  1. They can if the Canucks take back Manning as outlined in the OP
  2. To Edmonton: Sutter To Vancouver: Manning 2nd round pick I’ve seen a lot of mock line-ups for the oilers that have Grandlund as their 3rd line centre and European Free agent signing as their 4th line centre. Adding a 3rd line centre is a major need for that team right now, but cap space is limited. Manning seems destined to start the season in the AHL unless NONE of their prospects are deemed ready to go (unlikely IMO as they have Bouchard, bear, Jones, legassen, and persson who imo are all better than manning). I think they’d be willing to pay to get rid of him to open the cap to bring in a reliable 3rd line centre. Canucks get a 2nd round pick with taking manning back, but still end up clearing just over 2 million in cap. Then if the Canucks send LE, Schaller, and manning to Utica, they will have enough cap space to sign boeser (7.5 aav) and Goldobin (1.5 aav).
  3. In that forward group, only Pettersson, Baertschi, sutter, Leivo, and Motte are under 200 pounds. Only pettersson is below 190. On defense, Stetcher and Hughes are both sub 200, but everyone else is about 200 or more (tanev 197 and Benn 199). Heavy lineup. And those who aren’t heavy are highly skilled to make up for it
  4. I think this is just baseless speculation. But I think a real deal is here to be found. If Edmonton retains 250 k on Lucic, the cap hits cancel out. If Calgary can get Lucic to agree to waive his NMC for the expansion draft, then I think I swap is possible. Then instead of Russell, they attach puljujarvi. CGY still sends frolik. I think that’s the most fair trade where both sides benefit
  5. Genuinely interested how many of the Lucic supporters in this thread actually watched the oilers the last three seasons. Living in Edmonton the past three years, I watched the team a lot and started following them closely. Working at Rogers place selling beer in the stands, I got a first hand look at the team night after night from ice level. If I’m being honest, it blows my mind that anyone thinks lucic has any value at all. His shot is gone, hands of wood, poor decision making in the offensive zone, bad positioning in the defensive zone, and worst of all, slowest foot speed in the league. His hits are so high because he finishes his checks late on the forecheck every time. Due to his lack of speed, he’s 1 or 2 strides behind where he should be when he skates from the blue line to behind the redline. That fraction extra of a second that it takes to get in on the forecheck gives the defender enough time to make the play. Then when lucic throws a hit, the play is already moving up the ice behind him and he’s tangle up in the corner unable to get back in the play. His hit numbers are an indicator of being taken out of the play, not getting into it. As for offence, it’s pretty much non existent. His 5 on 5 play has been awful in all three years with the oilers, even his first year when he put up 50 points (half we’re on the pp), it was clear that he couldn’t keep up with the play. That’s why maroon ended up being on the top line instead of him. Instead Lucic anchored Ryan Nugent Hopkins left wing and RNH had one of the least productive seasons of his career. Since that season, his offence has only gotten worse. He doesn’t even put up points on the PP any more. Bad passes, weak shots, and too slow to get into position. Black hole for any type of protection. any notion of a 2-way game is laughable. Stick on his hip as he glides through the D-zone behind the play = great defense, right? No wonder he gets no PK time. All round bad player who generates nothing
