschi or Eriksson is either to take salary back or include a sweetener. by trading Sutter for Russell, the Canucks can ice a full line up with baertschi and Eriksson buried in the minors, the Canucks would be less than a million over the cap. This means they only have to make one other cap dump to stay under the cap. tl;dr the Canucks simply can’t afford to keep Tanev. This trade finds a way to replace him and stay cap compliant

Brandon Sutter for Kris Russell 1 for 1. No salary retention, no picks, no conditions. Edmonton need a 3rd line C, preferably some one with experience and some leadership skills who can play hard minutes (they had Markus Grandlund in this role for much of last season, for reference). Sutter obviously fits this bill quite nicely, but his cap hit is definitely a deal breaker... or is it? Kris Russell (1 year left at $4 mill per) bring a lot of similar “intangibles” to table that Sutter does. High character, gritty, Team guy, blah blah blah. Most importantly, he plays LD and RD. if Canucks have to let Tanev walk, they can replace him in the line up with Russell. Tanev and Sutter = $8.825 million out. Russell = $4 million in. Total cap savings is $4.825 million and the Canucks can still easily ice a full line up with plenty of spares. “But wait!” You say, “Tanev is way better than Russell, doesn’t this make us worse?” thus is a good point. Russell does a lot of things that Tanev does (block shots, shutdown D, tough minutes, low scoring, etc.) but his skating and breakout passing are definitely a step below Tanev at this point in their careers. However, this is the sacrifice required to shed cap without giving up any futures like picks, prospects, or good young players. Hopefully rafferty/Myers/joulevi etc. Can pick up the lid left behind by Tanev

Marky is probably the most important player, and is imo a top 10 goalie in the league. However, I would say that petey, hughes, and Miller were all better players this season. Again, I’m ignoring a players importance and simply looking at who is the best player. I think it’s hard to argue the pettersson, who arguably played like a top 10 player in the NHL this season, isn’t the best

Was thinking about who the best player was this season and ended up going through every player and ranking them. my list isnt necessarily based off of who is most important, but more about who is the best player and brings the most to them game, ie tanev might be more important than Pearson, but Pearson was the better player this season. I’m also ignoring things like games played, so players like toffoli, macewan, leivo, etc. Aren’t penalized for not playing all games. I also ignored call up players like graovac, Bailey, goldobin, beartschi, Sautner, dipietro, etc. because it’s hard to compare them to the line up regulars. MacEwan is the only exception because he stuck with the team after his most recent call up. okay... 1. Pettersson 2. JT Miller 3. Hughes 4. Marky 5. Horvat 6. Boeser 7. Toffoli 8. Edler 9. If they are deciding to run a top pair of Reilly - Muzzin then they should be fine. However, if they are planning to have Muzzin play on the 2nd pair then they are still missing a top 2 right side Defenseman. on top of that, reilly expires at the end of next season. They will be right back in this same situation next TDL

That’s uh, quite steep. Just turned 31, average offensively, skating already slowing down. I get he a good defenseman but that’s a lot of money per year for a LHD when you have no RH options

Revisiting this... it’s was only about 13 months ago that people were on the fence if Jacob markstrom is even a #1 goalie. Maybe the 6 million dollar price tag i see people floating around for his new contract is a bit too high for a guy who has been really good for only a season and a half.

THE WORST ONE HES EVER MADE! just hilarious to think about how wrong people were about this trade when it happened

As far as I’m aware, Rafferty was never pegged as an offensive d-man. He’s viewed more as a all-round 2-way sort of guy. Unfortunately, due to AHLtv’s stupid prices and the lack of meaningful statistics, we can only really go off things like his points per game for comparison to other players. Eye test and fancy stats aren’t really available I wonder how he is doing as a two-way guy. I did notice in the highlight package from the game last night that he blew the zone to try and create an odd man rush which resulted in a 2 on 0 the other way for one of the Tigers goals

I like that a lot. I was thinking bracco and a pick (3rd round maybe?) but if Toronto is willing to part with Kapanen Canucks should be all over that. Maybe send motte back as well to even out the cap