  6. Been thinking this for a long while as a good option.
  7. Still very early but I’d say this is probably JB’s best off season with the Canucks. Maybe the first offseason was similar with signing Vrbata and Miller, but this one is I think is better
  8. Looking at comparables, I would not be surprised if trouba comes in at 7 million
  9. Would rather do tanev @ 50% retained for just a 2nd and a 3rd or something. Maybe take kulikov back and get a 1st from them
  10. Canucks are definitely in the path to cap hell, but they can avoid it if they are smart. If they can cut Eriksson, all the bad money will be gone in the next 2 seasons (save for Myers and beagle, but I think both will still be contributors). From there, canucks have to be very prudent. I look at contracts like kapenan, kerfoot, and Johnson in the leafs, or Acari and Heinon in Boston, or even Virtanen and Leivo here. Those are the types of contracts to fill out your roster once the core is in place. Winnipeg has perrault and little and kulak taking up millions that could be replaced with young players on bridge contracts. That’s what the canucks have to avoid when Pettersson and Hughes come off their ELC’s in 2 years
  11. I’ll happily eat crow when the jets inevitably prove me wrong and win a cup this year, but right now I believe that their window has passed. Cap problems have caught up to them. Ehlers, Laine, and Connor are all going to be signed to massive contracts. On top of that, Wheelers 5 year 8.25 mill AAv contract kicks in this season. Wheeler is a really good hockey player but that’s a lot of money to be paying a guy till he’s 37. On top of that, middle 6 centre Brian little is collecting over 5 mill for another 5 years. Jets have a roster of 15 and 22 million in cap space. To get to a roster size of 23, that’s an average of 2.75 million per player. Pretend laine and Connor come in at 15 mill combined (probably low balling it) that means they have 7 million to sign 6 players. Gunna be a lot of league minimum contracts to fill out the roster. The defense was decimated this off season, with Trouba, Myers, and Chariot all leaving. They still have big buff for two more years but at 34 and with the injury troubles he’s had, he’s slipping from the reliable #1 D-man he once was. Pionk, niku, etc are nice complimentary pieces right now, but basically josh morrisey will be the one carrying this D-core pretty soon. They may try and sign Jake Gardiner, but they’re cap space is so limited that this will be a challenge. While they do have some solid prospects, their overall prospect pool is pretty middling. Likely the only ELC player they have who can be an impact player next year is Vesalinen. With the departure of Tanev from their bottom 6, the jets will have a hard time filling out depth roles without competent ELC players (aka gaudette type players). Obviously, the jets still have some great pieces. Scheifle is a legit #1 centre on a great contract. Hellybuck is a young, solid goalie. And the three young wingers mentioned earlier (ehlers, Connor, laine) will be top 6 scorers their whole careers. But the reality is the Jets are a worse team now than last season with worse cap problems. It will be difficult for the GM to get it back to where it once was.
  12. I will try and keep it brief and vague (increase my odds of getting some right ). Playoffs, it’s happening bo brock and Pete all hit 30 Gs top 10 pk top 15 pp petey wins team MVP edler wins best D-man Sutter is traded before the draft Canes win the cup
  13. Worried about a potential nmc added in there but in the surface I think it’s a deal that can work very well. Certainly good for the next 2 years. If it can be moved in year 4 or 5 at tdl then even better
  14. I’d try and find a way to send the Oilers Sutter and get puljujarvi back. Idk how you can make t work cap wise but that’s be the deal I’d try and make. I’ve heard rumours the oilers are looking for RH 3rd line C. Edit: some evidence for my proposal
  15. Barrie, Ghost, Risto... honestly doesn’t matter which one I would just love to get one of them. I’d even take a shattenkirk or a stralman or a miller. Just SOMEONE to make our D-core better. That’s all I ask!
  16. This is a no brainer in my opinion. He’s an excellent fit with the Canucks
  17. To winnipeg Chris Tanev 50% retained sven baertschi to Van Ehlers anythjng more than this and it’s not worth it imo
  18. Yeah that’s exactly the way I see it. NYR saves a million per year to put towards Trouba and as bad as he is I’m sure Eriksson can crack their bottom 6. Maybe Canucks add a sweetener too, like a Goldobin or something?
  19. With the Rags Aquiring Trouba, shattenkirk could defs be on the outs. Maybe can’t do an Eriksson swap but I’m sure he could be had for cheap
  20. Yes! I’m very much in favour of bringing in Tim heed and maybe a defensive defensemen on the right side as well. Could see big changes to the Canucks d-core. Some other moves they could make: 1) if Edler walks (likely) sign Gardiner. Good pp guy, good first pass, and his shortcomings are overrated due to game 7 magnifications last few years. 2) trade Brandon Sutter to Edmonton for Kris Russel. Pretty even trade I would say. Defensive specialist players who are overpaid for their role, similar contracts. Each team filling a position of need. 3)see if you can flip Tanev (50% retained) for a pick or forward or something. If no good offer keep him on the team until he inevitably gets injured. 4) if there is a real gap in signing Ben Hutton, Pursue Jordie Ben with a 3 year deal. Brings a lot of different tools to the table that Te Canucks don’t have. Potential New top 6 D-core Gardiner - Stetcher Hughes - Russel Benn - Heed right side still need a lot of work but imo it’s a one step at a time process. All the other parts are in place and it’s a lot better than the d group from this year, and should be pretty easy to put together
